Your Five Senses. Which One Could You Give Up?

If you had to loose one of your five senses, which one could you do without?
Sight
Hearing
Touch
Smell
Taste
I would have to say out of all of them the one I could do without is Smell.
I could then be able to sit next to the most smelliest person on the bus and not bat an eyelid!!!
What would yours be and why?

If you have to get technical, if you lost your sence of smell, you would most likely loose your sence of taste as well. If I had to choose though, it would have to be hearing. Only because I have had a bad week dealing with people, and right now would really love to not have to listen to anyone crying and complaining. LOL

Oh definitely I'd give up taste - would make dieting a whole lot easier anyway. Although I think if you lost taste you might lose smell too (or is it the other way round?) and if possible I'd like to keep my sense of smell. Yes there are people I would prefer never to have to smell again but some smells are great - roses, home baking, fresh rosemary, babies heads, DKNY perfume, etc. Would hate to never be able to smell them again.

Ah, the smell of babies is the most wonderful, purest smell. When mine were little I wanted to bottle their smell forever.
I may be having second thoughts about losing my smell now!
Cheers!!

It would have to be my sense of smell, but my reason is because I have already lost most of that. So for me, giving up my sense of smell would not really be all that different. But if I had to choose another, I guess it would have to be touch. If I can't feel anything then I also can't hurt, maybe then I could be more active and more adventurous!

That's really nice, but, frankly, I don't really miss it. I can still smell some things and sometimes I get phantom scents, but I also don't smell the skunk that just got hit by a car so it balances -lol.

I can't give up any one of them all the way long:
Your opinion!!!
how to give up smelling, if it's right that you'll be free to sit beside any dirty person so you can be that person cause you can't smell. [just for instance:) ]
God made each part on us creativity in the way that you can't give up any of those parts and,
If someone lose one of those senses I think it affects on the other senses by a way or another.

"Smell and taste go togther" precisely. I like to be able to taste what I am putting in my mouth. Sometimes this is when you can detect if there is something wrong with the food....

I would have to say sense of smell even if it effects sense of taste. I want to be able to see and hear my grandchild as they do all their firsts. I want to be able to touch their soft skin. I want to be able to hold hands with my husband and feel that firm grasp.

As its hypothetical, you only lose one sense so you will keep your taste!LOL
The sense of touch would definately be a hard one to give up, I agree with you.
Thanks for your response

I think it would be my sense of sight that I have to give up then. I think I've already seen almost all the wonderful things that this world has to offer, all the people, places and things -living/non-living. And it sometimes causes me to commit to a sin, to which I cannot control because I am only a human. I have the tendency to look at things that I know I shouldn't be looking at. I think, for me, it is better to loose a part of my body and go to heaven were I know it can be replaced, than have it all complete but go to the flaming fires of hell..

I would not give up any of my senses. but in case a situation arises where i have to lose one of my five senses i would probalby lose my sense of smell because the rest all plays important roles in our lives. The next thing that i may lose is the sense of taste.

What a good question! I cannot fathom giving up a sense. How about my common sense? Most people I know are lacking that one anyway! Joking aside, it would definately be a hard choice.
If I couldnt see my children each day I would die...or simple things like an old couple holding hands, a horse running free across a field, or not just seeing my children, but seeing the wonder on their faces when they discover new things.
Smell, it seems alot of people pick this one. Smelling my childrens hair is a daily breath of life I could not live without. Smelling the earth after a rainfall, walking down the coffee bean isle at the local market and savoring the wonderful bean smell. Christmas...the smells of it make life worth living.
Hearing, I thought about choosing this one because of crying and fighting...but to not hear laughter or quiet whispers of children. To hear music, the stuff of life. All the bad sounds in the world pale in comparison to the good!
Touch is an absolute no brainer. To feel my childrens hand in mine I could not give up. Or to run your hand over the coat of a horse, to feel wet grass under your feet. What about when your spouse or lover touches your face? Could you live without that beautiful caress? I could not.
Taste could be my choice. I do love the taste of a few things. A good cup of coffee, freshly baked bread...can you imagine smelling those things and not being able to savor them? UGH! What a hard one. I hope to never have any sense lost. I have heard though that if you lose one sense the other four step up and become more sensitive or alert. That may make losing one easier to handle.
I guess that brings me back to my common sense...that might be the only one I'd willingly part with!

