How Does Your Computer Affect Your Vision ?

Today I have been sitting in front of my computer and taking small breaks in between.I don't feel any problem while I am reading or typing here ,but when I am away from it my eyes are itching a bit. Again, when I am back in front of the screen ,my eyes cooperate like my best friend.I would think this is opposite of what should happen.
Do you think using the computer for a long period affects our vision ? Has this happened to you ? What do you do about it ? How important is the monitor with regards to our eyes ?

We sit a bit long at our computer and forget to drink and blink. I keep water handy and made it a habit to sip and type. Also with dial up I am better since I can do dishes etc between loading certain pages. Also the window at my computer causes me to blink especially in the afternoon and evening. The curtain needs pulled to reduce the shine and glare.
Anyway, drink plenty and blink plenty and this should improve for you.

I think it is unlikely that the itchy eyes are due to the computer screen. They could be due to something else near the screen, perhaps you have aplant there or something that is irritating your eyes.

Hmm....interesting, I've had a range of different experiences with staring at the PC for long periods of time. Sometimes, my vision starts getting blurry and then when I visit sites with light colours and then to sites with dark colours, I start to see these lines - they go away eventually though.
My eyes sometimes go all watery when I try to focus on something for a long time, like when I'm reading long emails or web pages :P
Best thing to do is to take a break once in a while from the compuiter, especially when you start feeling dizzy (if this happens, look away from the screen and just slowly roll your eyes for a few minutes to ease the stress - this will help to prevent dizzyness)
All in all, a break once in a while (say, each hour) should do your eyes some good - but if you're concerned that your eyesight is deteriorating then avoid long periods in front of the PC and book an appointment with your optometrist ASAP :D

this is typical of CVS (computer vision syndrome). i did face this some time ago when i had blurred vision and headaches. some suffer from neck, shoulder and back pain, eyestrain and irritated eyes and change in colour perception. i did require opthalmologic consultation.
The following steps can be taken to reduce eyestrain from computer use:
·Make sure the computer screen is atleast 18 to 26 inches away from your eyes.
·Arrange the monitor so that the top line of on-screen text is at eye level. Placing a monitor too high strains the eyes, causing them to dry out. ·Arrange lighting to minimize glare and reflections.
·Keep the computer screen clean and dust-free to minimize glare.
·Take frequent vision breaks to stretch your body and rest your eyes. ·Remember to blink often to keep your eyes moist.
·Place reference material alongside and as close to the computer screen as possible to avoid frequent head and eye movements and focussing changes.
·Get yours eyes examined every six to eight months by your eyecare specialist.
....and, ofcourse watch greens and gals as often as you can, this one is exclusively for you. LOL

I have a friend who told me that if I continuously stare at the computer screen more than forty five minutes, it will destroy the cells in my eyes area. so to avoid this from happening, he said I should look at the greenery such as green leaves for relaxation of the eyes cells. I have to do it for five to ten minutes before continuing my work. I think this helps me a lot.

Maybe you are experiencing eye strain with the prolonged use of the computer. Studies shows that working in the computer is not harmful to the eyes but the physical discomfort associated with it such as eye strain, eye irritation, back aches and pain of muscular nature have found associated with work place posture and the total ergonomics of the eyes, head, neck and seating posture.
Most of the eye strain is cause of poor lightning and improper placement of the reading supplies, computer screen or keyboard.
I think here are the useful tips for you:A frequent break in eye usage by simply glancing out of the window or looking 20 feet away will help. Simply standing up in place for 5 seconds will reduce fatigue.
Hope this be of help my friend.

It Certainly helps Maribel:D Since yesterday I have been trying to look at the screen through the corner of my eyes. It's already getting possessive about me,lol. Thanks, buddy!!

i used to wear eyeglasses only when using the computer or reading. i realized that recently, i'm having difficulty without my eyeglasses. i mean i need to wear it almost always since things are getting blurred already. im thinking it's an effect of staring at the computer for long hours. i want to change my habit but i guess this is something we have to get used to since technology is changing and lifestyles also.

Computer can affect your eyes adversely sometimes.
If you are spending more than about 3 hours in front of a computer you might notice some kinds of syndromes
THIS INCLUDES:-
*HEADACHES
*LOSS OF FOCUS
*BURNING/TIRED EYES
*DOUBLE/BLURRED VISION
*NECK AND SHOULDER PAINS
THIS MEANS THAT COMPUTERS HAVE A ADVERSE AFFECT ON US IF WE USE IT FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME
THE ABOVE MENTIONED AFFECTS ARE CAUSED DUE TO YOUR EYES AND BRAIN REACTING DIFFERENTLY TO CHARACTERS ON THE SCREEN THAN THEY TO PRINTED CHARACTERS. OUR EYES HAVE LITTLE FOCUSING PROBLEMS ON FOCUSING PRINTED MATERIALS, which is characterized by dense black characters with well-defined edges
But in case of the characters appearing on the screen doesn't have these characters and due to this its difficult for the eye to maintain focus and remained fixed on them.due to this involuntarily the eye tries to focus by flexing its muscles and soon creates fatigue and burning of the eye. This is the main reason why your eyes seems so tired after a long period in front of the computer and this creates many indirect affects mentioned above.
SO in order to prevent this you could use a glare screen or computer eye glasses.

That's a scientific explanation.Yeah, probably my eye muscles are flexing little too much having to focus on fixed points.I will look into the possibility of using anti-glare screen.Thanks.

setting in front of a computer is not an easy task .it lot of problems .the main problem with eyes .for avoiding problem with eyes make use of computer glass or you can use good quality of monitor like LCD. the CRT monitors is enemy to the eyes .please avoid this CRT monitors. in my college i am using LCD monitors .and i am also using computer glass .now at present my eye site is very good .i do not know what happened to my eyes in my future because of this computer.for reducing this type of problems taking healthy food is much more important.

Prolonged use of computers and related instruments cause eye strain and it is advised to look away every hour or so and do certain eye exercises. I personally feel I have tired eyes at the end of the day. Sometimes continued tv viewing causes the same feeling and it is not good. It is a sign to give your eyes a break and do something less stressful. I feel my eyes are burning after prolonged use, I immediately remove my contact lenses and splash my eyes with cold water. This immediately soothes the eyes and I feel better. If we don't take care when the need arises then our eye sight is bound to deteriorate over time. Better to be safe than sorry.

So true.Better to act while we have time.I ,too, splash cold water on my eyes when they burn or feel tired.Yes,it happens when I watch tv for a prolonged period.Whatever I do,seems like 'complete' rest during the breaks is must. Thanks,Greengal!:)

Taking breaks is a good idea-- but when you do, make sure you give your eyes a chance to focus on something distant. If you just go from the computer to, for example, reading the newspaper or a book, you're not really "resting."
From what you replied elsewhere, your screen refresh rate shouldn't be the problem. I don't know what kind of monitor you use, but if it is a very bright one, and most of what you do is typing on a white background, like myLot, turning down the brightness a little (not much) can soften the glare from the screen.

I keep trying to adjust the screen brightness, but the other point that you mentioned could be another reason.I do have a habit of going into my books or a newspaper when moving away from the pc.That won't help much...I can't give up reading ,but atleast I am trying not to do it during the breaks.
