There are a few ways and places you can create ebooks, in fact I've been looking into doing the same thing for myself.
If you're planning on selling them, or in some cases even giving them away you may want to eventually pay for a program that does it, as you'll get a lot better security (people won't be able to edit it, or rebrand it for themselves etc)
I found one site where I made a practice one to see how it works (there's a link to it in my profile) but to be able to sell any ebooks created with that program you need to buy it. If you're giving them away you can use the free version.
There's also adobe, but again I think you need the paid version. Open office is another that I think you can create ebooks with but I haven't tried it yet.
As I said a lot is going to depend on what you want to do with it. You're best be is to probably do what I've been doing, finding a few free sites and practicing with them.

Sounds like me - I won't pay for anything online - unless it's something that I already used for free and know works etc - and for the most part any information you want you can find for free with just a little research - Over time I've built a list of many sites that have freebies that I'm always checking on - you just never know what little gem you might find :-)

Interesting. I am just in the middle of setting up a new webpage on my website, it will contain hundreds of e-books and I know that one of them describes in detail how to create an e-book. I have links on my website right now where you can download e-books for free. Check it out

I have been doing a little bit of research in this area as well lately. I have found http://www.lulu.com which is an online self epub. They also have some very helpful information on their site about how to go about creating and marketing your ebook. BTW, have you decided what you are going write them on? Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'm creating tutorials at the moment. I have a free one online and it's been such a success (not moneywise) that I thought I'd create others of it's kind and maybe a few not of it's kind! lol Ok, what does that mean? I won't be creating any tutorials on writing! LOL
My free tutorial is here: http://thomasthetankenginecake.blogspot.com/

If you want to create PDF files for free from almost any program like microsoft word, excel, wordperfect etc, you could try dopdf at www.dopdf.com/ I guess this is the only free program available around here in this category. it is a very decent and cool program to try it out.
