What do you do when you are hungry, and there is not enough food?

Just get busy and hope I find a piece of gum. If I am truly hungry then I am sure to find a can of something or box of something and prepare that. The word enough says you have something. True hunger means you will eat what is available. Hope you are not in this situation and that all is well for you and yours.

Ok, in that case check this out my friend.... This site is Resources for Low income Families. It has food assistance links, low income home energy assistance program, free medicine for low income families as well as links to other resources. http://freefamilyresources.com/id16.htm They have some great resources. Found it elsewhere here and maybe you might be able to use it. Anyone who sees this should be able to access it.

Visit friends, go to the grocery store get samples of everything or go to bed and sleep with dreams of food. LOL

This is a really good idea, actually. I did product demo's and in one of the towns I went to I know that I had homeless people come in and eat. Sam's club has lots of samples on the weekend, and at the end of the day, they often will offer two or three samples of everything, just so they do not have to throw them out. Are you old enough for the services of a local senior center. Around here, if you are on the list, by having come in for a free blood pressure screen or some such, you are eligible for free commodity disbursements. You still also ought to be frank with your pastor. They would not wantt you to go hungry.

Not sure how to answer this one. When I'm hungry I eat and eat. I eat too much. But when there isn't enough food I'll basically find something. Usually a sandwich, some cheese, you name it. I'll find it. Or I'll run to the convenience store.

I will snack and pick around on anything I can get my hands on if that happens. Sometimes we will get low on food here at home and I will eat what should have been saved for the supper meal, for my lunch. I then have to call my husband on his way home from work, so he can stop and pick up some carry out food. After that, I have to get my grocery list made out again so it doesn't happen again for a while. I hate shopping though and I will stock up the best that I can every time I go to the store. It just doesn't seem to last long when my husband has to take lunch, I have to eat lunch, and my 15 year old daughter eats 24/7. Then I have to also allow for supper time food.

If you need to eat but have nothing to eat, you can only suck your thumb. :/ But seriously, I will drink water, lots of water since it is still getting something into my stomach, and it will help to dilute the hydrochloric acid in me so that I will feel less hungry. Well, assuming water is plentiful enough. :P

If there is not enough food to get rid off the noise your stomach is making, drink tea with sugar. The best is green tea to make you feel less hungry and it´s healthy. Supposing you haven´t got any tea, have water with salt. The salt will maintain the liquid in your body. Result: you will feel as if you´ve eaten something.

Thank you. I have been drinking water all day, have a headache, and am still hungry. So, now I will add salt and see if that can help.

beans - Beans are an economical source of protein, and are high in fiber.
Now adays I fix beans to economize on our food budget, as they are very inexpensive, and high in protein. As a child we often stretched the food we had with gravy and bread, and that is still one of my favorite comfort foods. Pancakes, without eggs, just milk and oil and flour and leavening was another thing mom would fix, if we were all the way out of everything else. This summer we were very low on food, but never ran completely out. I had a garden, and we bought up ahead during the school year, when I have a full time job. I almost always have refries, and other beans on hand. I have baking staples that I bought in bulk.

It sounds as if you're still having trouble financially. At least your husband is working now. Is he getting paid this week? I have never been totally out of food, and thankfully I have my parents watching so that I don't run out until I get a pay check! Can you use a credit card at all? Just a few simple things like tunafish or eggs would be cheap and would give you some nutrition and protein, which would fill you up. The problem with pastas and cereals is that it is all carbohydrate and you feel hungry again realy quickly. I also got used to eating chicken legs (I use your recipe, by the way, and they're great). They're cheap and filling. I hope that things get better, but I know from the situation that I'm in that you will probably also have to dig yourselves out of a hole before you feel at ease again. We'll get there, Margie! Have faith!

He has not been paid yet, has to wait another week for a weeks check. Then two weeks later for a two week check. I cannot tell you how horrible it is.

