A top story on CNN (sorry, I can't link to it as it is a video) reveals a young girl who went to jail for drug sales and identity theft. While in jail she was found to have cervical cancer. When the jail was willing to release her from jail to get treatment for drug addiction, she declined to leave. She said that as long as she is in jail they have to pay for her treatment that is needed for the cervical cancer. The county system has paid for one procedure already and will now have to pay for another ...that is estimated to cost tax payers 3-5 thousand dollars. The lady chose jail to get free medical care. What do you think about this?!

Well i've always said that criminals know how to work the system to get exactly what they want, this just prooves it.
This also raises the question of whether or not our medical is set up and operating correctly. If it's more affordable to go to jail or prison to get medical treatment than what does that say? I know there are indigenous programs for the low income people. I needed to apply for one to cover the expenses of my trip to the ER years back, I didn't qualify yet I saw a woman and her three kids (two teens and an infant), who incidently were traveling in a BMW, get accepted into the program. As a broke college student working full time to just pay the bills I did not qualify yet someone who was clearly much better off did. Why? Our system has some serious faults and I think this brings them to light.

I didn't even know that people could decline to leave prison to be honest.
I don't think its fair that there are people who go to work, and work hard every day, yet can't afford good medical insurance, yet those who commit crimes and so on are able to get free medical care.
What's so special about them?

I can hardly balme her in this country. It's not easy to get help when we really need it. I have a friend that was out of work, couldn't find a job, no medical insurance and many medical issues. She couldn't get help from the state because she was living with us and has no children. She was getting so depressed, sick and desprate that she considered committing a crime so they would put her in jail and she could get treatment for her many medical issues...That's sad that we have to resort to illegal activities to get help.

Interesting topic, one thing I can say it shows that she has low self-esteem to not want to get out of jail for medical services. My thought if she didn't have a job or no means of getting a job, she could get help some kind of way.
That's a touchy one because if she leave, what if she try to commit another offense or far worst just to get back in.
I honestly don't know about this one..it could go either way. I guess they made the right choice to keep her in, just to make sure she wouldn't do any harm to self or others...
Very good topic, makes you think...

It seems that the girl thinks she'll be better taken cared of if she stayed in jail. maybe whe won't have any means of paying for her bills if she were out of it.
this is a sad case. imagine yourself opting to stay in jail, with people you barely know, just to get medical attention.

I can put this short, the whole system stinks. Nothing is fair anymore, and nothing makes sense. We live in a country that is antiquated and dishonest.

Yes, Margie, you are so right. We actually had just sat at dinner and talked about our really mixed up system and values with our teen children. They were asking how things worked with medicaid, insurance, welfare and other things. Then I come in here to the computer and see that story.

Sounds to me like the woman has her priorities straight.
What's a jail record compared to cancer? Sounds to me like it's about time our taxes went for something besides the war.

I think it's pathetic, and it shouldn't be allowed. When someone is released, then they're released. I don't think that the court or the prison should change that. If they did, everyone would start doing the same thing for free medical care. Think of all the millions of dollars we'd be spending to pay for these people. I just don't think it's right at all.
So I'm so upset about this, that I could go on for a long time - but I won't!!!

With the way health care costs are escalating these days, I can half understand her motif. She must not have a job, so no medical insurance. I don't agree with this, but I can understand where she may be coming from.

that is so sad what some people do to get medical care. they need to have free medical care for everyone who cant afford it. the only way i get free medical and dental is if i get pregnant again. its so sad.

I'm not sure what to think. If she did choose to leave no medical insurance co. would take her because she now has a pre-ex. condition. She would wind up on welfare or going through a county program in which tax payers are still footing the bill. So what is the difference? What would you end up doing?

You cant blame her. It is sad that your country has come to this. That a person gets better help in prision than in their own home. The lawmakers are so concerned with making new laws that they have lost touch with reality. People are suffering on a daily basis from lack of food, clean water, medical care, dental care, and housing. This is getting all too common and it needs to be addressed on a higher level. We have forgotten what is really important and it is not money, it is people. Another sad truth is that the people who are paying the taxes, with which this lady is receiving medical care, comes from people who are doing without medical care themselves.

I think it's a sad statement about our country when someone opts for jail just so she has a chance to stay alive! How sad that this woman had to make this decision. That is, IF she did it beecause she had no other choice, which I am assuming is the reason. No insurance and no money to pay. I think if I had no insurance and no money for the bills and found out that I had cancer or something like that, it would be tempting to go to jail to get it paid for. I know it's hard on us as tax-payers, but some people have no choice. It's just sad.

Well if she wasn't in jail she could get nearly free care from some hospitals as they have funds to pay for it. As for her, perhaps she doesn't think she has the money. Person I think it shows someone that there are problems witht he medical system in the USA. Don't you think so? I have heard that the USA is one of the countries that spends the most on things for medical care, but there are still people without insurance and what is to be done about it?
Have a nice day

in the uk it is strange when we see stories like this as thnkfully we have a different type of health service. to us it seems odd to have to stay in prison to ensure that you get medical treatment especially for something as serious as cancer.

Well, I think that she felt that there was no alternative. The well fare system is just not there for the truely needy any moe! The lady could have applied for social assistence, there is a chance that being previously encarcerated that she would be helped out. Social assistence also includes medical and paid health care. This sounds to me as though she hasen"t checked out her options. She should be released from prison irregardless.

I think the lady should have been sent to a hospital instead of being allowed to stay in jail as a hospital is better equipped to meet her medical needs.
