My sister has begun having?panic attacks when she drives. She stops at green signal lights and even has to make a right hand turn in order to avoid the light all together. I have been in the car and it can be frightening when we are in heavy traffic and she stops at the green light. She has been to counseling and therapy but it isn't helping. Does anyone have this problem or maybe a suggestion?

Yes, I used to get panic attacks all the time while driving. It was horrible. There is no worse feeling than being out of control, when you are supposed to be in control for your own safety and that of others. I had to stop driving all together about 3 years ago. I missed it at first, but now I don't. I still get panic attacks really bad. Have her consult her doctor for any possible medications that can help. Unfortunatly, she won't be able to drive while on any of these medications. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Maybe the counseling will eventually help and she will get over them and be able to drive safely again. God Bless.

My sister is going to taking driving lessons. She was told to do this by her counselor. She is hoping this is going to work and so am I.

I do not drive, I know I should. But my husband has been driving for over 42 years and he does have panic attacks when he has to over over an overpass or a bridge!

I dont have them recurring, but in the past from time to time I have had a panic attack while driving. It always involves something completely silly. I have been late to work because I couldnt drive across a railroad crossing and had to turn around and take the long way. It was completely at random and I had no warning. I just got there and had to stop and started hyperventilating. It was a terrible experience. I truly feel for your sister. I dont have any earth shattering suggestions, except to see if maybe she can determines what triggers them and move on from there. Good Luck
