Getting your blog discovered

As bloggers, we need and desire traffic. This is especially true if you are using your site to generate income, be it with affiliates, AdSense or pay-per-post. Every day I see questions on this board about getting traffic. I think I have come up with a solution, but would like your input before I finalize it.
The best method for getting traffic is to have your blog ranked high in searches. Whether this is Yahoo, Google, Technorati or other blog searches, being ranked high is of the utmost importance. The best way to increase your ranking is to be mentioned in other blogs. When other bloggers mention and link to your blog, your rankings increase. Case in point, I have two blogs listed with Technorati, one has no other blogs linking to it and it's ranked at over 2.5 million, the other has 5 blogs linking to it and it's ranked at about 750,000. Now, imagine if you had 20, 50 or even 100 blogs linking to yours. You would come up early on most every search.
Here's my plan; to build a service where bloggers mention and link to other blogs in their blog. Everyone joining this service would guarantee that they would mention every other blogger in the service and would be guaranteed to be mentioned by every other blogger. By promoting the service, there would be a constant influx of new bloggers, reading and writing about your blog, in exchange for you reading and writing about their blog. Everyone's rankings would grow.
My question is this; I'm willing to set all this up and begin getting this going. It will take time. I know it would benefit many, so I'm willing to do it. If I were to offer this at a one time charge of $5, do you think you (and others) would be willing to join? The money would just cover my time to maintain the database and inform members of when new members join so they can blog about them. There would be no guarantees of income, but with increased traffic, increased income should follow.
My thought is that if people have to pay something, even a mere $5, they would be more willing to fulfill their promise of blogging about other members. I would worry that if it were free, they wouldn't take it serious and would not fulfill their promise. My drawback is that I hate sites that charge you to look at their database of surveys or data entry sites. That's why I wouldn't charge more than $5.
Let me have your input. I hope to have this program up and running the beginning of next week. Then we can start getting some great traffic flowing through our sites.

I'm not sure that charging would be such a good idea, when there are services like BlogExplosion and BlogAdvance that do this for free already.
Fair enough, you don't always get people linking to you after they've seen your blog on there, but I have in fact made quite a few blogbuddies using those services, and have in fact gained quite a few of my links from there too.
In order to charge for this service, you need to offer something REALLY special. otherwise people will stick to using free services like BlogExplosion.

Thanks for your input. I'll let you know when I get it up and running. The masses have spoken and I won't be charging. There are already almost 30 responses. That would be thirty blogs linking to each of our blogs. That would provide quite a bit of new traffic and much better rankings.

well the most effective way to get your blog listed in search engines is through the backlinks , they are very very good for blogs and drive traffic on a huge basis , when i didnt have any links there were no visitors to my blog but with four links only there are atleast 20 25 , and will pick up as i do more linking

Hello jayperiod,
let your dislike for sites that charge money for their usage rule your decision. I see by many of the comments I have read on mylot that there are many illinformed like myself. If you do not need the money then do not charge but know that there will be many grateful for your assistance.
Good luck in your venture.

It's a good idea, but $5 is a bit too much for most bloggers to want to pay. Maybe 1 or 2 dollars would be more reasonable, because there are already sites that do something similar to your idea for free with link exchanges. The high cost would probably drive a lot of potential customers away.

Let me give you some advice as an internet expert...
You don't have a chance in hell...
First... Search engines don't like listing blogs or forums. And in order to get them to list you... you need to be an expert in optimisation. If you don't know about optimising a website... you are already lost.
To start with... you need your own domain name to be properly listed with any search engine.
Starting a blog is about the equivalent of asking a question on myLot. If people don't like your subject... they simply won't take part in it.
Forums with a good subject still take a couple of years before they become popular. The most popular one I did belong to... was one which was discussing television programs. This is something most people can relate to.
Search engines have many rules to list websites. One of their rules is that a link between two websites has to be relevant in order to be important. In other words... to make it count... both websites have to talk about the same thing. If they don't... the search engines are more likely to penalise you for it... rather than promote it. But duplicate websites are also against the rules. Brake that rule... and the search engine will ban your website for life.
I do laugh when you talk about being listed 750.000
Who is going to find you... Most people will not look past the first 20 results in a search engine.

It sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't pay anything for it, because I'm broke. But I say go for it yourself. Luck favors the bold.

That is a wonderful idea. I have two blogs, one that is with blogger and one that is listed on blogfeast. I put links to my blog on myown website, and cross reference them. I also have joined and listed them with blog explosion to help draw traffic. This has helped some, but I have been looking for new ways to draw more traffic to them. I agree that most sites that charge a fee for membership are not what they are supposed to be, but in this case I think you are right. If they do not have the membership fee, How could you be certain that they would list or link to everyone else's blog. They only other way would be to physically check each blog on a daily basis, and that would quickly become too much work! I will be watching for more information on your service, and would be more than willing to join. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I'm glad to see there is general interest in this idea. I think it will benefit many. There is money to be made, we just have to find ways to make it.

It's not a bad idea, in theory, and if you can get it set up and actually running, it could be a good program.
The main flaw I see with your plan is the whole guaranteeing to mention every blogger in the service thing- if you get 50, 100, 1000 bloggers joining, it's going to be nearly impossible for each one to mention 1000 others. So maybe make it a guarantee for each blogger to mention 5 or 10 others, for starters.
I'd be interested in seeing if this gets off the ground. I don't think I'd fork over the five bucks until I was sure it was going to work.
