Debt - demon or necessary evil?

We have maxed out 1 creditcard and have an overdraft, together combined total $5000.00. These are our only debt other than the mortgage. We acquired the debt due to my staying home with the bub and we only have the 1 income. Though we know any debt is bad, at what point should it dictate the end of a relationship? In our case its been sited by the other half as half the reason. I thought for better or worse but the man says thats just for young newlyweds and not those in their second relationship with 2 sets of kids. Whats your view on any of this? Does your debts dictate your life choices?
