I have a desktop computer and my daughter want's a laptop. Do you need internet at home to make the laptop work? I heard that you do. Another question, how do you hook up a wireless router to your modem to make it work. I do have dsl and my modem only has one ethernet port. Would I have to get a new modem or do you hook the ethernet from the modem into the router, and then the ethernet from the router goes into the home computer? Confusing!!! Thanks for any help you can give me.

I will try to help you. First, to make your laptop operate you do not need internet. However, I dont quite understand what you meant with "to make the laptop work". If you do want an internet access for your laptop, here are the things that you have to do.
First, if you already have wireless router, you need to plug that in to your dsl modem. Usually the router will come with a cable data to plug in a modem. Then you need to make sure your laptop is capable of wireless internet access. Turn that function on in your laptop. If at this moment your desktop directly connected to your modem, you have to do either these as follow;
a. if your wireless router has cable connection then connect that cable to your desktop or
b. get wireless internet card for your desktop
c. get a hub or switch. Connect your modem to a hub or switch then connect that to your router.
my advice is first do option a then if it is not possible you can do option b.
I hope it helps

In that case, you need a switch or a hub to be connected from your usb modem. Then from there, you can connect that to router.
Hope it helps

Oh, I meant to get internet access to make it work!! My whole thing is understanding how to hook up the router, thanks for all your help. The only open space in my modem to hook up the router to is for a usb cable. I only have one ethernet port and that's going into my home desktop computer from my modem. Verizon told me I need two ethernet ports, one for my desktop and one for the router? I don't know, why I'm asking for help. Thanks!

u need internet connection on ur laptop only if u wanna get online, else u can use it without one, and btw u can use ur laptop while u rcharging it that way u can make sure it never goes totally down on charge and always stays at 95-100% and u can work for hours together without any worry, nut if u frequently let ur laptop to get bown to 0% on battery its likely that its lifetime is reduced

the internet is not actually needed.if only u plan to upgrade your laptop or for all other internet suefing stuff do u need it.so its not important if u have an internet or not.u can actually ask your internet provider foe a new modem for having one more LAN port in the same modem else u can use the same asu told by bypassing the ethernet( it will seriously affect the dsl speed) the first one is my choose for u.

I too have a laptop and just like your daughter, I too am very much interested in getting an internet connection. And I got one for me!! I am not very much familier with hooking up wireless router since this is not very common in our country. We basically use broadband connections, dial up connections and GPRS net provided by mobile service providers.
I think this link will help you get what you want to know: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/690753.html

You don't really need an internet to make the laptop works. If you asked to be able to surf the internet with the laptop do you need the internet. Then i'll say yes indeed. Just hook the ethernet from the modem to the wireless router, and adjust the right setting for the wireless router. If you need help to set the router, ask specialist.

It depends on your place of residing. In my country we have such places where all is wireless. It means we do not have to plug in internet wiring at home. About your second question I don't know about it. maybe you can ask other people in mylot. Have a nice day.

My daughter just bought a laptop for her hubby today, andI went with her. The guy in the storesaid you need an internet connection, in order to get online with a laptop. he also said she should fool around on the internet or just play games on the laptop to totally drain the battery then let it charge for a full 12 to 18 hours for it to be at peak charge

From my understanding (and I'm pretty new to the whole wireless business) some laptops, especially the newer ones come with software for wireless. Take Earthlink -- which I'm told will be on my new laptop which is coming soon. I'm told once it's installed on my computer and the thing has a PC card (which I believe would be the router..but I have no idea) that it can connect to your phone line and thus to the internet WITHOUT the help of wires. Communicating to your other pc's in anywhere. As long as there's a phone line there's intenet with wireless laptops.
So it all rather depends on the laptop your daughter has..did it come with software for wireless internet? Does it need a pc card?
My new laptop has a pc card, which I believe I'll plug into it. The software works with the pc card to connect you to the internet. Depending on the software from what company it might not be cheap. New computers that come with their own software tend to have free trials for you to try out before you have to begin paying for them.
But then again..I'm not expert. I haven;t been able to learn much from folks and have had to glean what I can from magazines, user manuals and websites. Good luck! Maybe you could try googling it?

if you want the laptop to have internet connection then you will need a router to share the internet connection with the desktop. You dont need a new modem just get the wireless router connect the ethernet cable to the router and then run another ethernet cable from the router to your desktop most laptops nowadays have built-in recievers so it should pick up the signal of the wireless router.
