With the recent reports about the trouble in the stock market in the past day or so I started to think about about the notion that "money is the root of all evil"
Money is a powerful force in today's world and is a commodity that some people will do anything to attain (Enron
comes to mind). I have my own opinions but I would love to hear what you think about money..is it the root of all evil in your eyes?

I have heard from a reliable source that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. My grandmother used to say money wont make you happy but you can be miserable in comfort.

Amen!! I had that drilled into me in my youth...the love of money is the root of all evil. I was hoping that someone else had the same lesson about money taught to them.

Very good point. The misuse of money starts in the mind of the person who wants it or has it. Thanks for your response-sorry about the typo in the heading-it should be "Do you believe it is"

definitely it is... it is even stated in the Bible... "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." (1 Timothy 6:9-10)... and these verses are so true and reflected in what our society had become now compare to in the past...

I love this scripture passage. You take today's headlines and reference this scripture as an explanation for all the
corporate corruption, crime and focus on making money in our culture today. it makes so much sense.

I do not believe money is the root of all evil. Money is used to do good as well as to do bad. If money was taken out of the picture and replaced with something else you would still have the same problem. People are the problem, their lack of discipline and self control, their desire to have what they want no matter what the cost.

I like the point you made..people become so blinded by money you could replace it with something else and people who are not disciplined would just be focused on obtaining the "new currency" no matter the cost.

it's really odd to realise that this "root of all evil" is actually your way of living. it's true..because of money people become enemies from friends, they hunt for every opportunity to win and survive. it's a really tough reality nowadays because everything in this world is based on money.i agree with this saying but i also realise i can't live without money..no one can. there is another saying in my country... i don't really know how to translate it exactly... it's: "It's bad with the bad but worse without it" so money IS the root of all evil ("the devil's eye" in my country :) ) but it's something we will always depend on.

Money is not the root of all evil. The love of money is. Jesus teaches in the Bible that we are to share whatever wealth we have with the poor and needy. He also tells the parable of the servants who were each given an amount of money to care for while the master was away. The one who did not try to increase the amount he had been given was rebuked and the ones who had invested and gained more were praised.
We are not to gain money just to pile up money. If money is used in the right way, it becomes a good thing.

I hate money...or should I say I hate the negative way money can change people? In alot of ways I believe it is the root of all evil, because too many people weight worth of a person by the amount of money the person has. I hate that. And I also hate when someone gets a large amount of money & then so-called friends all of a sudden surface from out of the blue.

many people use this quote imagining they are quoting scripture they are wrong money in and of itself is not eviland in this world it is a nececaty of life however loving money over everything else(greed!) is the evil the correct quore is the "love" of money !
1 Timothy 6:10. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Most people misquote that saying. It comes from the bible. Jesus said that, "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil." I do not think that you can argue with that. It is not money itself that causes the evil but people's desire to acquire it that leads to trouble.

money is not the root of all evil. Love of money is the root of all evil. There is a difference. Unfortunatly in our world money is a need. Poeple who have it want more because they love it. And people who don't have money desire it, and once they get it if they get it they want more. It's a vicouse cycle we ride on when it comes to money. It would be nice to go back to barter and trade. At this point in my life money is not the root of all evil. It's people and their love for it and how the attain it.

Actually, some religous groups twisted that bible quote to make it look like that. Actually, it fully says "The love of money is the root of all evil", such as greed. This is why society and religious organizations in the past and present keep trying to glorify and praise poverty, to try to criminalize and make wealth and riches evil or a sin, and that poverty is godly and holy. THAT'S NOTHING BUT RUBBISH!

money itself is neither good nor bad. i've read some of the other responses stating that it's the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil and i just have to repeat it on my own response because i believe it's true. we need money to lead a better, more comfortable life. it's not evil so we shouldn't treat it as an enemy. but we shouldn't get obsessed with it either to a point where it's all we ever think about and we get sick worrying about it.

At least is the root of most of the evil in our world today.
All the war that we have now is due to the need of power and money.
But this is a problem of the human nature. All over the history, Man have fight for power and money, and I believe that this need for power will conduct us to our doom.

Well I would agree somewhat. Money is a little too specific though. Greed is the true root of all evil and I think greed goes for several things, not just money. People can be greedy for many things, power, status, money, possessions etc.
