Can you believe that in south-central Kentucky a newborn was found in a shoebox? The 5 pound infant was wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in a shoebox and left outside a duplex. Two children found the shoebox and alerted their parents. The baby's body temperature was 85 degrees when found. He is recovering in an area hospital. What are your thoughts?

This isn't the first time I've heard a story of this nature. I once saw segment on "Unsolved Mysteries" where a woman on a train just wrapped up her baby girl, left her on the seat and then just solemn walked out. Luckily the girl was adopted and raised by a very good family. But when she grew up, she wanted to meet her birth mother - which was why they broadcasted her story on their program. It struck me as kind of odd to want to meet face to face with the woman who abandoned you as an infant... I guess she was was just keen on giving the birth mother the benefit of the doubt...
In any case, whoever did this to the poor child had obviously lost his or her mind, not only in their abandonment of the child, but also doing something so potentially hazardous as wrapping the baby up in a plastic bag. Naturally I hope the baby makes a complete recovery and that s/he is able to grow up in a loving family. Even so, nothing can take away the fact that they are going to have to learn about the details of their birth sooner or later which could have some haunting emotional effects. I definitely hope it all works out for the better. And yes, I believe whoever did this needs to be punished. This is a highly unforgiveable thing to do.

Oh my gosh! Not only did they leave a newborn in the shoebox...but wrapped in a plastic bag! How lucky that the baby was found alive and not suffocated! People like that shouldn't be allowed to have children! LOL! As soon as I typed that, I had to laugh! what a silly thing to say! But boy oh boy...they should have to pay big consequences for doing that!

I cannot comprehend such behavior. It is one thing to get pregnant and not want the child, but to try to abondon and kill your own child? There is no excuse. The child could have been wrapped in a blanket and left at a hospital, if the mother did not want it. When she is found, she should go to jail for attempted murder. That poor unloved child, it is so sad, I cannot find the words that I feel to express the sorrow for it.

i just do not understand why people keep doing this. they have a no questions asked policy now in place for people who do not want their neworns to drop them off at a hospital, police station, or fire station and nothing will be said or done to the parents as long as the baby is fine. But NOOOOOOO people still insist on trying to kill these inncoent babies.

My thoughts? Immediate outrage! There are some sick and twisted individuals in the world! How could someone actually do this to a little sweet baby? Was the plastic over the baby's head? There are so many people that want and can't have babies, and whoever did this should be severely punished. I am very happy to hear that the baby was alive.

I'm so glad that you posted quickly. I forgot to put the link to the story! Yes, I am outraged too. So far they have no leads in the case. They have taken DNA samples from the baby.
Here is the link to the story:

That is so sad! Why couldn't the parents drop the baby off at a hospital, church, anyone for heaven's sake. That's a life, doing that is attempted murder. I just get sick everytime I hear something like that. Where is this mothers maternal instinct? I can't imagine carrying a child for 9 months and treating it like trash after giving birth.

Yes, especially since in Kentucky we have a law that protects those who want to just drop the baby off at a safe place. As long as the baby has not been abused, the parents are free to give it up with no consequences.

That poor baby. I dont understand how people can allow them selves to get pregnant, then go through the pregnancy and not make arrangements for the child to be adopted if they dont want it. It is stories like this that really make me angry and not watch the news.

That is awful. I hope they find out who did this. I guess the only good news about this all, is that the baby is recovering. I hope he recovers well and they can place him in a wonderful home.
I don't know why people do this. Don't they have 'Safe Places' in Kentucky? Now a days they have places where a mother can drop her baby off at a store or a police station, hospital or any place and she can walk away and not have any problems. They did this to stop mothers from just throwing their babies away and that other awful stuff.
I just wish we could stop all this. How hard is it to just drop a baby off at one of these places or something like that? It seems it took more time to put the baby in the shoebox.. awful! Makes me angry.

Ughh that is sickening! Why do people do that? Did you know you can take your child to the police station saying you don't want them, no questions asked, and they will take the child? Why don't people do something like that...or if they can't handle the child do something about it...but don't try to kill it! Ahh that makes me so sad. I assume the newborn was born at the house and then they decided to just get rid of it. I pray and hope that the baby recovers and goes on to live a good life.

My heart aches when I hear stories like this. To think that someone was so desperate to hide a pregnancy/baby that they would go to this extreme. So many famlies would have loved to adopt this precious gift from God and give it a loving home. I hope they find the mother and she receives medical treatment and mental health counseling. I hope it was not an intentional act of crime, trying to get rid of the baby. Thank God those kids found the baby.

People have no excuse doing something like that, there are so many people that would love to adopt that baby because they can't have kids themselves. I just don't understand how anyone could actually do that to a baby. I am so glad to hear that he is ok, but it could have been a completely different story if someone didn't find him quick enough. It makes me so angry to hear that people can be so cruel. I hope they find who did it and lock them up for it, I think it is attempted murder.

My first reaction is complete shock the anger and disgust that someone could do this to a helpless baby. There's lot of options for people that don' think they can raise a baby. What in the world are some people thinking? (obviously they're not thinking) And how could anyone possibly live with themselves after doing such a horrible thing?!

This is insane! How could someone possibly do this. There are so many options out there that could provide this child with a safe loving home if not wanted by the birth mother. How can you sleep at night knowing that you did this to a human life...a human that you created. GRRR..:s

that was horrible, and the mother should be punished for what she has done to a helpless baby.
my heart bleeds for that innocent one.
and i do get upset of those who are capable of doing that to a very precious one.
i consider babies as precious because i believe that they are gift from god.
if you do that to your baby, you intensionally trying to kill and throw your gift.

I've heard a lot of stories about abandoned kids and infants. Most of them were thrown away by their mothers as if they were just garbage. I am outraged and I pity those children. There are some people who are trying their best to have a child and yet those who have one, don't want him or her at all. The part that their parents don't like them is fine but to kill them is a crime. It was never the child's fault to be here in the first place. The parents should have been more careful with regards to having a baby. They are old enough to know the consequences of their actions...*SIGH* ^^

That is just so sad, unfortunately it happens alot more than we think. The strange thing is that he was still alive after beeing wrapped in plastic, I mean that hedidn´t choke!
I really hope that they will find the birth-mother and find out what caused her to do this.
usually it is depression, a very yung mother who has hidden the pregnancy or didn´t know about it and has went into chock and acted in pure panic. that still doesn´t make it right - however there can be a whole lot to the story, and the "mother" might also need help!

After reading this I have a lot of conflicting emotions and thoughts.
I feel bad for the baby because nobody deserves to be abandoned, but I can't find it in my heart to say anything bad against the mother, because we don't know her circumstances.
We don't know if she was hiding the pregnancy from her family, we don't know if she was a teenager, we don't know if it was the result of a rape.
There are so many questions that are unanswered. I hope the mother is okay. She may need medical attention if she gave birth somewhere on her own as the report seems to indicate.
