Why is Grey's Anatomy so much better than ER?

I guess this is a matter of opinion, but I imagine lots of you would agree with me. Why do you think Grey's is so successful? I mean, both stories involve multiple characters' story lines and stressful life-and-death medical interactions.
What makes one so much more heart wrenching than the other? I always tried to get in ER when it was the big show, but it just didn't do anything for me.
My best guess is that Shonda (the writer) is an absolute GENIUS!!!

I love both of the shows. I do admit Greys is a better show. Maybe its because we learn more about the characters outside of the hospital. There is also more romance on Greys. Last nights show was terrific. I am so glad that Meridith is ok.

Gosh, me too! For a few seconds, I actually didn't think she'd pull through. I'm so glad she's okay!
You might be right about learning about the characters outside of the show. But you know, it almost seems like the Grey's Anatomy characters are in the hospital much more than the ER people were. Or maybe I've just forgotten!

i know we have heard things about one of the characters in the media but i still think its the chemistry between the actors, the same reason friends was such a hit, the actors just seem to have great chemistry on screen and also the scripting is probably superior to ER. Even though the both deal with the same issues i think the characters in Greys Anatomy are more beleivable and funnier and the underlying feel of the show isnt so gloomy, ER always makes me feel depressed whereas Greys usually makes me cry at some point during the episode but the general tone of the episodes just arent as gloomy. Love the show so much i hope it keeps going the same way it has been

I think Grey is more successful that E.R coz of the casting and a more youthful feel of the show.E.R is more matured and very technical at times. And ofcourse Grey's has McDreammy and MCSteamy.E.R had once George Clooney but that was years ago.

You have a good point. Have you ever noticed how most of the sitcoms have totally hot girls married to this fat, unattractive men? It's one of my biggest pet peeves!
Maybe now that the networks have seen how successful a show is when both the men AND women are hot, maybe they'll make the men work harder at being fit and worthy of their hot costars! I'm all for equality here...
I mean come on, us girls deserve some eye candy too!

I'm not sure why either but there is something more endearing about the characters of Grey's Anatomy. I watched ER a few years ago but no longer do. Grey's Anatomy just has that special...something that keeps me coming back for more.

I have watched a little bit of both shows. I would agree I like Grey's Anatomy better. I think I like it better because even though both are medical dramas, Grey's Anatomy has a little bit of humor in it. Er characters seem to be so serious all the time.
There's also the friendship factor...Grey's anatomey seems more like a group friendship. More than 2 people are grouped together as friends. ER tends to be more about hooking up.
That's just my opinion LOL

Good comments. There definitely is more humor in Grey's Anatomy. And maybe it is because the characters are younger, but I can somehow relate to them so much better than I ever could with ER.
And you're right about the group friendship. ER seemed to have so many disjointed storylines. It was too much to keep up with!

I like both shows but I prefer Grey's Anatomy. I think it's because Grey's Anatomy talks more about personal stuff which makes the show much much better.
ER has some personal things but it's much more about the people that go there.

I am a big ER fan and have watched it since day 1. I tried - more than once - to get into Grey's Anatomy but it just doesn't do it for me. I don't know why - but I also loved Chicago Hope more than Grey's Anatomy. But then I'm looking for medical content as much as relationships. Different strokes for different folks.

Er was the boom when it first came out and many stars made their debut from the program. But like any other series on tv it has just about run its course and now it is grey's anatomy's time. Also grey's has more comedy where as er was always drama primarily. Seems like the public wants to see more comedy in hospital series, like scrubs being another one. TV tries to reflect what people are asking for, but after awhile they grow stale and need new stuff.

i totally have to agree with you on this one, grey's anatomy is one of the best shows going i think, i love every time it comes on and wont miss it. there so much to each of the characters and it just makes you coming back for more, but with ER i think i watched a few episodes, and i felt like i was trying to get the gift of it, but with greys it all just flows and you dont have to try. (hope that makes sence)

ER had it's day I think. Every bit as dynamic in personalities as Grey's is now. I think we fell in love with the characters George Clooney and Julilanna Margalies (sp) played and when they left the show it left us empty of sorts. Noah Wiley stayed and that helped a bit. But I think in 2-3 years or less we will see the same type of shift with Grey's. I hope not, but it's inevitable. They all get big offers to go to film and off they go. Like Salmon swimming up stream they enter into that sacred ground some make it some don't.
I agree that Grey's sure keeps you captivated for now. I Never miss an episode.

I don't know if Grey's is better or if it is that it is new. ER has been on for how long and it is still a favorite but to some people it could be getting old and Grey's is just newer and slightly different.
I loved ER but slowly the characters that were my favorite started to slowly leave so I rarely watch.

I never liked ER, i just could not get into it. But Greys, I think it a lesson each week in a way and no matter my problem I find like a life lesson, like yep that right i agree.

I LOVE Grey's Anatomy!!!! the last few episodes have had me at the edge of my seat! I think that one thing that makes it so good is like you said, the mutiple character story lines. I never really got into ER, but would never miss an episode of Grey's!

Shondra THE writer?...shows have waaaaay more than one single writer and one would have to give out more credit than that...I think the show uses music and humor more heartfelt and more realistically than ER does..ER comes off more "serious" and stiff and tends to lean more heavily on medical terms and spouting them out

I love ER and think that GA is riding on the back of that show....we will just have to see if GA can last as long as ER has...and how many seasons has that been?
GA will be worn out in probably a couple more seasons.
Just my opinion from a person who has watched ER religiously since the show began!
