That sounds like a typical office visit. We actually spend more time waiting that getting treated...It s that 20 minute wait in the examining room that I hate...I do not understand why they don't just leave you in the waiting room until the doctor is ready to see you...Yes there is a lot wrong with this picture but as long as i can remember thats always the way doctors visits have always been..I know my Mom used to take me to our family doctor when I was a kid and we waited in the waiting room 3 or 4 hours every time, but the doctor would always took you to his office and talked for an hour....I hated to go because of that but i was a child..

yeah it was really disgusting sometimes, you have many more questions but it seems that the doctor is very busy that he can only make a one hour talk to you.. you have waited thirsty and tired outside for many hours and still they will just entertain you in minutes.. good if the doctor is there.. i experienced in a government hospital, we were told for the schedule of my brother's re-check up of his left sprained leg at 9am.. so we were there at 8:15 hoping that the doctor is too early also and have some business early.. unfortunately, he is not there so the person in charge told us to wait for some minutres.. it was then 11:20 but the doctor is still did not arrive.. we waited more minutes and thanks god he fianally arrive.. what a heck he was there not to do the check up but to say that he is also sicked.!!!! WAAHHHHHHH.. We went home badtrip.. He spoiled our day

Oh your poor mother - I'm complaining about less than two hours with a teenager. I did let the doctor know I wasn't real happy though. When he came in the room he asked my son and I both how we were doing. When he asked me I said "What do you think being shut up in this room with him this long. Oh by the way he has inspected every piece of equipment in here while we were waiting." I've known this doctor for 14 years he knows my son and knows me - he knew I wasn't happy. I did say it nicely though and smiled while I was saying it.

My doctor visits are about the same. A whole lot of time waiting and barely even 10 minutes with an actual doctor and maybe another 10 minutes with a nurse. Thats why I don't really trust the doctor and don't like to go. I have to pay 20 bucks to get him to prescribe me some medicine that I probably don't even need. My doctor also tends to think that pain pills are the answer to everything and I don't agree.

Oh I went through all of this to be told "he'll be fine it's just a cold" - the kid has been coughing day and night for the last 2 days. It's really bad I can't get him to go to school when he feels good but now because the doctor says "he's ok" I have to fight to get him to go tomorrow - doctor would only write him an excuse for the doctor's visit today.

As you know we have a pretty good in Canada for paying for medical care but we also have long waits. Doctors don't get paid enough for the services they render, so they over book. My phychriast is the only doctor that does not overbook. One appointment he kept me waiting because of a phone call he received and he apologized to me for being late. That is the only time a doctor apologized to me for using my valuable time up. Yes they may have gone to school and got big degrees but there is no excuse for the waits.

Well that's nice to know, I've always wondered how the care in Canada was - I've heard pros and cons. I don't think I've ever had a doctor apologize - a nurse now and then but never a doctor. LOL when we were pulling out of the parking lot afterwards my son spotted the fanciest most expensive car in the lot and said, "I'll bet that's the doctor's car". Sure he was right, yes they work very hard at schooling and all but I do think they need a class on "common curtesy"

I agree with you, doctors often over book to make more money. I don't think they realize it costs us as patients money to,time off work for the appointment or being late back to work if you scheduled yourself on your lunch. To see our family doctor for anything it is an 8 week wait, if were sick with a sore throat or ear infection we go to a walk-in-clinic where you can be seen the day of. Our health care I think is in a shambles when it comes to scheduling.

I had to laugh reading this. I could feel your impatience. LOL I hate going to the dr. It is an all day event around here. They think our time is not valuable but their time is like gold. LOL

Oh you want to laugh? That was after I had to scrape a half inch of ice off the van, drive 10 miles on icey roads in rainy sleet, and for that 20 minutes of professional care I was away from myLot for almost 4 hours- no writing assignment right now I could have been having fun.

You poor darling. such a stressful time for you. I don'yt have a doctor. We have a shortage and they are not taking new patients. I got in to see a newly arrived Indian doctor when our district nurse pushed some buttons because she was concerned about my high blood pressure. After driving 60klms, finding the clinic, filling out the registration forms and waiting with people who were coughing their lungs out and not using a hanky or covering their mouth, I was shown into his room. He could barely understand me. He gave me a printed form about diet and said "Lose 5-10kg and come back in 4 weeks. I'm sure my BP dropped because I was in shock and numb and then quite upset. I haven't been back and I've gained another 2kg.

I just went to a doctor and when I wanted to ask some questions that the doctor did not feel were relavent to the visit I was told that they had only scheduled me for a 15 min office visit at the most, and if I had any other medical concerns I would have to make another appointment because there were other patients waiting. I had already waited over an hour in the exam room to even see the doctor. and no one told me I was only scheduled for just a 15 min office visit. I assumed when you make a sick appointment you could ask about any problems that you were having, just in case any other problem may be connected to anything else. So everything could be fixed at once not just have to keep coming back and keep running up more bills. I hate going to doctors.

Oh now that is just not right, if you have questions they should answer you then not make you come back - after all those people in the waiting room already know their going to be waiting for an hour or more anyway, what's 5 more minutes... I must say I have never had a doctor do that.

