How much do you spend on a birthday gift?

I am more wondering for kids that you dont even know. Like when you child gets invited to a party from someone in his class. You dont know the child nor do you know the parents. I spend like $20.00 on a gift plus the cost in getting wrapping paper and a card. I have no clue if that is to much or to little to be spending. I ask this beacuse my mother in law just about died when I told her how much I spent on a gift for a birthday. I thought I spent the average amount but now I am wondering.
Thanks
Denyel

I try to keep it under 20 dollers for a gift. Something relativly inexpensive and then giftwrapping it. For under 20-25 dollers.
I dont think its too much at all. Sometimes my mom spends more then that for my sisters friends.
A good way to stock up, is aroudn christmas when they have all those little toys go on sale hehe, buy a bunch and pick from those for all those gift times.
My sister is 10 and some of her friends are as old as 13, so we look for those little body and bath gift sets, lotions with body wash and bubble bath, for around 5 dollers each, my mom will buy 10-20 of them for girls throughout the year.

Nope. Ten bucks is my limit. If my child wants to buy something more than they pay with their own money. But my children (aged 10 and 13) are pretty agreeable to the $10 limit. They get invited to a lot of birthday parties. I could not afford to spend $20 every time they went to a party. I don't care how much the parent has put into the party; it was their choice to do so.

I wouldn't spend no more than 10.00, 15.00 being the most...Plus depending on who it is as well...If it's my best friend children b-day I could see 15.00. Or someone my son plays with all the time I can see it..other than that 10.00 tops...lol

On the occasion of my birthday I spend around Rs 2500 with my friends partying the whole day. But the money is not of my own I get it from my parents. That day I go to one of the best hotels of the city with my best friends.

I don't think it should really matter how much you spend... and actually, unless it was a child I knew well, like the child of one of my friends, I probably wouldn't want to spend $20. Maybe $10. You can get a pretty nice kids' toy for $10 at Wal-Mart or Target, and it doesn't have to be something big... a lot of kids really love stuff from that aisle of weird toys like viewmasters and silly putty and eggs that hatch into sponges.

WE're not financially blessed so I make it a point to budget our money when it comes to giving gifts. The price range normally falls between Php100-500, as long as we know the child will enjoy the gift there is no need to spend thousands on something he/she might break after a few days.

My children are all grown up now, but my son has twin boys and he has to get two gifts, because when there is a birthday party both are invited. He usually spends 20:00 dollars on two gifts.

Well for me it sorta all depends on the person. If it's a friend and it's his Birthday, i'd go with maximum 20$. If it's my family it's maximum 50$. Because well i don't really care about the price really. It's more of, will he like it. will he enjoy it... I don't really care most of the time about how much a spend... Sometimes i even go overboard and buy something a tad more expensive.

I think $20 is fine. I personally spend about $25 for birthday gifts (more for family members) and that does not count wrapping or shipping. I really think the gift should be more about the thought and less about how much you spent. This is why I hate giving gift certificates so much. Also, since this for a child that you don't know, I think it is fine to spend $20.

Depends on:
* statices (level of life).
* His/her attitudes (may be the best for him/her a plan
or bike or simple toy).
cause may be the gift costs alot but doesn't match with his/her attitudes on contract may be a gift with low cost be the best .
I know that it's diffcult to determine that but I'm talking about the ideal case.

I think your amount is average and okay for your child. But it can be between $10 to $15.As your child is only attending the party and you have no relations with them. What you spend now later will become a habbit for your child and he will not except less so try from now.Money is not for wastage.Party is for enjoyment not for gifts.

Ah pretty much around say Rs.100(my currency) for a birthday gift. I always buy the gift in that amount and having to spend for more than two birthdays a month i also have to think of the budget that i can spend on.
According to me, it is not the amount you spend but the importance of the gift and the love with which the person would feel happy.

I think $20.00 i sa lot to spend on a child you don't know. I try to spend about $15, including gift bag and card (which I get at the dollar store). But then for good friends of my children, I spend $25 to $30.

I spend a handsome amount of money on Birthday gifts. Also, throughout my growing years, my parents never discouraged me to spend for lovely Birthday gifts. It feels good to wrap up gifts in excitingly colourful papers. I remember when I was a child, I and my sister used to spend hours in decorating and wrapping birthday gifts, be it whoever's birthday. It's afterall a nice feeling. When I see the person, taking the finely wrapped and decorated gift from my hand, with a sparkle in his/her eyes, that gives me a beautiful satisfaction. Thus I never ever think of saving money on birthday gifts.

I spend anywhere from 10-20 dollars depending on how much we know the person who is having the party. Sometimes we get invited to parties where we really do know the person and in that case we go with the 10 dollar gift. If its someone we know or a family member we stick to around 20 dollars.
I have also been making my own cards on the computer which saves us alot of money.
