Do School Canteens Serve HEALTHY Food?

What is your Child's School Canteen Like?
Most of us are very concerned about our Children's health, and what is available for them to buy at the school canteen. After all, what they eat at lunch time is going to affect their ability to concentrate and perform for the rest of the day, let alone their long term general health.
My daughers canteen in primary swapped over to a healthy food diet. It was good, as instead of packets of potato chips, there were homemade pita bread chips. There was garlic bread and herb bread. A salad was always available, and oven heated potato chips.
Now she is in high school and the canteen is now where near as good. Packets of chips and cream buns abound. None of the rolls are wholemeal.

There's been a lot of publicity surrounding this in Britain in recent years as one of our TV chefs Jamie Oliver did a TV show about it.
School dinners were originally started in this country so poor children would get at least one good meal a day. Todays children can choose between junk and good food which isn't a good thing in my opinion, as kids will always choose the chips.
Children need to learn to make healthy choices now so they remain healthy in their adult lives, and tempting them with unhealthy choices isn't fair. Perhaps schools could only serve junk food on one day of the week, so it's a treat for the kids as it should be.

Your home prepared lunches are probably a lot better than canteen ones.

This was a discussion of mine a few weeks ago and you can check out some of the responses to it.... http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/674735.aspx
Healthier food is indeed in our kids best interest and as parents we should nag the schools to improve them. Also at your kids age and having had learned to eat better she would have a good voice to ask the canteen for better food. Also if kids would not buy the junk them eventually they would not serve it. Good luck. I will see how people respond to your discussion too!

School canteens are giving good food and children like it very much, but children are growing faster they require more healthy and nutritious food like sprouted food, green salads, cottage chease, potato, juices of seasonal fruits and it should be containing hurbs which are protective against desease. So school canteen should servethis kind of food.

Many of the school canteens do not serve healthy food, they just serve fast food like chips, hamburger, soft drinks which is not healthy for the children.
In order to make sure the children can grow up healthily, those food should be banned, otherwise ,when they grow up, the ymay have high chance of having diabetes,etc..

I am afraid that here in india , the parents really have to search hard for this , because the people employed in the canteens do not really care about the children and thats a sad part, even in bigger institutions there are chances of a spoiled canteen and the risk to health are enormous.

i do not like school or college canteen where they provide breakfast or meal to childrens and adults. when i was in college, i saw that they do not use fresh refine for cooking. even their dinning table, utensils are not cleaned and they do not pay much attention towards their deliberately. so this is not hygenic to go canteen for food. this is same happening in school canteen where canteen owner does not provide fresh food to children. they charge much price for their food. my opinion is it should be ban from school as well as college with immedidate effect.

Well,I don't think my kids schools serve healthy food always...For my child in kinder they are served with healthy food like soup, champorado, bread, juice...for my grade school and high school they get to buy junk foods aside from the hotdogs and bread and the fruit shakes, and yakult...I am not very aware what else but I believe that my kids are ok with that because at home we have healthy foods..I allow my kids to eat those junk foods but at a limit just for them to taste how it is to be a child...I don't stop them from eating those kinds of food but I properly guide them...Like when their teeth hurts from eating too much candy or chocolates I tell them what caused it and tell them not to eat it anymore..Sometimes when they get a tummy ache I tell them to eat bread instead of chips...rice instead of sweets...They're good kids and I just want them to feel what it is to be a child.

My adopted baby is still in pre school. I could say that some foods aren't healthy as they do sell junk foods and softdrinks. But the teachers told us that no matter how they avoid it , children would surely go out and buy some of it. Rather than risking their life for some automobile accident. They rather choosed that way to sell some junkfoods and they have healthy foods as well.

I work in an elementary school and our lunches are healthy food. We have no chips or candies. On special days they may have a slice of cake or a cookie, but usually they have salad everyday and vegetables everyday. All the bread used on sandwiches or rolls are whole wheat. We have chicken but instead of being fried it is baked, but looks like fried chicken. In high school it is different because they can choose all types of things. They also have access to vending machines full of junk. I think they really need to change that because it's not healthy.

My daughter's school runs a very hygenic canteen. Freshly cooked food is served daily and a fixed menu is also there. But since we r from India, the menu is also south indian one.... But still my daughtr carries her own lunch.

Elementary and middle level schools should always strive for healthy food to serve the children, but by the time kids reach high school they know what the tasty stuff is. Unless it is a strict school, it's hard to restrict high schoolers from digging into grease, with the health of being young it doesn't appear as much of an issue to teens. High schools should encourage healthy eating and offer as many healthy options as possible, but ultimately the children will eat what they want to.

In my daughters school we are told what they are allowed in their lunchboxes and they aren't allowed sweets or chocolate, but school dinners give them desserts such as chocolate cake with custard on. It annoys me that they still have sugary, fatty puddings on the menu.

My daughters school has changed what food is available to the kids. They have healthy option instead of the usual stuff they feed to kids. Salads are readily available, as are Grab Bags. These usually include a sandwich, a carton of fresh juice and an apple or a pear.
I know my daughter has the Grab Bags a lot. She loves them, and I can rest easy knowing that she's getting a healthy and satisfying lunch.
