This is an Indian herb and has innumerable medicinal properties. People in ancient homes in India get up early in the morning and worship this plant because they treat it just like a goddess. The leaves are eaten raw or crushed and juiced up. The juice has the best medicinal value. Please post in other good effects taht i might have missed out.

I was intrigued by this post so I did some reading about Tulsi. It is a holy herb (similar to basil) which is worshipped by many faiths. It is reported to enhance the immune system, fight off infection, improve memory, relieve stress, improve night-blindness, and increase longevity among many other things. It is reported to be similar to Ibuprofen in its anti inflammatory effects for the relief of arthritic pain. It seems to be a safe herb to take in moderation (as the packages direct, never more) with no side effects.
Here is a link to some very basic information about its medicinal uses: http://hinduism.about.com/od/ayurveda/a/tulsibenefits.htm

hi krishna! lemme first acknowledge that its a very good discussion indeed..
Ocimum Sanctum is the botanical name of Tulsi, I know this coz i was a botany student. It has lot of medicinal properties and is also called as HEALING HERB..Hindus actually worship this plant & tulsi leaves are part of every puja that they perform. 'Tulsi vivah' is a fixed event in hindu calendar..
Tulsi is used a lot in ayurvedic medicines and it is also used raw..well not to forget that it also tastes good....:)

Tulsi is revered plant finding a place almost at par with divinity mostly I feel owing to its medicinal value,as you have already stated in your post.
I get a great sense of peace and tranquility whenever i am near tulsi plant.I sense an aura of god around it.Its might be because i grew up seeing my elders worshippin tulsi after everyday puja and while offering jal(neer) to sun god and going around it doing parikrama.
Yes,its leaves are consumed in various ways that you have mentioned and is a very good cure for cold and cough and asthama too,if taken first thing in the morning.
Parents encourage me to study near this plant in the morning for, they believe the air around it is very conducive to memory retention.I don't know how far its true.
