This is a very good question. I used to tip whether the service was good or not just to avoid the confrontation or the embarrassment of the person thinking I am a cheapskate or something. I used to go and get my hair cut and I would tip them if they cut it good or not. I don't do that any more because I am not getting what I have asked and have paid for. They do not even ask you in detail what you like or anything. I have explained in full to them and they say they understand and then I end up getting a hair cut that I never even said I wanted. It gets very frustrating. I will tip someone if I know they truly tried to do their best to please me. If they act like they don't care about the service they gave me, then I don't care to tip them for their bad service either.

Nope. I dont tip anymore when the service sucks. For me, tip is a voluntary act of the customer because they were satisfied with the service so I don't oblige myself to give tips if I was not happy. When there's already a service charge, normally I don't give tips anymore since my pocket will be empty if I still do. But, if the service was superb and I was very very satisfied, and sometimes this happens to me, I don't mind shelling out a couple more bucks to reward the people who gave me service deluxe

When the service is not so good, then I don't give so much tips, because the waitor doesn't deserve it. But I do tip, because I know how it's like being a waitor. It's a hard work, and the payment is not that good. You get more money from tips, and that's why waitors need to work hard for it.

Tips are not necessary. If the service is not good then I don't give tips unless if I am happy and satisfied with their service.

I never go into a restaurant assumeing I'm going to tip. They have to earn a tip in my eyes. If they do good work and are pleasant then they get 10% and if they don't get the food right and are rude they get nothing.

Just a note that if the food's not right, it's not always the server's fault, depending on what's wrong with it. If it's something glaringly obvious that they could've caught, like bringing you french fries when you wanted onion rings, then that's their fault. But if it's something like your steak is too rare or there's a seasoning on your food that you didn't want, then you might want to cut them some slack and consider how noticable the mistake could have been to a server who's grabbing a tray full of plates to take to a table as quickly as possible.

Here in the UK it's not compulsory to tip when dining out. I have no problem tipping in restaurants when I have received good service and tend to leave between 10-15% as a tip. If I have received poor service I make a point of not tipping and when a service charge is included in the bill I tend to not bother to leave a tip unless the service has been exceptional. I know several people who have worked in Indian restaurants and they've said generally the management take the tips even if they are handed directly to the staff and therefore don't tip unless you want it to go straight into the management's pockets! This is a shame as I often eat at Indian restaurants and I've watched carefully when other people have left tips and lo and behold I've seen the manager put out their hand for the cash tip when the waiter has returned with the credit card bill! In general tip if you feel you should - if the service levels have been good enough for you to want to return and the waiting staff made your dining experience pleasurable. I personally don't take any notice of people who say waiting staff are on minimum wage and are often struggling students, et, so we should tip them! We all had to start somewhere - when I was in my first job, I worked in an office and got paid a very very low wage. I didn't get tips for providing good customer service, I did it because I wanted to earn a good reputation and because I am genuinely happy to treat my customers well.

I just wanted to clarify something I said above in case people misunderstand - when I said Indian restaurants' management tend to keep the tips their staff at given - I'm talking about restaurants in the UK and more specifically in London. I don't know about Indian restaurants outside of London and the South East of the UK and I honestly don't know how it works in other countries...

If there is a service/tip charge already on the bill then no we do not leave a tip. We don't have a habit of attending those kinds of restaurants. There are many other kinds where there is truth in tipping. We try to make it a good 20 per cent of our total bill. At times we are fortunate to just go out to eat and the tip can be hard to come by. We do try our best to leave all we can up to 20 percent. Good luck with this in the future.

No, I wouldn't. I once worked in food industry, so I know what kind of service is to expected from crews. Not to be mean or anything, but its part of the job of the crews to give good service, and if the service was below standard, then they don't deserve a reward. Because that's what a tip is: a reward.

i don't give a tip if i am not satisfied with the service, and if i notice that there is a service charge already. however, if the service was really good, then i take it as an exception, i normally leave a small tip, if this is the case.

well the barears are paid for the job. giving or not giving a tip to the service you got is upto ones interest. but i dont and never considering that hes doing his job and theres that value added tax to what you are please with.

I'll still tip if there's a service charge because I have no way of knowing if that service charge or any portion of it actually goes to the server. If the service sucks, it just depends on how sucky it is. I might leave a really small tip. It would have to be really horrible service for me to leave no tip at all.
