Have you ever TRULY sat down and counted your blessings?

Many of us get so caught up in the issues of today and the every day drama of life that we forget to honestly step back and take a look at what we have. I would venture to guess that if you're reading these discussions on MyLot you have a lot more then some people in that you have a home, a computer, obviously internet access, food in your pantry and full tummy. On top of that many of us have a wonderful family, health that at least allows us to be somewhat active and alive, an internal happiness that makes us feel complete and safe, money (even if it isn't ever enough), extras like tv's and dvd players and such. We truly are lucky. I just wanted to take a moment and remind us all to say THANKS to our creator for the things in life we DO have instead of feeling bad about the things we DON'T have. Our life is so much better then millions of people out there.

I know that counting my blessings is something that I need to do more often. I really am blessed to have a great family (no matter how hard my mother can be to live with at times, I love her and my father dearly) and a roof over my head, and good food to eat, and a family who loves me. And electricity and a computer and the internet, lol! I don't know how I could stand my life without the internet, especially being so painfully shy everywhere except for online, where I can be much more 'myself'. Really, the only things that I tend to get frustrated about are not being able to find love (which is what I want more than anything, but being so shy makes it difficult) and being lonely sometimes, but I feel that I could progress in both those areas if I could just conquer my shyness, so it all kind of stems from that, things that I know need to be changed within myself. And I do try to remember how lucky I am, how many people are so much worse off, and how much I *should* be thankful for the life that I have. Thank you for reminding me again! ^_^

You do have so much to be thankful for from what I read. And you're great at defeating your shyness here online.. it's only a matter of time until you build up the gumption to take it elsewhere too! (((HUGS)))

As much as I love my crime tv shows, Grey's Anatomy, etc. my husband likes to watch medical dramas - so, guess what? That's what we watch while I tape "my shows". Every time we watch one that involves children, usually with birth defects, I really do thank God for the wonderfull blessing of my two healthy children. I almost lost my daughter when she was 7 months old and I am ashamed to admit, I think I have forgotten to thank God for her everyday like I promised Him I would if she was ok. Thank you for reminding me, and others, that we are very blessed in our lives, despite the hardships we may face - "IF GOD BRINGS US TO IT, HE WILL SEE US THROUGH IT"!

Exactly. Even the worse moments of our life we seem to survive and come out with a new outlook on life.

I hear ya my friend. You read some of the discussions and wonder if they really know how fortunate they are for many other reasons. So many in this world are so worse off. What if we didn't have a warm home to come to at night or a bed to rest our weary bodies on at night. Many live in shelters or on the streets. What if we had to visit the local soup kitchen to get a hot meal and what if the soup kitchen were closed? Thankfully we are blessed. Huggers to you.

Exactly. For every one of us there is someone out there that is much worse off. I always try to remind myself of that.

Great discussion, gal...You are so right about counting our blessings. There are times when I start to feel sorry for myself and then God reminds me from whence I came; things that had happened to me in life that weren't so good. He brought me through so much and is continuing to bless my friends and family...Thank you for starting this topic.

Don't feel guilty about the "feeling sorry for yourself" stuff. We all do it. I've sat and contemplated "Why" so many times but thankfully have stopped and realized that the answer is because maybe it has made me such a strong person and slowed me down enough to appreciate what I have. I was having a "moment" when I started the discussion... one of those ones where you are brought to tears in your eyes because you realize how lucky you really are. So I felt it my duty to remind others to stop and realize how lucky they are too. So you're most welcome.

I, for one, do not stop and count my blessings quite as often as I should, and for that reason I was lead to read your post...that's my belief anyway. On the other hand, I do think alot about those who don't have what I have...especially during the winter months. When it's cold outside I wonder how many people are sleeping on the cold ground somewhere. I always like to remind my kids when they complain that they don't like what I fixed for dinner, that it's more than others have. I know it doesn't phase them at this point, but someday it will and they'll remember me telling them so. Thanks for making us remember.

I'm glad you realize your blessings. I think most of us have moments when we take them for granted. You are human and not perfect, just like the rest of us. That was my intention.. to remind us all of how lucky we really are. I sometimes get caught up in it all myself and have to take a moment to step back and look at the whole picture.

I am one of those people that really counts my blessings. There are even days that i write them down. I keep a journal for those times when i feel the need to write my thoughts and feelings. I don't get to write on my journal everyday but whenever i feel extreme emotions then i have to write. There was a time that i write down at least ten things that i am greatful for the everyday and it made me realize how really blessed i am. For me, one secret of my being happy is learning how to count my blessings.

you truely know how to start good topics. i learned a long time ago to count my blessing. and i never count material things as blessing they are extras. God, family, love, and the fact that God allows me to live and have the above are all a blessing. all the prayers he has answered and some he didnt are all blessing one way or another.

I know what you mean. Living in a very lean situation right now, I know even more what I apppreciate and am thankful for. I thank the LORD everyday for my friends, family, food, house, whatever we have for income on that day, etc. etc. Love my kids, husband, animals. Appreciate that I have a roof over my head (even in the condition it's in). Thankful for the heat away from the snow and ice. Thankful for the clothes on my back. Thankful for the luxury of appliances and technology that I may not need but that does help me some financially and that I enjoy as a hobby. Thankful for Canada which, even as a dual citizen, I would choose as the very best place to live in the world (even if it does get to be -40F outside sometimes which I hate).

I truly appreciate this discussion. Its true that we have so much more than millions of people in the world and yet most of us are dissatisfied. We should all take out a few minutes in the day to thank God for all he has given us and to be grateful rather than always keep asking for more. I thank you coz you discussion is forcing me to think about what ive been given and to appreciate that.

Every single day. With a Marine husband who recently returned from a deployment, I feel SO blessed that he came home alive unlike many others who do not make it. With his job, I can't take anything for granted. So much is at stake. I feel so blessed though that inspite of everything, we're able to stay together, have a wonderful family, etc.

Exactly. For every complaint we have about our life there is a person out there that can't even say they have a home or food in their belly or a warm place to sleep.

well this is a real good question first of all and to say the least , there is a great need to sometimes sit down and thank the almighty for all that he gave me , because every breath you take is also a blessing , so counting them would be like too small a thing because you cannot count them , when i see people with disabilities , i thank god everytime that he gave me eyes to see , and hands to eat and legs to move and i thank him for the food i get and the watera nd my roof over my head , tell me there are people who dont have these things in life so , everything is a blessinga nd i thnak god everyday for all the i have .

Every night before I go to sleep, I always am thankful for my blessings, for everything that God provided for my family. When I feel down, I always remind myself that there are many out there who got it bad that what I am facing as of the moment. That is why every blessing, small or big, I am always thankful.

I don't try to make that a habit of mine because it'll just make me feel satisfied with what I've done when I know I can do better. I don't count my blessings because it feels so mechanical, I give thanks for the blessings I've received though. I'd rather look back in time and see how much/less of a person I've become instead of how much of a successful person I am?!

I often think of it, counting my blessings whenever I feel I great problems in life. Counting our blessings reminds us of the how Great the Love our Creator is giving us.
