A star appears in front of my name. What does it mean?

Sorry heart, but you are mistaken about the meaning of the stars. Please read below to clear up any confusion you have. You don't see if you have a selected best response unless you go back to your discussions and see a pencil symbol or by going to "my best responses" on the left at the bottom of the disscussion types list.

The star is a representation of how other users rate your discussions and responses to their discussions. You can rate either + or -...or use an ! to report abuse of a user. The star ratings go from one to ten, ten being the highest rating. You have a seven, that is very good, a nice place to start. The colors really don't mean anything, other than 7's go in white, 9's in red,...so on. I hope this helps you understand better. If I can help in any way, please let me know. Welcome to myLot and happy posting.

I think your problem is solved now. But my advice is that never get too much attached to your star. It doesn't show your quality that much. Why I am saying so is because I wanted to congratulate you for having the same colour with me but before I could respond, your star became a 7.
Thank you, and sorry for I didn't help you :(
