Which is better Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?

I have read the full series of both books and i find them both to be interesting. Movie-wise i think that these two are in different leagues. Lord of the Rings in my opinion has better actors(actresses), better action scenes, and just more well rounded. Yet when it comes to the books they are in a different league too. The Harry Potter books give me more of a I-need-to-finish-this-chapter-before-3-in-the-morning-cuz-i-have-to-go-to-school-at-seven feeling when compared to the Lord of the Rings books. Whenever i read the Lord of the Rings books i normally fall asleep during or just lose interest in like 10 minutes. What do you think?

Hi Stickricky, I am with you Though both the books are interesting, Rowling's I like the best. The way she describes every thing, her plotting things, very bite nail bits. Just can't leave the book until u finish. Enjoy every thing, HP has humour, thrill, everything is in exact amount. Totally the book is very well cooked food. Just right, she made even the witchcraft a noble job. Though I am an Indian, I felt like I am with HP, as if I adopted the culture. Actually I am mad after the book, you should believe even now I read and re-read the books from 1st one to the sixth one, and now I am very eager to get the seventh one. Ha...at last there is some place where I can share my feelings about HP.

I couldn't even get into the first Harry Potter book; the writing was just too juvenile for me. Tolkien has Rowling beat in every artistic way, shape, and form.

well i'm guessing you're a bit older than me so you can appreciate that kind of writing. personally i think there is just too much detail in Tolkiens writing. But yes he is still a brilliant author

I can appreciate that, but to be fair, Rowling was writing for a different audience. Rowling's books are written for young adults. Tolkien's are written with a more mature audience in mind. As Rowling's characters have grown up, so has the language in her writing. I think it was a conscious, artistic decision on her part that deserves some merit. I love both story lines, so much, and I think they're both wonderfully written. They're in entirely different leagues, for a million reasons. But yes, Harry Potter is the more juvenile of the two. ;)

The lord of the rings book do have quite a few very very slow moving parts. It's got a lot of extra detail that after your a few hundred pages into the books your like dang that's to much. The harry potter books never caught my attention, 69 pages (yes 69) through the first book I decided to return it. The movies, I would say lord of the rings was way better. They had a better written story, better plot, and they acted it out the best, to amaze us most. The harry potter movies there seems to be a lot of bad acting. I guess that's what you get when you use magic that they have to add effects for, and when you use young unproffesional kids as your stars.

hmm i like harry potter better because lord of the rings is complicated for me. i know lord of the rings is much cooler but i like harry potter because its for kids and stuff. the lord of the ring movies are really good though, like harry potter movies. one difference is that the lord of the ring movies are better than book and the harry potter books are better than movies. hmm...its visa versa. i think jrr tolkien and jk rowling are really good authors of fantasy. i dont know what to expect from the 7th harry potter, i hope there are more deaths and grievances because almost all of the harry potter books are "happy happy happy" and id like some really suspense and gore lol. the lord of the ring has some of this. overall i guess harry potter and lord of the rings is good, even though i havent read lord of the ring books and i have read harry potter lol.

I love both the Harry Potter and the Lord of the Ring films,, both are just as good as each other, Even the books are brilliant too! Both have some great content and have encouraged young people to pick up books and read which has to be brilliant, as before those a lot of kids have read less and less as they found books boring... This is what I have found through talking to the kids at a youth group I help with. Lynn-Marie

I love Harry Potter books, most of the HP books I've read in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down. I tried reading Lord of the Rings once but I guess it was just too "artistic" for me, i kept dozing off every 10 minutes or so. I prefer my books to be easy to read so that I can enjoy it more. I don't care about the book being artistic as long as I'm enjoying it. I've watched both movies, too and I loved both of them...

I read Lord of the Rings back in my early 20's, I've never felt the need to read it again. I've got the Harry Potter books both on tape and as books. I've listened to them more than once. I've also been willing to rewatch the movies. I think the LOR movies were wonderful, and I'm glad they were as faithful to the books as they could be. They were beautifully filmed, but I just find the Harry Potter books/movies more fun.

I would have to say Harry Potter. I fall asleep when I try to watch the Lord of The Rings. Harry Potter is suspenseful and has more of a storyline than something that is based on a story about some ring. I've never actually read the Lord of The Rings though so I can't say too much about it.

I would prefer Harry Potter over the Lord of the Rings any day. Lord of the Rings is too fantastic to be true. Harry Potter, even with all the magic happening in it. I read Lord of the Rings only after watching the movie even though I had bought the book long before that. I couldnt summon enough patience to read it. But Harry Potter, I rarely can hold myself from reading it.