I had to wipe a tear from my eye as I read this. It really comes home how lucky we are to have all our senses.
Your argument has made it in and it should be 6 senses.
No common sense seems logical to me even if it no longer is logical to you!!LOL
Thanks, I really enjoyed reading your response.

Wow, that's a hard question to answer... All these senses play major roles in my
life. I guess if I have to loose one it would be for a greater cause. Giving up my hearing, touch, smell and taste wont be of any good to anybody. Mine eyes can go to a recipient who haven't seen light since birth. That way, my sight lives on to experience a whole new perspective. Cheers!

I would have to say my sight because everything else would be enhanced i'd feel thing's that people take for granted hear thing's i have never heard before, taste things with great quaility and smell rasberries a mile away...Beside's that i know my suroundings like the back of my hand and could walk through it with my eye's closed...

Wow, you are the only one who has said sight, but you have given a good argument as to why! They do say all your other senses are heightened when you lose one.
Thanks.

If given a choice, i would say i could go on without the sense of sight- i know that its probably the most important of all but i would rather be blind than deaf and not be able to hear music, i would rather be blind than not being able to smell the delicious meal my mom is preparing or the milky smell of my baby's breath, the perfume on my loved ones chest- i would rather go blind than not be able to feel my baby's touch, my familys hug and kisses, the cold wind, the warm sun...and taste-i cannot live without taste.. i love eating- you might as well kill me than take my sense of taste off.. =)

This is really so difficult, because each of your senses supply you with just so much input. So, if I had to choose I think I would give up smell. It would be difficult, I considered touch, but I couldn't imagine how I would manage if I couldn't feel the pavement, sidewalk or sand beneath my feet. Would my balance be effected by it, and the others would completely be out of the question. Yep...it would be touch...SS

well in that case, although I wouldnt ever want to hgave any such situation practically in my life, but still If I have one, I would prefer to lose my sense of smell -- the most flexible one -- because comparatively I see only this one as less important!!! Hey don't react people, less important means in comparison to the other four....

I have to agree that smell would be the easiest one to give up. I've always had a real problem figuring out what to answer when people say which would you give up, hearing or sight, because I'm a really aural person even much moreso than i am visual, but I wouldn't like to give up my sight either because I love what I see, lol - I just don't have a very good visual memory, meaning that I have trouble with faces sometimes, and I can't picture people very clearly if I haven't just been staring at them for a long time, lol. Anyway, I like your options better, because I do think that I could do without my sense of smell if I had to, but being without sight or sound or touch would be incredibly awful.

I have so much admiration for people who have lost their sight and still venture out into the world. It takes a very strong and courageous person to be able to do this.
Thanks for your response!!

Well, that's a difficult one. I wouldn't want to give up my sight or hearing, beucase i think they would affect me the most in getting on with my life. Giving up touch could be dangerous, as you wouldn't know if you'd hurt yourself or if what you were doing was hurting so you wouldn't know to stop. smell is important as i love scented candles, perfume, scented bath products etc. Taste is important as i love nice foods and enjoy eating. Hmm, i honstly don't know!

I'd have to agree with smell too. It seems the least troublesome to lose. Though I would miss the smell of certain things. I would also worry about not smelling a fire. My mother was born unable to smell, however, and she's been fine. It seems my sniffer was determined to make up for it and I am very sensitive to scents.

I know what you mean and sometimes it does not do us any favours. I smell things and other people look at me as if I am making it up!!
Thanks
