Price of stamps....up again???

I was listening to the radio on the way to preschool this morning and heard they want to raise the price of stamps from 39 cents to 42 cents.
Isn't the price of stamps getting ridiculous? I remember when they were 25 cents each and I'm sure more of you can remember when they were lower.
I understand why they have to go...gas prices but I can gaurantee you that if gas ever went back down, they wouldn't lower the price of the stamp.
They do want to introduce a stamp called the Forever Stamp and you don't have to buy the 2 or 3 cent stamps to make the difference up. Once you buy the stamp, you can use it even if the price goes up...the stamp will be worth 42 cents

Makes me very glad that I have only used around 4-5 stamps in the last 6 months! I refuse to mail anything that I can otherwise do without using mail. I pay all of my bills online. I communicate with out-of-town relatives online and by cell phone. They know not to expect letters from me. I do mail a birthday card to my two sons who live out of town. Other than birthday cards and extreme instances, I don't use the mail. Yet somehow my own mailbox is full....of CRAP...perhaps if they would do something about the junk mail....

Oh I know....maybe junk mail will slow down. I get so much junk that doesn't even have my name right on it.
I know the magazine companies were concerned that the price had gone up again.

I cam remember when postage was 3 cents.
The post office relies solely on the sales of stamps and services for ALL funding. They do not get one cent of our tax dollars.
They have how many vehicles???
Multiplied by how many miles driven every day ?????
That's a lotta gas.
What's the price at the pump where you live??????
I'm suprised it's only going up 2 cents.
I am not a postal worker.
I am a stamp collector.

Like I said, I DO understand why the price has to go up. Yes gas has gotten expensive. Trust me, I know...my husband drives 50 minutes one way in a pickup to work. Gas is a major part of my budget.
It will cost me almost 5.00 to send 11 bills out. Fortunately, I can pay these online now if I have too. My car payment, I can drive myself for cheaper to the bank where it is financed and pay it there.
Right now, I only buy stamps as I need them.
But I totally understand your point.

It's still considerably less expensive than most countries, by half or more.

It wasn't so long ago that they went up. They said that is not as much as the postal service really wanted. I do like the idea of the forever stamp. That way you don't have to worry about it. Everything goes up except our paychecks.

Yup, I like the idea of the forever stamp also. I read they may only sell that stamp in small quantities.
I know everything will be going up...deliveries and everything it just isn't stamps...but stamps just went up a year ago. I probably still have stamps from when they were 37 cents...lol

I truly believe that the USPS is prcing itself right out of business,
With more people opting for eft directly from the bank or paying online, the USPS keeps having to raise its prices to cover operating costs, whcih drives more people toward doing their coreespondences online.
The one thing USPS has going for it is its ability to overcomeweather issues. When we had blizzards here in December, I got packages sent via USPS right on time. UPS, however, took an extra 10 days to process everything. The items that were sent me through them were late.
Funny thing is, USPS delieverd my items that came from CHINA right on time...LOL The things that were delievered from within the United States via UPS were late! Go figure.

Oh they definitely get the job done. When we had bad weather this past month, they were out and get the mail out.
I just think the prices of stamps are getting ridiculously high!

I will be stocking up on forever stamps. I hate when stamps go up. I always buy a roll of 100 stamps and by the time I am running out sure enough they are going up. I hate filling evelopes with rows of 1 cent stamps. When will it end?

The same happens here. I used to buy the big rolls. But now I only buy as I need them. I had a set of stamps from when they were 37 cents and then they went to 39 cents and I just started using two stamps at once...they are finally gone.

Yes, they went up just about a year ago I think. I still have a set of stamps from the time before and to use them up I've just been using two stamps at a time.

Hmmm-the forever stamp? If that were the case then is the government planning on keeping stamps at the cost of that forever? Yes, you are very right, stamps are very ridiculous in price these days. I try to steer clear of sending mail as much as possible by sending e-mails and doing a lot of bill paying online. By the time I send out 4 bills, I am up over 1.50 in postage! Breaking the bank...and they want to raise it yet again...great.

Stamps may be going up but how many still use them? I rarely use them. If I want to send a letter I use the internet. It's much cheaper, being free. I can also hand deliver most things I would normally send out.

Kudos to you for being frugal! I, too, will share sentiments with others through email and in-person delivery. I reserve the in-person deliveries for birthdays to my elderly and lower-income friends (those who have no internet access!).

Oh no! Tell me it's not so! I go through so many stamps every time a new Tupperware catalog comes out, not to mention our fliers that also serve as invitations when I get parties, and I send out recipe postcards with discounts monthly, not to mention fliers at random time! I am going to go and have a good cry! But when I see your avatar I always brighten up!~Donna

Thanks for the compliment on my avatar. I keep thinking of getting a new one but I really like the bright colors of this one.

Yes I heard about this too. I am so tired of the stamps going up all the time. Its getting so ridiculous a person cant even write a letter no more. its cheaper using your phone, with all the free minutes you get.I do remember when the stamps were 1 cent...

Hello kims....
The Post Office is not a government funded entity, they get nothing from our tax dollars. They are dependent totally on the sales of stamps and services.

LOL, I heard about that too. I have questions about the forever stamp though, especially when I think of how many increases there have been in the last several years. It would be nice not to have to chase down the 1 & two cent stamps though. I wonder what the increase is going to do to priority mail this time. I remember when it started out, up to 2 pounds, in 2 to 3 days for $2.00. Now its over $4! Not complaining since I know they do a good job, but I pay everything I can online now.

I know...I think maybe my ebay days will be over soon. I usually use ebay to buy books but soon the shipping will be the cost of just buying a new book.

I can't believe this. I don't know how it is at your local post office, but the lines at mine are super long now that everyone has to have a passport to get to Mexico or Canada. I would think that with all this extra business that they wouldn't need to raise the cost of stamps.

The forever stamp definitely sounds like the way to go if continuing to use the postal service for sending mail. I use the post office rarely as I now depend more heavily on our technological advances (email, online banking, etc.)
Sending birthday cards through email, to me, is a lot cheaper than sending birthday cards through the mail. However, I do send my family and friends birthday/holiday cards if they don't have email. A book of ten stamps will last me months!
Increasing the postage rate seems to be a nearly annual move now by the USPS.

Wow it seems like the price went up not long ago! It won't effect me much, unless I'm mailing a package. I pay all my bills online for free so I don't buy a book of stamps very often.
