Is your dinner table "dressed up"...or "plain and simple?"

When you sit down to an everyday dinner in your home do you have linens/tablecloths on with place settings in an attractive fashion...Do you use serving dishes to compliment your dinner plates? Are candles a part of your evening meals each day? Do you use cloth/fabric napkins neatly folded? Or are you the plain and simple maybe placemats maybe nothing under who cares what kind of dinnerware...with paper napkins or paper towels..and serving dinner straight off the stove? Do you reserve a "properly set" table for special occasions or never care one way or the other?...Do you have china and crystal that you never use or do you use it everyday?...Or is dinner usually fast food that doesn't ever see the tabletop and gets eaten out of the bag in front of the television?...

When there is company it is dressed up, the rest of the time it is a catch all for bills and anything else that can hit it. LOL There are only two of us now and we eat on tv trays in the den, so the table is just not used that much. If I had my way we would not even have a table in the house.

Alot of times we serve dinner right off the stove, we sit at the table, with placemats, but most of the time we use paper plates. If we have my parents over, or friends over, we set the table properly, and have serving bowls that we place on the table. So I would say that we save the "properly set" table for special occassions. But I've never set candles as part of an evening meal. Maybe if it was a romantic dinner with just me and my hubby I would.

I guess it depends on a couple of things here that help me decide how to set my table. If my husband is working and my daughter is gone, no I don't bother setting the table and I usually eat in the living room in front of the tv, if we have company I go all out with cloth napkins, serving dishes and the good plates and glasses etc. If it's just my husband, daughter and myself I still set the table w/ paper napkins, regular plates and usually put the cookware w/ th food on hotpads on the table.

If I eat alone I sometimes actually set a place at the table and light some candles...but usually that night would be spent in front of the tv...eating something no one else likes.. Then there are the nights I decide to go for it and dress the entire table...and then...the nights the dinner is served from the stove...but eaten by candlelight...as you can tell I love candles!!!!

I don't have a dinner table. Yet. It's top of our list though because the kids are getting a little bit too big to be crowding round the coffee table although it is a big one.
They have been taught table manners and so I have no issues with them sitting at a dinner table and eating with no fuss.
I think I'll be going with the plain and simple look though. I don't see the point of dressing the table up when we're eating with the kids.
If I'm doing a nice meal to celebrate with my partner then yeah, I'll dress the table up, and use candles and stuff. I am a sucker for things like that lol.

Hello, this is 2007, everybody works outside the home. Do you think this life is an episode of Leave It to Beaver or Father Knows Best? Who has time to set a fancy table after working 40 hours a week.
In my house it is dinner from the stove to the table. I do have placemats, but no serving dishes. If it is leftover night, it is fridge to microwave to the table no switching containers in between. Why dirty more dishes?
I only bother with serving dishes on extra special occassions or holidays when we have company. Otherwise, it is not muss, no fuss!

LOL...I know it's real life...and I know the 40-50 hour work week...I asked this question because I encounter many people who talk about their dinner hours and how important some of these things are in their preparation for a family meal...no "head in the clouds attitude" here...and no judgements...just a query about the differences people have in their "mealtime expectations" of themselves or their "settings".... I believe your description seems to be the norm...and certainly didn't mean to be offensive....

no, we don't dress up our dining table because there is only two of us me and my hubby... and we live in a small flat... so our dining table is also not that large... there is no point in decorating it and we think it is just too formal... but we do eat together at the dining table to chat...

Usually I am very casual in this thing. I dont care much about these things. Even at times I do my dinner on my bed.

