I have a 8 month old cat. He is acting strange these past days. Now a friend told me that it are his hormones and that if I wanted to let him castrated I have to do it now. I think he's to young but he keeps me up at night with his behaviour. Does anybody know what the best age is and what to do about his behaviour.

I have always heard that the best time to do this is after the first time they go into heat as the younger they are the easier on them therefore making it better but they have to go into heat at least once before you do this . And at eight months your cat should have been in heat already so anytime now would be good .

I understand what you mean. Male cat's do get symptons becaurs off hormones. I don't know how that's called in English but I do know they do.

It's a male cat not a female cat.

It's actually called neutering (females are spayed) and it should be done at 6 months. After that he'll calm down considerably.

I didn't know the English word for it. Here in Holland we call it castrated. I just red that a respondend called is snipped. I surely hope he will calm down. I adore him but not at night. Thanks for your advice.

I would say he's a bit old to be starting to think about it, mine was born in september and we had him snipped last month, I think 5-6 months is normal. The vet said 'if he's all there its time' so you can have a look and if he is al present and correct, get him seen to as soon as possible.

Okay. He's 8 months now. He's my first male cat. I like the word snipped better than castrated like we call it here in Holland..

I have 1 male cat and 1 female cat. I have recently had them both fixed and they told me that the best time is to get te females at 4months old before they go into heat and for the males is 5months old befor they start to spray. I was also told that if you getyormales fixed before they spray they are less likely to spray and mark thre territory that if you were to wait.

Raissa, your cat is a good age to go ahead and get neutered! Most experts believe the best time to spay or neter a cat is at six months of age. However, I have heard of healthy female kitties being spayed as young as three months of age. His behavior will also be modified when neutered as he won't still be lookig for a mate, spraying his scent to mark his territory, etc. Hope I was helpful! :-)

Experts all agree that six months is the ideal age for the process, even though some healthy female kittens can be spayed as early as three months old. I have yet to hear of a neutering taking place before 6 months. :-)

About six months of age is ideal. So any time after that is ok. But the younger the better, that way they don't get into any nasty habits. Like spray absolutely all over the house.

Your cat is the perfect age to get castrated. You want to castrate your cat before he starts spraying. If your cat is acting out, a spray of water from a plant mister will teach your cat that certain behaviour is unwanted.

After they weigh 2 lbs they can be fixed here. My cat is almost 8 months old and has gone into her first heat, which is really a bad thing, shes gets outside alot and i DONT want kittens! I would get him fixed as soon as possible, You want to help control the cat population and it will help his behavior. If he hasnt started spraying you MAY be able to prevent it from happening!

The recommended age for a cat is 3 months old. Yes, they can be done that young. The reason it's recommended younger is because they then don't think about spraying. They also don't have the hormonal imbalance problem associated with it as they get older. There is no pain associated to the cat as they are put under while it happens. They are then given some antibiotics and pain medication once it's done. After that, they don't think anything of it. This is very effective for male catchs which are more prone to spraying their territory. I have 2 cats and had both of them done and my mom has 4 cats currently and all of them have been fixed. It's a very common procedure with the smallest risk possible.

it is a good thing indeed to have your cat(FEMALE) castrated(that's how we call it here in romania too) at an erly age ....BUT...my Vet told me that is more healthy for a cat(female) to have kittens first and then to castrate it. He said it affects less her genital organs....and thus ..lives longer .... For male cats ...i guess any time .

I heard the same thing. That although he is an indoor cat it's also better to let him get fixed. The hormones.
