How did the whole "Tooth Fairy" thing get started?

Clearly the Tooth Fairy is a disturbed individual. Think about it. Why would a fairy want loose teeth? Even more bizarre, why would she pay good money for them? There are no answers here, only questions.

yeah I have always wondered that myself. I amuse it was something that someone started years ago for childern when they loose their baby teeth. I thought it was sort of werid myself to put your tooth under your pillow to get money.

I think the tooth fairy was created to make the act of losing a tooth less traumatic for a child. This way they have the money to look forward to so you can distract them from the pain that accompanies having their tooth pushed out. A little off the subject perhaps but I once saw a license plate that had "2THFARY" on it. The only thing we came up with is that this car must be owned by a gay dentist.

Well there was no tooth fairy in OUR family. I felt a bit ripped off - while all my anglo friends were getting money, my "meditteranean" mum and dad said the tooth fairy was rubbish BUT they told me that if they took my teeth and threw them on the roof, supposedly, the tooth that came out would be straight. LOL A greek urban myth but it worked and saved them a lot in dental bills.
