Household conveniences-which could you do without for a week?

washer and dryer - washer and dryer-could you go without for a week?

We have lived out in the country now for nearly a year and a half. Life is is quiet and laid back. We have well water on our property so for the time being we are not able to have a dishwasher. I have always had a dishwasher in the home, so for me this has been an adjustment. There are days when I am exceptionally tired that I would love to just put my dishes in a dishawasher and be done!! Today being one of those days it made me think about this question. Which household appliance could you go without for a week? The washer/dryer,dishwasher or microwave?

I could easily do without my microwave, I only use it for cooking porridge in the morning and I can do that on the stove. Getting rid of the dishwasher would be hard for me as I hate doing dishes but I think I would want the washing machine most as I do about 5 loads a week.

A dishwasher. We have one but I have never used it. I grew up in a home where my mother always hand washed all of our dishes. When I first had a dishwasher a long time ago - I felt like it never got the dishes clean enough and it seemed like such a waste of time and water because you had to rinse them off before you put them into the dishwasher - why not just add some soap, wash them and skip the whole dishwasher thing to begin with? I could also live without our coffee maker, mixer, blender, toaster and crockpot for a week.

I have heard some folks say that they thought dishwashers were a waste of time. I imagine that if I had not grown up with a dishwasher I would not be whining about not having one now. Kuddos to you, that is a good size list of appliances you could go without.

Well, I've never had a dishwasher or a dryer (except at mom and dad's when I was growing up). I've got a dryer hook-up, but no dryer. Washing machine is definitely needed. If I went a week w/o washing, I'd have a lot of catching up to do. So, my answer is the microwave. My hubby and I only use it to heat/re-heat out tea/coffee. We rarely use it for anything else. Oh, wait.........hubby uses it for baked potatoes for a few minutes before he puts them in the oven. Other than that, nothing!

Wow, living in apartments in my city my whole life, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers are not permitted. I have never ever even used a dishwasher. Some people don't know how good they have it with all these great appliances in their homes. So in my case there is not much for me to miss. LOL. PS - can't even have a pet either. I need to move!!!

There are pros and cons wherever you live..I imagine that you have a neighborhood laundromat and shoppng close by to where you live..probably in short walking distance right? As far as having no pets...its only bad not having pets if you are a pet lover!! Plus you don't have to worry about pet hairs!!

I've never had a dishwasher so I could certainly live without that. And my dryer, as most of the clothes and diapers go out on the line.

I could deal with no dishwasher or microwave for a week. I normally hand wash my dishes and rarely use the microwave. My kids would probably miss it very much though. They seem to nuke everything. LOL

I guess the microwave...but I would miss the popcorn. I am curious..I had a house with a well and we used a dishwasher. Why can't you use a dishwasher? In fact our house was way country, septic tank and used coal to heat the house. We also got evacuated due to flooding of the creeks around us.

I think the reason that we are unable to have a dishwasher is because the water pressure that we have with our water well is very low. It takes at least 30 minutes for our clothes washer to fill up with water during the rinse cycle and you generally cannot run the kitchen or bath sink and the shower at the same time. I think with such low water pressure the dishwasher would not get enough water pressure to get the dishes cleaned.

Your so lucky to be able to live out in the country. I'd give up half my appliances to be able to live out in the country. A dishwasher is the first thing I could do without..I don't mind washing dishes for some reason. I couldn't do without a refridgerator. I could do very easily without a microwave. A washer and dryer are really nice, but I've used those old fashioned washers where you squeaze your clothes through a roller, and then I'd hang all my clothes outside, which I loved doing. Gotta have my gas stove, too (although I've cooked on wood stoves/ovens). So I guess the two things I'd have a hard time doing without is my fridge/freezer, and a gas stove/oven.

I could live without the dishwasher - opps haven't had one for 20 years so have adjusted. I could not live without the microwave - 90% of our hot food comes out of there.

The dryer maybe i need the washer and the kitchen appliances. I don't have a dishwasher though. But I am interested in hy you can't have one because you have well water, my x is a well driller and hase been for almost 20 years and i have never heard that , my mother in law and several friends have dishwashers and they all have wells too. Where we live there is no city water everyone has wells.

Well I have just been informed by my hubby said that we cannot have a dishwasher or disposal because of the septic system. Apparently, the landlord does not want a dishwasher used because they would put more corrosives in the septic system. However, he is open to discussing getting one in the future..we wil see!!

I could go without the microwave, I have for a long time infact. I don't like the way food tastes when it's nuked, ours conked out on us awhile ago and I haven't bothered to replace it. I despise dishes so I really need a dishwasher! I stayed with a relative without one, I had to remember to wash all dishes after eating, it was such a hassle. When I have a dishwasher, it's not a big deal if they set out for awhile. I also have to have a washer/dryer, I have a young son in cloth diapers, plus the laundry of two adults so I can't imagine hand washing that or spending time at a laundromat.

I did a year without a dishwasher and I hated it. Defiantly could live without a microwave. I love to cook.

Well I could never go without my microwave. That is essential especially with a family. Well I used to have a dishwasher too, at my last house, but moved here and do not have one. The only thing I miss with that is the seemingly sterilization from the heat/steam. I don't mind not having one though. But lets see....LOL one I could live without? Well since it is February I pick my ceiling fan :)

Can I choose two appliances I couldn't live without? They would be the washing machine and the Hoover. Both those would be a nightmare to do without, as difficult to wash clothes by hand or brush teh carpet by hand - it would take you all day. Other things like microwaves and dishwashers you can do without as they don't save that much time.

I lived out in the country most of my life, and my parents had spring water. Us kids was the dishwasher, lol. So I would have to say I could live without a dishwasher. I still have to wash my dishes sometimes, just makes me wonder why do I even have a dishwasher in the first place. I have to have my washer, and my dryer especially during the winter times. I can't cook so I need my microwave, lol.

I used to stay in the states where everything you mentioned was a need. But since I came back in my own country I guess it would be the washer I could not do without. Or to make it more simple, I could not do without my helper or my maid. Here in our country hiring a help is cheaper than buying an appliance. Though finding a very good one is like one out of ten chances.

I can live without my dishwasher, but then tht is easy for me to say because mine is working fine. I need my washer because I hate dragging clothes to the laundromat and I love having a dryer, but that is also something that I could get by without, just don't want to.
