Have you tried sculpting with Polymer Clay?

I have made a couple of attempts to sculpt with polymer clay and I have to tell you it's a blast. It's easy to work with and it helps to already have colors instead of just plain gray or white like many other sculpting mediums. You can take a look at a couple of my polymer clay sculptures on my MyLot home page and I would welcome a chat with anyone who enjoys working with polymer clay.

I have yet to do any sculpting withthe polymer clay. I sot into it just a few months ago as a way to make decorative beads for hair sticks. Then I started watching the DIY morning programs on HGTV...and that was how things got out of hand...LOL. I just got a pasta roller a couple of weeks ago and have been loving it, and am waitin gfor a bead roller to arrive, even though I have a bad feeling that I will never see it as I haven't seen any evidence that the company has billed and filled *sigh*.

Congrats on the new pasta machine! Sure makes mixing colors a whole lot easier. I hope you get your bead roller soon! I'd love to see some of the beads you make with them.

I love working with polymer clay. I haven't done much in the way of sculpture - can't get over the fear. But I love doing all sorts of techniques and covering all sorts of things.

Oh I love polymer clay too, used to be quite an addict! But with other things going on now I don't get it out very often. Just seeing your cane picture makes me want to get it all out of the box and whip out the old pasta machine! Skinner blend, here I come :D

I just wanted to say that Scooter is beautiful. I have a small amount of experience working with polmer clay, but I only use it to make my bears noses. It's a very versatile medium to work with though.

Thanks so much for the compliment on Scooter. He was inspired by a real live mouse that ran across my foot while I was in the bathroom. He startled me and when I gave a little yelp my husband asked me what was wrong. I said, "A little mouse just went scootin' across the top of my foot!" I caught him in a trap the next day, so this was a little memorial... LOL I can imagine it would make terrific bear noses! Great idea.

Oh that's adorable! You did a great job. My favorite pc is Premo for making beads and sculptures like Scooter but I love regular Sculpey (the flesh pink kind) for human type sculptures. I've tried making a couple of dolls with it and I'm afraid my sculpting skills need a bit of work yet for realistic looking humans!

I've done quite a lot of sculpting with polymer clay. That's my main thing. I'm working on learning bead making now, but I figure sculpting will always be my first love! You can see several of my items on the gallery page on my yahoo site. http://360.yahoo.com/clayladyinred I just love your little mouse! I can't believe that's your first sculpt! Well, I do believe it, but you know what I mean! LOL You did a wonderful job! I hope you will post more when you make them!

I love the mermaid! She's beautiful. Thanks for the compliments on the mouse. I'm glad to find someone else on hear who loves sculpting with polymer clay as much as I do. I started out making a wide variety of unusual OOAK bead sets and progressed in to sculpting. I don't sculpt too much any more, I'm addicted to jewelry making and chain mail at the moment but I still get the bug to sculpt now and then. I've got about 15 heads waiting for bodies right now! LOL.

I've only just started but I'm not to good at it, I wish I could make animals like yours, they are gorgeous. I made two living things one was supposed to be a hippopotamous head but it looked like a cross between a hippopotamus and a crocodile :( I tried doing a person it sort of looked ok though I was told it looked like an alien mixed with a person :(

Won't find that here for sure, where can I get that, online maybe? Maybe I can get it with my mylot savings. I really love to read and I'm sure I'd love it.

There is a great book by Catherine Dewey called Sculpting Life-Like Animals. It takes you step by step thru an entire sculpt. There are several different animals in there to try. It was very helpful. Pick it up if you can. Once you do a few of them it gets easier and easier. Thanks for the compliment on my sculpts and for the friend request too!

Amazon.com carries it, both of her books actually. She has one with instructions on human figures too. I need to correct the spelling though, her name is spelled with a K. Katherine Dewey. I have both books and they are wonderful and detailed with lots of pictures to follow.

No I haven't tried an inro yet. I started working with polymer then we put our house up for sale and I went to my parents for a month with my son to help with my sick grandfather, while I was away somebody that my agent was showing the house to squished everything I had not baked yet. There was a lot of loss because of that. Then the house sold and my stuff sat in storage for 3 months until we moved in here and then time has been a factor in not getting anything done. But I am slowly starting up again. Once the baby comes we'll see how much or how little time I really have.

I also like to make art jewelry. I work with metal mostly but I love beads and it's so satifying when you make your own! Have you had a chance to make an Inro yet? I love making them. Useful little carriers for various things too! Thanks for stopping by!

Adding my 2 cents -even if a bit late. I found that I could use my aging nail poish as paint on my polymer flowers. It takes very nicely. I'm too stingy to throw away nail polish, when its old and won't dry properly on nails, it will dry on the polymer. Love this hobby- Gotta be doing something with my hands when I watch tv. You are so creative, though. Thanks for bringing up this subject.

My rune stones were bisque fired ceramic. when I got them out to use, many had broken. A new set runs $40. so I decided to make my own. I picked up some polymer clays- fima, sculpey111, and another I can never remember. I have no instructions, so i thought I'd ask you for advice. these will be the size of a medium button- ovals, an eighth of an inch thick with a line drawing on them. They have to be baked, right? I bought 3 different clays so i could try each and see what I like best. Please tell me how to do this?

