Hi, I just heard about a new movie entitled 'Pregnant in America' that is about just that. American women normally birth in the hospital, and 98% of the babies born in this country are drugged. The movie trailer says that something like 66% of hospitals revenue comes from pregnancy and childbirth, suggesting that this is why they do so many tests and offer drugs and c-sections. Are we as a culture being duped by the very doctors we once could trust? What are your opinions on this, and do you think you'll see the movie when it comes out later this year??? Go to pregnantinamerica.com to view the trailer.

I look forward to watching this movie. I am a firm believer that birth has been taken over by greedy corporations and fearful doctors. It absolutely saddens me that so many women are not given accurate information when it comes to the birthing process. Our bodies are amazing! We can birth naturally and without intervention most of the time. There is no reason that so many women are fooled into believing that their bodies are not capable! I have had two natural births, both in a hospital setting. I fought hard against any interventions and was able to have positive experiences. Looking back, I really wish I had had homebirths. Technology is a wonderful advantage in the rare circumstances it is called for, but it is not needed in your average birth. Our society is so afraid of things. Childbirth being no exception. We need to educate women that there IS an alternative to the standard birthing practices. I began Midwifery school several years back, but have had to put it on hold. I hope to return within the next 10 years.

Thank you for your input. I've thought very seriously about midwifery myself, and have several great books on the subject, but put it off because I felt I needed to experience childbirth firsthand before choosing midwifery as a career. I will have my first son in April, at home, with a midwife... I am taking Bradley classes right now to educate myself and my partner, and the more I learn the more angry I become at just how misinformed mothers are in this country! It's an outrage! I seriously hope the movie gives clear, hard facts that make women think a bit harder about the choices they make about childbirth. I pity the doctor that would have to deal with me should I give birth in a hospital. Bottom line, it is MY body and I have to give permission before anybody injects me or my baby with anything. Period. So many women are led to believe they have to do things because of hospital 'policy' or because it's 'standard procedure'. I refuse. I wish more women would refuse with me! Thanks again for your post!

i think we should watch that movie so we will know what is happening during giving birth, how the doctors do. it is to open our minds to have safe labor and delivery.giving birth is a natural thing,we do not need mediacal intervention to do that. except for some cases.

I find the cesarian rate in the US to be very alarming. My friend had a doctor perform a c-section on her simply because she did not feel like waiting around and was due to go on vacation the next day. My friend was in labor for only 6 hours. I chose a midwife (in a hospital setting). I was in labor for 21 hours. Glad I wasn't at the other hospital.

this sounds really interesting. Even in the UK when I don't think they get extra money from c-sections they still do a lot of them. I would be really interested to see this film. Unfortunately the trailer didn't work on my computer, but thanks for drawing my attention to the film, I'll certainly look out for it.

I posted about this film a week ago and only got one response (from a friend, lol). I'm glad to see a lot of responses here. I am trying to spread the word about this film. For those of you who are waiting for this film to come out to learn more, you don't have to wait. There is so much information out there about this topic and you can educate yourselves now!! I'm excited about this film because I'm hoping it will grab the attention of influental people. Childbirth in America is at crisis stage right now. Something has to be done. Women and babies are dieing and it doesn't have to be this way. We women have handed over our power and our bodies to "experts" who practice medicine WITHOUT an evidence base. Most of the normal hospital procedures are done so without any evidence to back them up and many have actually been proven to be harmful (such as constant fetal monitoring). I have to admit that I actually cry every single day about the state of childbirth in America. People just give full blind trust to drs who don't have their best interests at heart. Just read over on obgyn.net and see OBs flat out admit that they practice based on fear of litigation. Drs don't loose lawsuits where a c-section was performed. They only loose if they don't perform a c-section even if the c-section actually put you and your child at greater risk than continueing on with labor. I saw a PBS special the other day that I also found quite eye opening. Seeing the drs sit around and admit that they don't practice according to evidence. Here is a link if anyone cares to watch - hit "browse video list" to see "Born in the USA" in 4 parts: http://www.blackhillsportal.com/dbs/womankind/dyncat.cfm?catid=443 Also, I read an update from the maker of Pregnant in America last week (I'm on their mailing list). Here it is (man, I wish I could paste!!!): Dearest Friend, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! One year ago, I found out my wife was pregnant. I was not going to let her become a victim of our nation's childbirth system. I decided to make this movie. In the last few days we have received hundreds of emails from people like you who are ready for a change. I would like to thank you for sharing your stories with us. Some are inspiring, some deeply saddening, while others are informative and thought provoking. And all are important. There are many, many voices out there that need to be heard, and many stories that need to be listened to. That is why we decided to launch a new website which is being built right now. We hope to add something new each day until completed, so keep logging on. The website will have sections to share birth stories, gain information, post comments, communicate with us, communicate with each other, and even uplaod videos of births. We will use the website to communicate to all of you about release dates, previews and updates on what is happening with Pregnant in America. Perhaps most powerfully, PrengnantInAmerica.com will act as a catalyst for our message and a launching pad for our movement. My father used to say, "He who shouts the loudest is always heard." Let's get ready to shout real loud. A lot of you have been wondering how and when Pregnant in America will be released. Our goal is to premier at the Sundance Film Festival and have a major distribution company release Pregnant in America theatrically worldwide. The paradigm shift must happen on a cultural level; the worlds most powerful and influential celebrities, Hollywood executives and difference makers go to Sundance. We intend on being there, January 2008. Many of you are asking how you can help: 1. Keep being you, keep moving forward, you are making a difference. 1. Visit PregnantInAmerica.com often, email EVERYONE YOU KNOW about Pregnant in America. 1. Make whatever contribution you can afford or feel is right for you. (We are not a large production team and we need your contribution to make a difference.) 1. Always remember what my father said, He who shouts the loudest, is always heard. With Passion, Steve Buonaugurio Producer and Director - Pregnant in America
