My baby is almost 8 months old and I give her formula all day and then a jar of stage 2 baby food at night. At this age, do you think that 1 jar of baby food a day is enough or should I be giving her more?? She's not a skinny baby so it's not like she looks like she should eat more, she's nice and plump but I wasn't sure if at this age she's supposed to be getting more than that.

Skinny or not. Your daughter isn't getting all the right nutritious she needs. She should be on more food now. Possibly even some tables foods. Formula is good. But she needs to be eating more food. That helps teach her to swallow better. I would start adding rice or oatmeal cereal to her diet.

I've tried giving her the different kinds of cereals and she doesn't like them but she likes just about all the baby foods. Her pediatrician told me I could start her on baby foods a while ago but never said how much and ever since she said to give her some I've just been giving her 1 different jar a day. Today I packed 2 jars with the baby sitter so I'll start giving her 2 jars.

Sweetheart, TWO jars isn't going to be enough. I know mothers that offer a variety of jars to their babies at ONE meal. She's HUNGRY. She will eat when she is hungry and stop when she's not. That may be 3 jars a day or 6 jars or 12. I'd assume she'd eat more right now because she's hungry and then when she gets filled up, she'll eat a bit less.

personally i would say talk to the childs doctor. I would think one small jar is not enough at this age. I gave small fruit jar with cereal then small bottle of milk. Lunch jar of food. Then bottle of milk. Snack bottle of milk. Dinner baby food meal and before bed bottle of milk. My kids are happy healthy and at the top of there glass. Not fat.

It really depends on your baby, some babies are intent to drink their formula and not eat much, but In my experience most babies eat more than that at that age. My five month old eats more than that now, but I have a pretty big boy. I guess the best suggestion is to talk to your pediatrician about it, he will be able to tell you how much formula your daughter should be drinking, because you don't want to give her too much formula where she doesnt want to eat solids afterwards. Also, maybe try giving her some formula, and half-way through, give her some baby food and then top her off with formula. That way you know she'll eat it and she's getting enough. But if she's not acting hungry, is having enought wet/soiled diapers and is growing consistently I wouldn't worry too much, but do talk to the doc. to find out how much formula she needs. Good luck!

Thanks. I was planning on calling her doctor here soon but just wanted some suggestions. She never acts like she's real hungry in between bottles so I thought I was giving her enough. I have been giving her some table food here and there every once in a while for example she's had some mashed potatoes, a pancake and a banana. But I'm a worry wart...I think she's going to choke and die with any big people food so it scares me and I only give it to her when I can sit and stare at her when she's eating.

When I went to a check up for my daughter when she was six months they said to feed her more baby food. I was doing the same as you.Now in the morning she gets her rice mixed with some apple jar food.During the day she gets about one bottle and right before bed she usually takes one.She is eight months now.

You might want to look into making your own baby food out of what you already cook. It's very easy and baby learns how to eat that way. At that age, DS took a bottle in the morning, one around mid afternoon, and one before bed. But he also ate 3 meals a day and a couple of small snacks. He didn't eat jarred foods, but one snack was around the same amount as a large baby food jar. You really ought to talk to your doctor about what a good diet is at this age.

Personally i would be giving her some baby food or mashed up table food at every meal. I dont think that one jar is enough myself. At least some more should be offered with the bottle at meal times.
Thats what i would be doing.

At 8 months old my daughter was eating 9 of those a day. She is now 16 months and eats about 6 a day along with normal food. You probably should give her more food so that she'll learn to like a variety of food and textures. You don't want to raise a picky eater.

I started my baby with rice cereal around 5 months. And then slowly worked up to more meals. I think by the time he was 9 months old he was eating 2 to 3 meals a day. Oatmeal mixed with baby fruit in it in the morning. Then the other two meals had both a fruit and a veggie.
We were working up to sippie cups with meals at 9 months.
Every baby is different and you know your baby better than the rest of us. Some people don't feed them anything until they are a year old....I couldn't ever wait that long...lol

i have to say that my son will be 9 months in a couple days and he hardly ever eats baby food he is just not interested in the rice cereal or anything close to it and my ped told me to put the cereal in his formula since that is all he wants that that works great, my son has other issues but for now when i eat real food i offer it to him so that he can get a little here and there good luck

Hi, just to add my thoughts. I don't think your baby is malnourished, or should be eating three meals a day. All babies are different, some require more food, some less, like adults. You know your baby's moods and needs better than anyone, and if she has regular health checks, her physical condition will be monitored for years to come. My daughter wasn't really interested in food till age three, and now she is a tall, healthy eight year old, with a big appetite. I would suggest that you give your baby a couple of small meals everday, just so she gets used to the flavor and texture of different foods. Now is a good time to start with vegetables, and avoid anything in a tin. Good luck, babies are lovely, and yours looks healthy and beautiful.

