What are your Smoking Habits?

I have realized that it's not just a nicotine addiction that I suffer from, but smoking is related as a habit to so many of my everyday things. For instance, I have to smoke when: I wake up, after I eat, after I shower/bathe, after relations, during phone calls, in the car (during a trip longer than 10 minutes), after any kind of stressful moment, etc. Is there anything that anyone can suggest to help curb these habits?

Quitting smoking is the hardest thing a smoker has to do. I had to smoke when I got up,while washing my face and brushing my teeth. I would smoke 2 or 3 (COFFIN NAILS) before breakfast. I constantly had a cig lit. If I just put one out and the phone would ring I would lite another one. When I was done talking I would lite up again. When I would wake up during the night to go to the bathroom I would lite one up and when my bladder was emptied I would throw it in the toilet. If i woke up to a noise or something I would lite one up, even if I just threw one in the toilet. About 6 years ago, I had to have major sugery and I was in the hospital for quite a while. Because I was on pain killers smoking never entered my mind.Previous to this I did try the patch and did quite well for a while.Since I quit I often think how I submitted my wife, chikdren and grand children to that POISIONESS smoke. I know that I will never pick up a cig. My health means alot to me and I am not going to make the mabufacturers any richen than they are. DO IT FOR YOURSELF or if you don`t care for your health keep puffing away. Good Luck.

you must be very strong to quit smoking or have some sort of motive to quit. now i'm trying to quit for a girl , because she is not a smoker and my smoke disturbs her , so i'm thinking getting a plant and every time i want a smoke i water that plant, in small amounts, because i think i will want to smoke a lot :) why i am trying with a plant , well that's another story :)

I am a smoker like you and it is quite difficult to lower it that fast. I suggest doing some sport or joining a gym. When I joined a gym club I definitely smoke much less than before. Also chewing a gum or a some sweets whenever you feel like it. The only problem is weight gain. I think the best is having activity and realizing you can't smoke too much if you do a work out since you need to be in great shape to do this.

Weight gain is one my biggest fears with quitting...something that's always in the back of my mind.

My smoking habbit is, well I don't smoke. Never started. I don't like the smell, or the fact that its not good for your body in a big way so it was easy for me. My brother smoked forever it seemed like and now after he has emphazema he quit. He finally got a patch, but he had to try several before he could find one that worked for him and didn't make him really sick. As for the habbit part, well years ago I found myself as the but to a joke. For a long while I started say "And everything." at the end of my sentences, all of them almost. I don't know why I just did. I didn't notice it until all of my family and close friends started to immitate me whenever they talked to me. I was embarrased, I realized I had started a bad habit and I sounded stupid. Everyone kept reminding me to stop and after a little bit I did. Maybe if you tell your friends they could help remind you to do something else until you do it all on your own. My dad used to smoke and quit, but from then on he always had a tooth pick with him or chewing gum. Hope this helps.

Yea, that would be a good idea, if I had that kind of support system...unfortunately at this place and time, i do not...my husband is at work all day, while I'm home with the kids...sure they make me feel bad sometimes, but I don't smoke around them...and sadly, I hate to admit it, but it's my only release from the everyday pressures...so what I need is a healthier substitute for that. Thanks!

Do not give up all of a sudden. Give up the habit slowly. Try to sleep more.

Sure...let me just tell my 5 kids that they're on their own so I can sleep...LOL. Actually, I have said in the past that if I was ever to quit smoking, I would need a 2 week vacation to sleep the entire time just to make it thru! lol

I too, am an addict. I can't help it and you sound like a spitting image of me, well at least when it comes to your habit. My dad quit cold turkey after smoking for 41 years. He did it with a strong will and peppermints. We he would want a ciggerate, he would suck on a peppermint. It worked for him. I have too, way too many kids to try to quit smoking now. I have tried a lot and found out that I like myself better when I smoke.

I think you are absolutely right. To give up smoking you have to get rid of those moments that make you smoke. People say that smoking helps them with their stress. But I think people want a cigrette in the moment of stress, to take them away from that thing. I used to smoke about 20 a day but then a couple years ago I stopped allowing myself to beleive that I was enjoying it at any moment of the day or that i needed it at all. That coupled with all my smoking friends going off to University allowed me to give up almost completely. It sounds wierd, but i have forced myself to beleive it is disgusting, unattractive and inconvenient. And this is what i really needed to give up because it really did work. I now only smoke when I go out for a drink, and Im in smokey atmosphere anyway. I still think it's discusting but the drink allows me to enjoy it. I don't really think about it any other time

I am a regular smoker since my seventeenth year of age and still continues with the wretched habbit. Many a times did I tried to quit the habbit, but everytime the attempt failed desperately. However I have not tried any alternatives. The experiences of certain friends of mine show that the habbit can be stopped only by a strong self decission. Our ability to control our mind plays a vital role in this. I am planning to give a fresh trial to this. Let me see if I can get rid of this habbit.

Do not give up the habit all of a sudden. Try to give it up slowly. Spend more time in reading books.

I am a smoker by habit as well. I rarely smoke a whole ciggerette, normally a third to a half of one, and I do that 20 times a day. Chewing gum does work - but only if you reach for that instead of a ciggie.
