I would love to have a flexible boss, I should say. By flexible I mean that he can be a little strict at work and encourages everyone to work hard while not going to the extent of pressuring his staffs to much. And he could also hang out with his staffs once in a while without losing his credibility as an authority in the office.

Thank you faraza for the nice question. I am very happy to post something here, all coming from my experience.:)
I have been in scientific field and I'd say I would like a boss who is reasonable. I wish he would act more on his brain instead of his emotions. I found a reasonable boss is critical for real achievement in a scientific activity, simply because this whole world is running by natural rules instead of people's wills. Therefore you can imagine we scientific workers always find ourselves end up in various unexpected results instead of the single beautiful one expected by our bosses. in this case being unreasonable means the boss may be unable to recognize that every coin has two sides. He could simply be unhappy and point out it is us, who worked on the project, ruined all the work and effort to obtain the beautiful result he has expected; he could possibly order to repeat and repeat all the effort until his expectation is finally achieved. On the other hand, a reasonable boss, instead of irritated and shouting around, would think it over and possibly recognize new phenomenon exists in the unexpected. And he would not deny us when we try to find more -- be it something interesting and important to keep track? As a result, he will never ignores any chance to any new discovery including those lead to a Nobel Prize; and there would be far less fake scientific breakthroughs making their bosses notorious.

i work in a diagnostic lab. my boss is too concern about patient care, but she forgets the staff's welfare. she is a quick thinker, as quick as she would change her decision, just because we received one complaint. Customers love her very much, but we are not so sure how we feel about her. she's great in finding fund for the department though...

I prefer a boss who is capable (and does at times)everything he asks his staff to do.
It is really encouraging for people to see their boss helping out when things get busy.
It makes them feel like they are more a part of a team and nobody really likes a lazy boss anyway.
