I workout 6 days a week. I do cardio and muscle toning (dumbells & crunches) and I have been wondering which one I should focus on more. I am in the process of loosing weight so should I be focusing on cardio?? Or do I need to tighten up my muscles to get rid of flab?? Which one??

Oh yes - you need to do some cardio as well as weights. It's best to do cardio first, THEN weights. Muscles burn more even when at rest - that is why weight training is important. See a trainer at the gym, because if you are using those step/bike trainers, the optimum heart rate you need to reach for fat loss is BELOW the heart rate for cardio work out (faster is not necessarily better). Also, food intake is very very important - don't assume you can eat more just because you're working out. You need to reduce your caloric intake initially, for weight loss.

I had always been told that if you want to burn fat it's best to train at up about 75% of your optimal heart rate and for aerobic conditioning you go higher at 85%. At about 90% it's anaerobic and you start building muscle. Fat is STILL burned as a result of muscle building though. Of course this is just a guide for anyone wanting to start weight loss. Of course the concept is simple - you need to expend more energy than you take in...but having said that, you need to then work out know how much you take in and estimate how much you burn off. I think most people when they start exercising, from doing none at all, tend to overestimate the amount of exercise they do and underestimate their calories in. I can't stand running - I just do a moderate work out or boxing fitness workout and when I feel my clothes getting tighter I just go a few days without eating cakes and bread.

Urbangirl...you and alot of people have a common misconception about fat burning...there is no optimal fat burning heart rate. You see your body is a finely tuned machine...and works on a simple formula. Weight loss= Calories burned Calories consumed. Your body burns calories from 3 different areas, your blood, your liver, and your fat. Fat is the slowest one to burn, but your body uses energy from all 3 locations, its just that your blood and your liver are the first ones to provide your body with the energy it needs...and fat is last because its the most important...because its the most efficient...you can last alot longer off of fat then you can on the energy stored in your blood and liver. So as long as you burn more calories then you consume you will lose weight..there is no way to burn "more" fat then anything else. So yes...faster and longer is better then slower and longer. If you would like me to be more detailed I can be, I just tried to use general terminology so everyone could understand.

If you are in the process of loosing weight you probably shouldn't bother with crunches just yet. Dumb bells are fine if you want to tone up your arms and shoulders but you should concentrate on cardio, and for your mid section pilates. Because if you build up ab muscle now, all it is going to do is push out the fat in the stomach area even more. Doing abs will not give you the definition you want until the fat is gone, and doing abs does not burn the fat...only running and proper diet. If I were you I would focus on cardio (remember there is no substitute for running) and pilates, as well as squats to get your legs and Butt firm. Then I would focus on toning arms/and shoulders with the dumb bells. Abs should be the last thing you do. Hope this helps!

Whats your opinion on the Tae bo workout?? I follow that and it does get up my heart rate and make me sweat. Still not as good as running?

Like I said there is no substitute for running, but Tae Bo is generally a good cardio workout and it does get your heat rate up, which means your body is burning more calories which is the goal. Just make sure that the workout is continuous, so you are constantly burning calories. Even if you work out for 3 hours but take alot of breaks, you might not be burning that many calories because you are giving your body a chance to slow down and rest.

If you have the time you can do a mix of both exercises although cardio should be more since it would help you to lose those unwanted fats. Just match your cardio with some muscle toning exercises so that when you lose those fats you'd not end up looking like you're sick for a month. Muscle toning exercises would help prevent your arms and other muscle areas from sagging as a result of losing some fats. It's more like unwrapping yourself to a beautiful surprise within.

Sounds like your pretty covering everything i would suggest for exercise. I would try abit of jogging, even if it's on a treadmill everything works. also if your on a diet this could be the reason why you think it isn't working, it might not be the right one for you. Kudos ~Goodluck! ~Joey

When beginning you need to do 80% cardio 20% muscle toning. This is because even if you have the most toned muscles- they won't be visible if you have a layer of fat over them. Cardio is essential to burn this fat and it also burns more calrories. As you continue with your weight loss you'll want to start doing less cardio and more muscle training as you start to notice your body becoming more toned. http://www.shapefit.com/training.html Go to that site for some effective toning excercises. Hope this helps and good luck!

I am also working on unloading some extra pounds and have found that a combo of cardio and strength training is doing wonders for me...but I make sure my cardio is no less than 40 mins a day and really gets my heart racing..I do yoga every day and strenght training (for now) 2 to 3 times a week....also I watch what i eat for the most part not so much dieting cuase I suck at that LOL but I ahve been eating cleaner/healthier and having smaller portions as well plus I try not to eat at night AND I've upped my water intake as well to no less than 2 - 3 Lts a day on most days

Honestly if you are working out six days a week, you want to be focussing on NOT working out. I'm not being funny...life is too short friend