Its great that your baby seems healthy but by this age you should be offering him more foods. My baby is nine months old and he gets his rice cereal in the morning, either some baby food or fruit in the afternoon and at night he gets a jar of baby food but he still does nurse alot during the day. Just try different things. Sometimes your baby will like something one day and then like something another day.

My baby is almost 8 months too and she has 2 meals a day and bottles for the rest. She has cereal in the morning and I usually mix in 1/2 a jar of baby food fruit. She has bottles during the day, and then around supper time she has 1/2 a jar of baby food (meat with veggies) and the other 1/2 of the fruit from the morning that went into her cereal. It also depends on how hungry she is too because sometimes she will eat a whole jar of meat & veggies and still manage to polish off the rest of the fruit from what went in her cereal in the morning. If you really want the best opinion though, when you take baby in for the next check up talk to the doctor. I am only giving my advice and explaining what my baby eats, I am not a professional.

she's probably gaing weight because shes getting plenty formula however shes not getting the right amount of nutrients, she should be cutting back on the formula and having things such as cereal and atleast 2-3 jars of baby food a day basically one for each meal. is it thats shes a picky eater ? if so i would try to use some type of supplement for shes needs the nutrients in the fruits and veggies. good luck and she is a cutie :)

Hi rndistgg,
All babies are different but if you have concerns you should really only listen to your baby's doctor.
She sure looks well fed and what a georgous little angel.
Enjoy every second with her and don't worry too much.I have the feeling you are a great mom.
You will blink and she'll be off the school and the next blink and she'll be in college so enjoy enjoy.

Hi there,
Ok on the side of my formula tin it says what they should be having - now, my daughter is 9 months & it says on there she should be having 4 bottles of 240ml each (about 8oz per bottle) plus 3 meals.
I would suggest trying 3 meals a day - here's what i usually do but you can start with other things of course:-
My daughter loves toast for breakfast - with just butter or something like that, for lunch she usually has some fruit (try a slice of Orange - just 1 & see ho she goes) & for dinner she'll have whatever we're having - more often than not - mashed potato, pasta - we have even tried her on meat (little strips) & she happily sucks away at them.
I think if she's not hungry all the time then she's probably ok but yeah, you shoud probably be introducing finger foods that she can munch on herself!
Also, 2 minute noodles are easy for them to eat & digest so you could try that too!

my baby is now 13 months old.when she was 8 months i used to feed her 2 1/2 bottles of 2nd food of different varieites like fruits, vegetables and pudding.further inbetween i will be giving her cereal 2 times a day either rice or mixed cereal. My daughter too little bit less weight when compare to other babies inspite of my above feeding pattern. So i think the physique doen't depend on the amount of feeding.but i think you should give your baby more than one jar.It has been stated in the gerber site that they should be given 5 servings a day.

Yes your daughter need more foods try her on new things one a week or so to get her eating more. and so incase she is allergic to anything you will have plenty of time to be sure and she wont be trying so many things at once that you dont know which one she is allergic to kwim? she needs like 3 jars at least throughout the day. try smal bit size fruits that she can pick up herself..even a banana is great my kids have at least a banana and or apple and lots of fruit everyday. i have a 1 yr old an a 4 yr old. just get her trying new stuff.

I think that your child is old enought o eat 3 meals a day cereal with fruit for breakfast then vegetable and friut for lunch and then the same fot inner and a bottol of milk between breakfast and lunch and a bottol of milk between lunch and dinner she will more than likely loose that fattyness when she gets up to walking and crawling around

I think that you should also be giving here a serving of baby food in the morning and an hour or so before bed maybe after her bath at night! You can also start to substitue with bananas and potatoes and stuff as she is ready for something new also!

One factor will be how much formula she is getting, it's pretty rich stuff and it is fortified. She should probably be eating solids with most meals by this stage, if only to get her digestion working and used to different types of nutrition.
Having said that, every baby is different! And I agree with some of the other posters that a hungry baby will cry, so if she's happy and healthy and not lethargic, then just try lots of different stuff. Best advice I've read is that anything you can't eat by easily squishing between your tongue and the roof of your mouth is going to be tricky to eat with no teeth :o).
