Reading -- do you read aloud or silently???

reading - silent reading

I personally seldom read aloud, well only if am alone in the room while reading. And another thing, I seem to understand the text am reading more easily when I go silent reading. But I have a classmate way back in college who really find it hard to comprehend what she's reading when she can't do it aloud or least make some murmuring as she reads. What about you, how do you read?

I am a silent reader too and tend to absorb more while reading in my mind. If its studying for exams or just plain reading a book, I prefer to read in my mind.If I read out aloud then it goes over my head..LOL My hubby reads aloud sometimes and I find it annoying.

Depends. If I am reading for pleasure, I read to myself. If I need to study or memorize like I did when I was acting I would read outloud. Trying to read as if I was speaking to someone helped to learn my lines faster. Just reading a book, I can go faster cause I can move over text that is less important.

In my opinion, reading aloud is very important, that can help your spoken Eglish.I came here only 5 days on mylot.I come from China.I expected that I can get a lot of foreign friends and learn Eglish well on mylot.

when i feel annoyed about something and i can't concentrate on what i am reading, i murmur the words and i feel like i can understand the words more. at times when i am alone, i love to read aloud and listen to myself talk. but most of the time especially when reading discussions and responses here in mylot, i try to just read everything silently. gladly, i am understanding everything!

I almost always read to myself but there have been times when I really wanted to read a book and started reading aloud to understand what I was reading. It usually works and when I get what I'm reading I can continue reading in silence. I guess I'm getting a little older and my mind wanders somewhat. But I do like to read.

I read aloud to comprehend. I read silently to concentrate!

I read in myhead and really resent having to read out loud because it is so slow. Now that I have kids I can't avoid it and have in fact had to read all the Harry Potter books out loud. Yikes!

im a silent reader. can't seem to understand what i'm reading when i do it in a loud way. my mind works better because im using only one sense. i read aloud only when i try to practice my diction and my speech.

i relly feel to read silent is best because we can understand the particular topic very well and by reading newspapers aloud its very good because if u read loudly then u san know the pronounciation for that particular word.so reading newspapers loudly is best and when i will be alone also i will read silent suppose if i am not understanding the topic then i read loudly on that particular topic pronounciation we wil get by reading some thing loudly we can get correctly

After so many years of reading, I realize that if I don't read aloud, I tend to read much faster. If i were to pronounce each word precisely before knwoing what it means, this will definitely slow down my reading speed. As for your ex-classmate, it was a habit she needs to change if she wants to read faster... because upon reaching adolescent, your brain will absorb more information in a single split second that when you were younger, so you don't really have to worry whether what you just read would make sense or otherwise. Not only reading aloud would waste a lot of time... but it was actually a bad habit.

for me its easier to understand what i am reading when im silent. its hard to keep it in my mind when im reading it loudly. i remember when im still at school i study silently so that it will absorb in my mind.

I think I understand it better if I read aloud because I feel that it sticks to mind more if I say the words out loud instead of reading it silently. If I can't read aloud because there are some people around me, I can try to read silently but I have to repeat it several times before I can finally understand what I'm reading.

I read silently. I can't concentrate when I hear noise, even if it's my own voice. I can't comprehend the content of what I'm reading. My sister is the opposite. She understands better if she reads aloud. As for me, I'd try to find a really quiet spot so I can concentrate on what I'm reading.

I only read aloud when I miss the melodious sound of my voice. ROFL :P But seriously, if I want to practise speaking, I will read aloud - not that often though. I normally do a lot of skimming and pretend speed reading so reading aloud is a big no - since it would slow down my speed.