I would do other things to keep my mind off the hunger. I would go on the computer and play a game which doesn't take much brain power. I would then, maybe read for a while. If this hasn't taken my mind off hunger, I would go to a friends house for a visit, you are sure to get offered a cup of tea and a cookie there.

Go to the food bank. But inexpensive foods at the bulk food stores and become as creative as I can with them.

that is really hard to say. but i can tell u for sure what i would not do under any circumstance: think of food. once u start to think of dishes, foods, flavours, it becomes worse trust me. and it's like an avalanche u have no control over. u start to think of something simple, then u imagine u'r favorite foods and u'r even more hungry then u were before.

Well so far thank God, I haven't had this problem. Well of course there are the times when money has been tight or we havn't done shopping. But there is and has always been food in the house. Maybe not food I want, but food none the less. The other day I was so hungry and couldn't find something to eat that I wanted or could make because of lack of groceries, so I opened a can of green beans and put some ranch dressing on them. It wasn't what I wanted but it served it's purpose. I would get in contact with the food bank and let them help until you don't need them to. After all that's what they are there for. I hope things improve for you quickly. How is the new job going..still good? God bless and take care.

There is alwasys food in our home. We have food storage so that we can survive and help others survive in case of an emergency. I often worry about others who do not have enough food though. I run a food pantry for low income families and many dont have much food in our community. It is so sad to see little kids looking through their parents food bags as they pick them up. They are so excited to have food. It is sad that a great nation such as the United States does not take better care of our own people

You are kind. Today my husband got a paycheck, after 8 weeks of a very difficult time. Very hard. But, God got us though it, along with all my friends on here and prayers. Blessings to you, and thanks for responding to my posts.

I feel so bad for you margieanne. if you have a credit card can you charge a few cheap food items on it? ramen noodles are very cheap, also a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs. it would not cost much at all and you would have some food. I would feel better to because then I would know you would be eating. please, do not deprive yourself of nutrients that your body needs.

Thanks Sandie. This is a horrible situation for hard working middle class older people to be in. We are over qualified for assistance temp. but starving and not paying bills. What is America all about?

I drink coffee. LOL I do this very very VERY often!!!! The coffee has some carbs in it and caffeine is an appetite suppressor. So, I figure that is my substitute. And it works! :) Trust me, seven kids, two adults, and 3 dogs...it gets costly for food. And then when one factors in that I can not eat most of what we buy...it eliminates more of what I can have. So...coffee.

I would call the pastors of the local churches. They are usualy wonderful about helping. You may also check with social services to find out who provides food for emergencies. There is information online for help in your area. You may also check for the food banks where you are allowed to go pick up food. I would defintly try to get some bags of beans and rice because you can strech them and make meals.God bless and let me know if this helps.

We have one food bank here. You have to pay for the food. It is old and rotten stuff. I did it two times, and threw out 95% of the food. I cannot beg for help. The church helped in the beginning. I was thankful. Now that my husband has started working, it's no different, but everyone thinks things are fine. He has not been paid yet. He has to wait another week for a one week salary. Then two more weeks for a two week salary. It will be close to 3 months without income.

I had that problem when I was unemployed. The government wouldn't give me food stamps or any other help. I was lucky in the fact that I had enough staples to make biscuits or a loaf of bread. I ate a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These days I can't even look at one. I ate a lot of cereals. I never told my friends about the situation because I felt like enough of a failure. This lasted for a couple of months, after wich I got another job.

I am sorry you went though that. We are going through that now. I am sick of corn flakes. My husband is 70, and was layed off for discrimination. Too much to get into. Anyway, he had to fight for unemployment, which is a joke in itself. He got two checks out of 8 weeks. No public assistance. He finally started a new job a week ago. We have to wait another week for a week salary, and another two weeks for a regular salary, and are so far behind. Now starting to use the c/c and that is a big mistake. We are still paying for that mistake from before. Living is so hard when bad times hit working people. The system only works for people that live on it, not for temp. help for working people.
