Whoa, slow down sunny, let's think this through! The number represents the number of responses you have posted. You are allowed to receive credit for up to two responses per discussion. The higher the number, the more responses you have made.
Now, I suggest instead of worrying with that number, that you worry more about making good responses (usually more than one or two lines of text).
I have found that if I add pertinent information to a discussion, the more the better. I actually seem to earn more on longer, fewer responses, than if I make fewer, shorter responses.
Also, once the number makes it to 100, you will receive the infamous star. Another way to be rated. You can hover the mouse over the star to find someone's actual rating.
I am still trying to make it to the next goal which is 500, there are many more advantages offered once you reach this number. For example, after reaching 500, you will have the ability to cut and paste into discussions.
Also, to be a responsible member, remember to rate each response in the discussion. And after starting a discussion, don't forget to mark the best response.
Last tip, try to visit members profile pages, you don't earn any money in doing so, but you can find interesting facts, new links, or build relationships. All of which will help you in the long run.

The number next to your name is the number of responses you have given to discussions.
In order to make more money from each post you need to give long answers that are helpful and answer the question then you might be chosen for best answer and I assume that gets you more money.