THANK YOU!!! It was so kind of you to take the time to write that all out for me. I'm printing it out right now to have handy when I get to do it. You saved me the trouble of wasting the sculpy 3 on this project, too. I will send you a picture when i get it done. Again my appreciation -

Hi Arcadian! So sorry about your ceramic rune stones. Such a shame. I would not recommend using the Sculpey 3. It tends to be very brittle and breaks easily. Fimo or Premo would probably be the best for your purpose. Both are very strong and a bit flexible after baking, very hard to break. 1. Condition your clay thoroughly so that is soft and easy to work with. Knead it for about 2 or 3 mintues. If you want your stones to look rough, you can mix in herbs or sand or even dirt if you wish. 2. Take a piece and roll it between your palms into a ball. Press into the general shape you want. Just remember to sprinkle a little cornstarch on your surface when you finally set it down or it will stick. 3. If you want them to be smooth and very flat you can sprinkle a little corn starch on it, put a sheet of paper on top and use something smooth to press it or use a rolling pin. 4. Etch your rune symbol into it. 5. Preheat your oven to the recommended temperature on the package. If you have a stand up oven thermometer I'd recommend using it. Especially if you're using a toaster oven. They are notorious for being way off on temperature and you don't want to burn your stones. 6. Place your stones on a glass dish, or metal sheet lined with paper. Place your stones on the paper and then cover the dish with aluminum foil. It will help create a more even heat. 7. If you like the look as is then you're done. If you want your stones smooth and shiney you can go to the next step. For smooth and shiney stones you will need some 600 or 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper. This is not regular sandpaper, you can usually find it in the automotive section of your local hardware store. Make sure it's wet/dry sandpaper because you'll be using it wet. Get a bowl of warm water and put a few drops of dish soap in the water. Sand the stones wet until it's as smooth as you want. Wash any residue off. Get a piece of rough cloth, denim works very well, polish the stone. The longer and harder you rub the shinier it gets. You can also seal it and make it even shiner by coating it with Future acrylic floor polish or any clear acrylic floor polish. Don't use anything else or it will ruin your stones. Good luck to you, I hope they work well for you. If you need any more help or have any questions you can PM me and I'll help as best I can.

You scultped those????? My, my you have a gift my friend. Those are stunning. I tried to reply to the picture but we are not on each others friend list. I sent you a request I hope you will accept. Maybe some of your talent will rub off on me just by being your friend. I am a potter and I enjoy both throwing on the wheel as well as hand building. But I have never even touched polymer clay. I have some interest in learning to work with metal clay.... have you tried it?

Thanks so much hon for the compliment :D and thanks for the friend request. I have added you to my friends list. I tried throwing on a wheel when I was in high school and really enjoyed it but I didn't keep it up. I may try it again sometime, I like getting my hands in wet clay. PMC is one I'm positively itching to try! One of these days very soon I'm going to. It'll be a great addition to my jewelry making. If you'd like, you can check out some of my jewelry on my profile. That's my all time favorite craft.

Great! I haven't done any craft fairs yet but have sold some of my pc beads used on the jewelry I make. I don't work with it as much as I used to since I started using crystal and glass beads. I really should get it all out again and do some sculpting. I really miss it. Thanks for your reply!

I have not yet, although it is on my list of things to do. It looks to have all kinds of uses, I am not very artsy, I can barely draw a stick person! But, I am going to look into doing the polymer clay. Thanks for the tips. Your sculptures are very adorable!

Those are great. I like working with polymer clay, it's fun and I've made a few cool Christmas gifts out of it. The best two were for my little sister and my brother in law. My little sister LOVES Aerosmith, and she loves "flamey" stuff, so I mixed red, yellow and gold to a nice flame-like swirl and carved out the Aerosmith logo from it for an ornament for her. For my brother in law, I did a star of life ornament.

Wow that is great work. I've played around with sculpting, you can guess that it is supposed to an Easter bunny but no way does it look real. I gave up because I couldn't get the clay to harden properly, at one temperature it was kind of rubbery. At a higher temperature it burned the clay and the figures all came out brown. (Sigh) Please post more photos of some of your other sculptures.

Thanks so much for the great compliment! In my profile there's a picture of a relief sculpture I did for my husband's guitar. I consider that my proudest piece of work in polymer clay so far. I did it all on glass first with a backing of liquid polymer clay so it sticks to the guitar like a window cling, no glue was used to stick it to the guitar. The only glue I needed was to put the pieces of the sculpture together, I had to break it up into a few pieces cause he wouldn't take the strings off! If you have a hard time curing your clay you might want to pick up an oven thermometer at the grocery store, they're cheap. Put it in next to your piece and keep a close eye on the temp and adjust accordingly. That's what I had to do. Neither of my ovens (gas and electric) keep an accurate temp. My electric is sometimes 40 degrees off. It's kind of a pain to have to sit and watch your clay cook but it's better than burning or undercooking all your hard work. Don't give up!! Thanks hon, :D

Hi elisa812, it really is a lot of fun to experiment with. It comes in so many colors you can make just about everything from jewelry to awesome works of art. If you decide to give it a try I, and I'm sure the other clayers would love to see what you come up with! Thanks for stopping by :D

Clay scuplture of Pope Paul - I love working with polymer clay and did this sculpture from a picture I saw of the Pope walking in his garden.
Oh, my gosh--another clay addict! I know this is an old discussion, but I just found it, so maybe I will revive it again. Sculpting is my favorite thing to do with clay. I like Premo the best. Actually, I liked the old, hard Fimo that cramped your hands to get it soft! But it held it's shape so well! I love to sculpt minature figurines. I liked my stuff until I attended a couple of workshops and saw some really good work! lol. I'm attaching a picture of a sculpture I did of Pope Paul.

I still have some of that old "hand killer" Fimo. I love the black especially. It comes out looking so smooth and polishes up so shiney! You did a great job on the Pope Paul sculpture! You have nothing to feel bad about. I know what you mean though. When I see some work by an exceptional sculptor I kind of shake my head and feel rather inadequate. But then again, they didn't get that good overnight, takes lots and lots of practice.. so I keep practicing!
