Interesting! Are you sure it's catching more bugs than AVG would? I don't know how anyone could know for sure without an actual "side by side" comparison.

Hi tigerdragon. I am using Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Free Edition. It's very light on resources and really gives me satisfaction. If you want some feedbacks, you can visit www.av-comparatives.org. If it's already expired, you can uninstall and reinstall it in their official website. Then, it's free again. Your software will be useless if it's out-of-date, so you need to update this even once in a week or you can prefer to update it regularly if you want.
If you're still unsatisfied, you can try another that would really fit your machine.
Regards,

AVG is charging now? How did that happen? I never got charged and I even updated my software. I know there is a version you can pay for. Maybe they just haven't notified me, yet.

AVG still has their free version because I have it installed on my computer, on their website you need to go to Products and then choose Free AVG Anti-virus. It works good especially if you don't have any anti-virus. I had Norton, but it is a resource hog, takes forever to scan and it takes up so much memory. I prefer AVG because it doesn't use too much memory and I don't have to pay anything.

You can get a paid version of AVG but you can still get the free version, I knw because someone was asking about virus protection and I did a search for the free download as I use it and I found the link and download button yesterday. It seems to be ok and picks stuff up.

hai tiger,
i am using norton free version i found it very useful moreover it is the only free versined anti virus which can block trojans backdoor worms all that.my advice is if u dont use all those x and harmful sites then avg is good enogh it can detect small viruses but if u r using those sites then norton is the option

Like what callarse1 pointed out, AVG still has a free version - and it is one that I am currently using - very well. :P
It was version 7.1 earlier but recently a big gigantic popup appeared. The language they used was confusing and after my first scan through, I got the same impression as you that it is now charging.
What they are saying instead is that they ver 7.1 has undergone a complete haul and the new ver 7.5 has to be downloaded and installed from scratch.
This is the exact link pointing to the download for ver 7.5. http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg75free_446a965.exe
Hope this helps. ;-)

I always try to have an antivirus protection program on my computer. Most of the time I actually have a couple different ones that scan at different times. I would rather be safe than sorry, and computer viruses aren't a joke. Whoever sits at home and creates them is ridiculous. http://www.limophl.com/