I had a similar experience yesterday! I had surgery a month ago to remove endometriosis, and yesterday was my post-op appointment. I got there at 10:25 for a 10:30 appointment, someone came to take my vitals at 10:45, I waited another 15 minutes, got into the room, waited another 20 minutes, the doctor came in and shook my hand, left for another 20 minutes, examined me for maybe two minutes during which time I felt like I didn't get to ask him anything at all and then left. I have seen him many other times, though, so I know that he is a wonderful doctor and a very nice man. He just must have been so rushed! I do have a new respect for doctors, however. My boyfriend recently started practicing dentistry and there are so many days when employees don't show up and the whole staff is behind schedule all day. Additionally, he has several patients every day who are running late...that messes up the whole schedule. Maybe that's the key! We should all just make sure we always show up on time!

Like everyone has said. You are going to have to wait where ever you go and i'm not sticking up for the doctors but they are really busy, they try to overbook their schedules and sometimes they don't even see the schedule and just know what time they start and end, they may be short staffed that day,and their may be more than one doctor in that office and they have to share exam rooms. So there are alot of scenerios to the situation.

Oh go ahead and stick up for them - my step-father is a retired doctor himself. The joke for years was we could never get a picture of him without a phone in his hand. Didn't matter what else was going on his patients came first. I'm very proud of him for that. When he had his practice it wasn't unusual for one of the girls in the office to call and say "the doctor is running behind an hour (or two, or three) and give the option of coming in later and waiting or reschedualling the appointment. The first couple times this happened I thought it was just because of our relationship but I found out they did that for all appointments - I got that from 2 people I worked with that were patients. Everyone loved him and were disappointed when he sold his practice. He retired and then him and my mom (an RN) went to Bolivia and did medical missionary work there for 5 years, came back with 2 new little sisters for me, they adopted 2 orphaned girls from Bolivia.

When I go to see the doctor, it normally takes me at least three hours. I always make sure I have brought a book to read. Today I had to go back for my semianual blood tests to see if the cancer has returned (Yuk!). I always dread these blood tests. Please pray for me.

Sometimes I take crochetting but when taking kids I can't read - one sentence and they'd be into something or asking questions. The one today, my youngest, I don't even bother with crochetting because I have to keep an eye on him every second we're in the examining room - he was making helicopters out of paper cup, paper clip, tonge depresser, and gause pad. He tested all the examining tools including figureing out he could take some apart. He then was pretending he was a helicopter on the doctor's swivel chair. He did make me laugh one time - he imitated the doctor checking the limph nodes - when the doctor actually did it I started busting up laughing.

My visits to doctors are very rare, I just hate doctors and do anything to avoid them :) also the waiting time is like ages for me and it's very hard to take, I really don't see doctors unless I'm very ill, some kind of phobia I guess :)

I think it's ridiculous. But, it's how things have gotten to be. Honestly, be thankful that you didn't have a longer wait. Infact, with as bad as it has gotten around here, you should be glad that you even got into the doctor's office. Unfortunately, most doctors don't seem concerned with the individual patient anymore. Hope your child is feeling better soon!

Oh no, I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I'm in agreement that your wait was way to long. I just don't like the way medical treatment - a.k.a. doctors- have become. Patients use to matter. I'm sorry if my tone came across wrong!

My doctors appointments are not bad for the most part. There are a few times when he has been behind. But since I always bring a book, (I am a big book reader) I always read until I get called. Sometimes I will be so into the book that they have to call my name more than once. Since it doesn't happen on a regular basis it doesn't bother me.

LOL I am sorry, I'm not laughing at you but as I was reading this when you got to the "they have to call my name more than once" all I could think was the mood I was in this morning I would have been tempted to say "oh could you wait until I finish this chapter?"

Right now my doctors visits are non existent. I cant afford health care and no insurance. Would probably go to the emergency room if I needed something bad enough. I want to move to Arizona.

Yes it is nice of course his father is required to do it as long as insurance is available but that is going to end in a few months. Michigan has a special thing now called "No Child" it's just for kids but basically no child in Michigan will be without medical coverage. Means dealing with the state and tons of paper work but for my son it will be worth it - he is always into something, stitches, broken arm, poison ivy, just having fun :(

Our visits are not that bad! We might have to wait awhile in the waiting room but the doctor is really attentive and doesn't rush through anything, that is what I like the most.

Oh yes sounds very typical. I've waited even longer than that to see our doctor. It feels like they schedule patients appointments very close together and if one appointment takes long it messes up the schedule for the entire day. I always try to get one of the first openings in the morning so hopefully the wait won't be to bad.

What's up, Doc? - rabbit
Wow! I want that doctor. Thats really fast! I usually spend about an hour or more waiting for the overbooked patients ahead of me to get through. Then comes the weigh-in, blood pressure, temp taking and questions and I'm put in a tiny, claustrphobic room to wait another 30 minutes. Now the doctor comes in and has you tell all over again why you're there, he looks at it and then leaves (15 mintues). Another 10-15 minutesd go by and the nurse returns to either take a specimin or culture and sends you to the waiting room for a new appointment and/or prescriptions - another 10 minutes at least. My appointments take around 2-3 hours!

When I go to my doctors I do not need an appointment as I go to a medical centre where I can see most of the time my main doctor I go there at example at 10:00 and I would be finished seeing the doctor around 10:30 which is really great that I do not have to lose that much time unless I am going to have a test but then that normally takes around 3 hours as I have to come back every hour, to complete 3 tests results.

It is always something wrong with the picture. Because I know the feeling because they put you in a room and make you wait. Then the nurses comes in to check on you and to found out what is wrong with you. But then they say the doctor is on the way over and then it is taking a long way to get into the room or something always comes up and then they keep making up excuse. Then I get pissed off and then when they finally get in there. You dont have the pain no more but they still want to keep you there and then they take forever to write out the preciption and send you on the way.
