What causes a person to be left handed or right handed? I have always been right handed and so has my husband. Both of our kids are lefties. When my son was little, I tried to get him to hold the fork or spoon or crayon with his right, but he just couldn't do it. So, I finally gave up and let him "be who is". When my daughter came along, I decided to not even try to change her. Whatever hand she favored, was what I would encourage. Well, now she is a leftie.
What causes this? Anyone know? Maybe becasue one side of your brain is more active than the other?

I don't know what it's about and it's an interresting topic, especially for me since I'm a leftie :) I would think that creative ppl tend to be lefties, but I'm in a class for graphic designers and we are only two lefties in the class.. that's strange in that case. Also, ALL my exboyfriends for longer relationships have been lefties, one was ambidextrous which my husband also is! But I don't know why I tend to have relationships with lefties!

I'm not very sure about this kind of topic, but I am left handed and I know that I use my right brain a lot. Your right brain has the side of creativity and arts but your left brain has logic, putting things in sequence and a few more.

I have often wondered this myself. I used to think that a child would use the same hand that they saw a parent use but I have found out that this is not necessarily the case. Many left handed people have parents who are both right handed. Weird. I will be anxious to see what others have to say on this subject also.

Both my parents were left handed when they started at school. Way back over 60 years ago it wasn't acceptable rhat children should write with their left hand, so both my parents had it knocked out of them at a very early age. My father is now in his late 70's, he still writes with his right hand, but if he deaws a picture, he has to use his left hand.
I am very left handed, I often wonder if I got the trait from my parents, my younger brother though is very right handed, go figure.

I've always heard that it is genetic. Are any of the kids' grandparents left handed? I'm sure it's just like hair color or eye color and can show up unexpectedly. Supposedly left handed people are more creative than right handed people. The right side of the brain is the creative side, but everyone uses both sides of their brains. There have been a few studies that showed that a left handed person's brain is often able to compute back and forth from hemisphere to hemisphere faster than a right handed person, though.
One article that I read about left handed vs right handed said that left handed people are disproportionately high or low on IQ tests. There's some research that suggests some people are left handed because of something that goes wrong before they are born. They will usually have a slightly lower IQ than average, or a learning disability of some kind. The study suggested that this is the reason that a disproportionate number of dyslexic people are left handed. However, if babies are born without that defect, and still become left handed, their IQ will on average, be a little bit higher.
Left handed people make up approximately 12-13% of the population. However, in groups like Mensa, where a very high IQ is required for membership, approximately 20% are left handed.
I've always been left handed and I've never any problems using most things that are designed for right handed people. The only thing I have any problems with is a manual can opener. It's nearly impossible for me to use one, I guess because I try to use it backward because my left hand is so dominant. Me and my sister (who is also left handed) have never been able to use them. Neither of us has ever had any problems with using right handed scissors, though. And I've always heard how important it is to use left handed scissors! I just use right handed ones in my left hand. I even cut hair for a living and buy right handed shears.

Both my parents are left handed but none of us(kids) are left handed. I don't know the actual cause of these but i got some freinds who are leftie and had got talents in good handwriting, some are good in arts while some can play guitar better than the rightie's etc.

I think that it's just nature. Some people are white while some are black. Some people are smart while others are not so smart. So the same thing applies with the hand thing. Some people are right handed and some are left handed. But I bet that the number of right handed people are more than the number of left handed people. I also heard somewhere that if the right side of our brain functions more then we are left handed and vice versa. Nature is really mysterious.

Usually one side of the brain and thus the body is dominant in a person. If the right side of the brain is more dominant then a person is left handed, yes it's backwards. That's why left handed people are always in their right minds :)
I'm glad to hear you didn't try to change him. As someone who was forced to become a righty I know how frustrating it can be. I do many things with both hands now although soem things are still more one side or the other. Forcing a child to become a right hand was something that was done for many years, it was thought that using the left hand led to the devil. I don't say I agree with that belief it's just one of many people used to force babies to be right handed. It can cause problems with development. It is best to let the child be true to themselves and be left or right as they were meant to be.

that's what i'm thinking also being right or left handed is a brain matter or i may sometimes think to be genetic also . . . . 'coz in our family my father works well with his left but in eating or writing is for his right and that is also what's in my practice now. i do all the things like cooking , holding knife , or having my full strenght in my left also but i do use my right hand to write & do some other things also.
anyways , , as long as my brain & hands work well then i won't keep myself seeking the reasons on this :)

I'm not in the medical line and haven't done any research about it but my suggestion's this: instead of feeling a little bad about the situation, why not teach them to combine the two i.e instead of totally leaving out the left hand which appears to be the default active member, this way, they become ambidexterous or whatever it is they call it. A lecuter of mine's like that, he uses his left and right hands in equal strengths. Said his parents made that possible through practice.

My ex-husband was and I am left handed. Our son is right handed, but his handwriting matches his father's so closely! I've always wondered how this can be, due to the different hands.
My ex-husband's mother also tried to change his hand preference, even until he was in early grade school. No success. Maybe that's what was wrong with him, haha.

As I read some of the responses, I remember my nephew who's left handed since birth. But when he started studying, he was taught of writing in right hand, and he learned it well. I guess nothing is wrong with this, he even doing very well in school. He is a smart boy. His father, my brother uses his both hand very well (right hand for writing and left hand for eating). Anyways, that's a nice topic to research and know the real reason why there is left handed and right handed person.

I'm not exactly sure what it is that causes you to be one hand over another. It might be the strength in the dominant hand. I know my son has a lot more strength in his right hand than his left so he has chosen that one. My youngest uses both still so it will be interesting to see which way he goes. I'm left handed. No one ever tried to change it. It's hard being in a right handed world though. Not many left handed desks. I cut with my right hand b/c there were never any left handed scissors and if there were they were crappy. I do a lot with my right hand b/c I had to.

I think its more of as you said... like one side of brain has a more control over the other... it means for your kids right side of their brain will be more active... with this they will be less of an emotional person... they will try to be more calculative and less imaginative... they will like to live on realistic terms than anything else...i dont think there should be any concern... in current world we do like that our kids should be more lefty than righty
