How much do you know about computers? How smart are you?

My sister just had a computer crash... So she re-formatted and re-installed Windows 98. To her surprise, the old internet version of Windows 98 did not work properly on the Internet... If she had asked me... I would have told her to install Internet Explorer 6 on top of Windows 98... But she did not ask... Instead... she went to buy a new computer with Windows XP. This is not the first time I hear that sort of stories... So what about you... did you ever do something like that? And of course... she never back up anything... So she lost everything... How often do you back your data... Do you know how to back up your emails, favourites and address book?

some people who are not so familier or good at computers will think that if something is not working properly it needs to be replaced which is not true with computers, yes i have heard about such stories like a person brought a new computer because his cd-rom was not working properly and he thought it was built in with the cpu and cannot be replaced.

i do a backup three to four times every week sometimes i do it everyday. i place my backup files on a external hard drive and another one on a separate hard drive. i also put my files on a cd, that's how important my files so i make sure that i have a backup of all of my files.

Aussies2007 To her surprise, the old internet version of Windows 98 did not work properly on the Internet... She doesn't know what she is doing. If she did she would not be having any trouble getting windows 98, 98se or even windows 95 to work just fine with the internet. Your sister just needs to get everything required installed properly and that involves a lot more then just installing windows. There are so many drivers and software packages required to make everything work that it can become a nightmare. So by moving into a system with XP she has simply sidestepped the problem as XP does more without a lot of extra installs compared to say windows 95. As for Windows 98 working with the internet I know it doesn't have any problems because I have been running windows 98se for ten years and everything works on all the sites I want to visit. MySpace is an example of one of the more demanding sites and my systems does it all over there still. So the problem wasn't her computer or her operating system it was your sister. She needs a geek fix. It could be just a problem of not having the latest version of Java installed or any number of other packages needed to make everything work.

Oh and BTW in thirty years of computing I have never really done a very good job of keeping everything backed up and I have never lost anything. One major mistake people make when they loose everything is that they re-format the hard drive. When you do that everything on the drive is in fact lost but it probably wasn't necessary to have formatted the drive. Everyone seems to think you have to re-format when you go to install windows but it just isn't true. I know as I have done it a number of times.

Oh dear yes it is dreadful when we have a lot of problems with our computers, you say that you would of told your sister to install Internet Explorer 6 well this gave me big problem I cannot use any Internet Explorer as this always crashes on me and therefore I have to use Mozilla Firefox instead. I also have problems with windows XP and windows 98. I back up my data every 2-3 weeks this is what the technican advised me to do, and no I do not understand how to back up emails etc,. but so far have not had a problem with these.

It is funny how people keep saying that Internet Explorer is not working. I have used every version of it since 1995 and never had a problem. Since January I am using the latest version 7... and it's great. Took me a while to get use to the new toolbar... but I love the new feature with the tabs. People also say that Windows does not work... but they still use it.

Most problems with internet explorer are the result of viruses or spyware. I personally have never had a problem with IE although I greatly prefer Firefox. I think IE7 was a big step backwards.

That's sad, but extremely common. I've had so many people ask for my advice on buying a new computer. They tell me their old one is broken. I usually get them to let me see it first. Half the time all it needs is an antivirus or antispyware to clean it up. Occasionally they'll need to be reformatted. I think the worst was a friend who was told by Gateway that she needed a new hard drive. All she really needed was to change the boot device in her BIOS. I keep all my important info backed up and a seperate hard drive. I back up everything maybe once a month. I haven't had a virus problem or a failed hard drive in years, so I don't feel the need to back up any more often than that.

I have a complete backup of the whole operating system and installed software, so I can turn the clock back at any time. I also have backups of all data that I wish to keep such as images, office files and my contacts list for Microsoft Outlook, so I can reformat and then simply drag and drop data back after reloading Windows.

You back up your emails, favourites, address book... by going in Windows Explorer and copying the whole folder somewhere else. In Windows XP for outlook express emails C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities Favourites C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Favorites Address book C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

people need not to buy new computer to have XP running in their system. aussie is right pentium II can handle XP with no problem. instead of buying new computer, spend your money to give extra power to your old unit... adding or replacing memory to a much higher memory, add new hard drive (much higher capacity) for your files. i think these is the right thing to do specially if your short with money. i'm still using Pentium III 1GHz, this unit is what my friend paid me for setting up his internet cafe 3 years ago. which i also assemble for him 7 years ago when he ask my help bcoz he want to buy a pc. this pentium III 1GHz was before with 128MB memory & 4.0GB HDD. i also experiencing financial problem. so instead of buying new unit, i bought memory so i have 512MB now & i replace the HDD, i put 80GB Seagate as my primary HDD then the orig 4.0 primary drive is now my slave drive to have a backup HDD for my files & installers. later last year i bought DVD Writer & G-Force 4 video card so i could run my Need For Speed Most Wanted & NBA 2006. until now my PRECIOUS pentium III (my one & only unit) is running smoothly.

Well I would tell her to install Firefox, but I don't think that was the problem. I usually don't backup anything. If I have some bad luck it goes all down the toilet. But that's ok with me. If I really need something I just download it again.

She had windows 98, was probably a good time to buy a new computer. I did loose a hard drive once, but I back-up my important data on a regular bases. It still takes weeks to learn the new systems and get the new computer set-up the way you want it, I know I just got this new computer with Vista about a month ago and I'm still working on setting up all the software and learning the Vista system. Ciao

Just a reminder, whenever your computer crash, make sure to make a back up, this will save your file before formatting it. For important files you need to backup it weekly, to make sure of it.

my computer know how is a bit hodge podge as i've had to teach myself. :( thus far, i know a little bit of basic html and can put up a bare bones website with webmonkey. http://www.webmonkey.com/reference/html_cheatsheet/ i can reformat a balky harddrive and install linux kubuntu and windows xp home with little difficulty. in fact, i did so yesterday. i can pull out a crappy dvd writer and slip in a new one. that i tell you is serious savings! same goes for hard drives and all external drives. i also back up data once a month, but still lost some crap. you will always loose some crap even if you back up daily, most of mine was half downloaded files. unfortionately, my saved address book didn't save correctly so i am having to rebuild it using my online addy book on yahoo. my favorate websites saved like little charms. they are easier to save via export than the email addy book as that was in linux. i did save my sources.list so that saved me big headaches too.

i think i'm in the intermediate level when it comes to computer. i can do basic troubleshooting, install programs, reformat, back-up, etc... it really helps when you know a lot about computers because you will not experience panic attacks when something's wrong with your pc. and it will save a huge amount of money since you don't need to bring your pc to computer shops when you experience problems, and you don't need to buy a new one.:)
