Mine learned before they were one year old. It worked well for them. I taught them, with help, at the YMCA. It was really a neat experience for both of us.

If you're wanting them to be high/ upper class/ competing type of swimming, people would recommend about age 2-4, or any age under 8, as some New Zealand swimming athletes advise. If just general emergency ready situations, fitness and casual swimming then anywhere between 8, 15 would be okay.

If the parents are swimmers, they should teach the child swimming from the age of 2 and above. There are people who start swimming exercises to babies which are 1 year or less. I feel it is better to teach swimming at very early age, so that they will not know what it is at that age. Otherwise, they may not like to swim.

I learned when I was 5 years old but I would've learned earlier if somebody taught me how. My son is 2 years old and I'm planning to teach him how to swim this summer, he loves to waddle in the pool and I know I'll be easy for him to grasp the basics. Most competitive swimmers started swimming when they were 3-4 years old but their developments depend on their discipline and determination to perfect the swim techniques.

I recomed for YOU to teach your kids from year 1 of thier lives even though they will not be able to swim it will teach them not to be afraid of the water in later stages of life.
Hope this helps!

As soon as possible. I think let it be natural for them and they will take to it with no problem. Just let them play around instead of formal lessons.

you mean learning swimming without help? i think starting at the age of 4-5! before that you can just learn your child not to be afraid of water, and like swimming!
but i think the sooner they can swim on their own the better it is! an accident can happen so fast!

I have heard that people have started their kids in swimming classes when they are 6 months of age.I wouldnt do that though. That is too young in my book.My husbands sister takes her daughter to swimmming classes when they have them and she was about a little over two when she started taking her.She went with her to her swimming classes at first and she did okay. She then enrolled her in a class that where they chaperone them swimming and her mom seen how she would be by herself. She seemed to do okay. Its good to have them take swimming classes so they will be prepared and so they will not drown.I think around 2 years of age is good for them to start taking swimming lessons.
