I have been going through a lot of stress lately and I need something to calm/relax me. I have heard many people say that pilates helps, but others say yoga is best. If you do either when you under stress, which do you think is more helpful? If you don't stress (lucky!!) which do you think would be more responsive in your opinion?

Hatha Yoga - if you need to relax, Hatha Yoga is the key. For long term relaxation - you need a combo of Yoga, Pilates and DEFINITLY Cardio exercise. To really help your body fight stress in the long term, you need cardiovascular fitness. It will help you be able to cope with stress.
But if you need something to relax you before bed, certainly do Hatha Yoga. Exercise that increases your heart rate, like cardio or pilates will make it harder to fall asleep.

Whatever you do would be helpful to combat stress. Try them both and do what works best for you. Just breaking your routine and doing something different from whatever is causing the stress would be helpful in relieving the stress. It could be something as simple as going for a walk during you lunch break or something like that. If you are trying to decide between these two option, I do not think you can go wrong with eithor one. Just pick one and then do it.
I personally have never done pilates. But I have done yoga(Bikhram's Style - a type of hot yoga), and I thought it was an amazing workout. I would highly recommend it. Good Luck.

Hmmmm... I have done a little bit of both, and I think yoga is more relaxing, more about the gentle stretching and body/mind awareness, while pilates is more strenuous and helps to build your strength and endurance (though yoga can be pretty hard at times too). I think any form of physical activity is great for stress, but I would guess yoga is probably better for loosening tension and retaining your stability both physically and mentally because it's all about your mind and body intergration and the meditation has a calming effect on those nagging inner thoughts. If you're training for dance or something like that, I would go for pilates, but I wouldn't think it would have the "cleansing" effect that yoga does. =)

I woudl highly recommend Yoga vs Pilates - Pilates seems more exercise focused whereas Yoga is great exercise but helps you focus on breathing and relaxing into poses (especially if you choose a medatative yoga vs. exercise yoga class)
