I was very lucky to know my Grandmother and Grandfather on my Dad's side. I remember how beautiful my Grandmothers handwriting was. She used such fancy handwriting. She used the old English way of writing. She made her capital letters so distinguished. Still today, I can pick her handwriting out of all the rest. She wrote of her children and who they married in a bible. It is a wonderful site to see her own handwriting. This was not her large family bible. This was a smaller one that she gave me many years before she passed away. I put this bible with my geanology stuff so my kids and grandkids could see how handwriting had changed over time. Do you have a copy of something that your grandparents wrote? Is it unique in some way? Maybe you can add another demention to your family's knowledge of the past. My grandmoters writing brings back wonderful memories to my mind. It is amazing what we put value on in our own personal lives.

I love that old style writing, my elderly neighbour has beautiful writing, I can remember whe I wa at school just as I started to learn to write they brought in italic writing and we were taught that, I think that is a very sad day when they did that, it is nearly as nice as the beautiful old English writing...

Hi, like Darkwing I've done a bit of calligraphy in my time and when I put my mind to it I can write in a lovely way - all inspired by my father who had the most beautiful handwriting and like your Grandmother made the captial letters stand out. Your very fortunate to have this to remind you of your grandmother, I don't have anything that my dad had written! Like Darkwing suggests calligraphy is a great hobby to get into and would readily agree!

What a lovely thing for you to do to pass her on for eternity to your family.
I did not know my grandparents, or anything about my heritage. If I had, I would love to do what you are doing.
I commend you dear.

My mother is the one who had special writing lessons in school. My grandmother only went to third grade. For special occassions and gifts, we always wanted Mom to write. I will have to look around for some samples to preserve. You are right, it is part of our history.

No, I don't have anything my grandparents wrote, and you're very lucky to have been given that. I love fancy writing... I practice calligraphy quite a bit. Maybe that would be a pleasant pastime for you? You can copy the examples or make up your own capital letters and styles.
I have great fun with this, especially in my journal, and I think it makes your handwriting unique.
Brightest Blessings.

I loved my grandmother very much but her handwriting was alot like mine. Illegible. I probably got my handwriting skills from her. I am just glad that I have a computer to use now so I don't have to write. I remember my grandma sending me money in letters and I couldn't read her handwriting. I'm sure when I sent my thanks yous back to her she probably couldn't read mine either. lol.

I sure wish that I could say that I had something with my grandparents handwriting so I can remember them better. I sure do miss them and loved them greatly while they were alive and even still now though they are gone. I have pictures of them which is very nice so I can remember their faces and smiles and the joy they brought me. I remember they had nice handwriting but do not remember what their handwriting looked like.

I have my grandmothers recipes. Those survived the fire in the opposite end of the house and water did not touch them.
Handwriting was once taught in schools and I remember some of those classes. It was once, like manners, a big deal. You worked especially as female on the writing style and technique. Wish it was still that way.

A few years ago for Christmas my grandmother gave all of her 6 children and 4 of her grandchildren one of her journals that she kept over the years. We each had one from a different year. I remember how excited I was to receive one and read it a few times through and even at my age was excited to read the things that she wrote about me! It's funny that you mention handwriting though, because I too could pick her writing out without any problems at all! But, that's because I think she has terrible writing! She writes in cursive, but I always have to squint my eyes and a stare at the words for a long time, or try to read the rest of the sentence to figure things out from context!
That being said, I'm still very blessed to have received one of her journals!

Good for you. You have got quite a number of collections already of things which matter to the family genealogy. I'm afraid I haven't got any. Maybe I have seen my grandparents handwriting, too. But I could not remember clearly anymore. I seem to have read some of the things they have written before and yes, they wrote beautifully because each stroke is paiinstakingly done.

I have many old photos that have belonged to my grandmother. She has written the name of the person on the photo - perhaps thinking of us who would have no idea who that would be. She has an old fashioned handwriting and no wonder, she must have written the names around 1905, maybe before or after. My grandmother was born 1885. My mother was born in 1910 and her handwriting is beautiful too. I have her poetry book where her schoolmates have written small verses and put some printed or drawn pictures beside their poetry.

My uncles handwriting is also very beautiful. He writes in a wonderful way. In our language we used to say " he writing are life pearl drops". He used to write as though it had been taken a print from the printing machine. Its great to see the copy he writes. He also write the letter "a" like the print rather than the letter "a" which we write .

I have lots of things that are in my grandmothers handwriting. Especially my grandma on my dads side. I've been lucky enough to grow up with both of my grandmothers. I lost both grandfathers when I was like 5 or 6 years old but still remember them. My grandma on my dads side used to write me at least 2 or 3 times a month when I was overseas in the Army and I used to love getting her letters. Her handwriting is so different than any I've ever seen. I always thought it was pretty. I have one or two things from my other grandmaother and I'm so glad I kept them because she passed away last year and my other grandma isn't doing very well and I don't think she'll be with us much longer. But you're right and having these things will always be a wonderful personal way to keep them close to me.

3 of my grandparents are still alive so I've seen their handwriting before. I think the most distinguishing thing is how its all in cursive (my moms is like that too). It just looks fancier. I think they used to teach handwriting more in school back then, especually in catholic schools which they all went to.