Yes when we sit down for our evening meals the tablecloth is always on the table, but it does not mean that we put the settig to be attractive as we are not expecting anyone so we are very laid back in this way as you are aware that the majority of Aussie's are very laid back people and do not make any fancy setting unless we are having guests for dinner or any other meals. We do use napkins though and they are neatly folded. We serve our food straight from the stove. But when we have visitors for any meal we always clean up the table and make it very presentable so that they feel comfortable in our home

We have a table with 6 chairs, everyday we sit there and have our dinner.I decorate my dinner table with a clean table cloth,it may be of plastic or cotton.it should be printed or it should be with amroidary on wtite cloth,i love that very much.In the middle of table i keep a flowerwaze with flowers in it ,the flowers are eighter synthetic or natural.I put a fruit bowl with different fruits in it.my dinner table is 10 feet far from my kitchen, there should not be any sounds of vessels near dinner table. We use stainless steel vessels for making, servingand and eating dinner.

We always have a table cloth on the table, because I think it looks nicer (might be my age showing here), but generally I will change it if someone is coming. We do sit down together as a family for one meal a day, and now it is the evening meal because our son is working civilised hours again. I think that having that one meal together is very important as it allows social interaction that would probably not happen otherwise.
We do use a dinner set, because that is all we have actually but the table is not set up fancy for everyday occassions. We will have friend over, and unless it is for some special event we follow the same procedure that we have when there is just the family present. In fact our friends are generally considered to be part of the family anyway.
All of our meals are home cooked, and the only time we would ever have "fast food" is when we are out, if it is over a mealtime that is. It would be a rare time when we ate at anywhere other than the table, although from time to time we have been somewhere, arrived home late and so there has been a television program we want to watch. On those rare times, we would still sit at the table but have the television on as well. The television can actually be seen from the table anyway, but is usually not on while we have the evening meal.
Fancy settings are reserved for special events, and then I will use the good dinner set, glasses etc. They do get used but just not for everyday, as I do like to have a nice table setting for those special celebrations we all enjoy from time to time. :)

Our friends are treated like family also!!!! It is so nice to be able to share a meal together..it just gives everyone a time to talk, laugh, eat and bond....I don't think liking a tablecloth shows your age...I have a friend that is 23 and she loves my collection of tablecloths so much she has begun her own...now in her little apartment she keeps her small table "dressed" with a variety of cloths...she would always comment on my many fabrics and prints on my table...Nothing has to be fancy but I have certainly learned over the years that even simply placing a tablecloth on the table for leftovers seems to create an ambience that I am attracted to!!! Good for you with the homemade food...It is so much better for us than all the easy to use processed foods...:)

WE have everyday dishes that are rather nice (not expensive but very pretty in shape ..sort of square). WE always have cloth placemats and candles in the middle of the table. I don't own fine china...I am not that fancy! I do use paper napkins (for convenience). Food is served into bowls and plates rather than in pots. I feel my family deserves to have meals this way. I want them to always remember being around the table.

I just stripped down my table and am in the process of redressing it with a new cloth....I think I do it to change the look of the space...there really is no rule about it...everyone has a different opinion!!!! Nice to have a nice set of dishes .....some don't even have that...:)

Usually, our dinner table is plain and simple. We use table cloths and placemats allright, but I believe that this is commonplace. There are dinner plates and silverwares which we use everyday. The dining area is well lit and I am never sold to the idea of holding candle light dining. This is even strengthened by the news which keeps on saying that fires happen due to candles left burning or faulty electrical wiring. Hardly would we ever hear of another cause of house fires.
We always eat home cook foods. The health department has been informing the populace regarding the disadvantages of taking too much food which we secure from the fastfood centers. Save for the pizzas because my kids love to get some from pizza hut once in a while.

Homecooked meals are the best...they taste the best, they are the healthiest and they are definitely the most economical....whether or not a table is set in a fancy or simple way does not matter in the long run...the fellowship a family enjoys eating meals together is the biggest benefit..and you are right about the candles...I am very careful with mine...never leaving a room without someone in it to attend to a burning candle.. and if everyone is leaving the room...the candle is blown out.....

You are going to hate my response. My dinner table is my computer desk. My computer cost so much I couldn' afford a desk at this time so..... I put it on the only table that would work. We never used it anyway.
