Would you like to see changes to the American Idol voting method?

Is there anyone else out there that feels changes should be made to how contestants are eliminated from the competition? If so, why? What would you recommend as a change? I definitely think they need to do something because some of the better singers are getting eliminated before the bad ones. People are not voting for the better singers. I would still let the fans vote but I think the judges should decide from the fewest votes who should leave and stay. If this was the case, I think Sundance and Sabrina would still be on the show.

I was so mad last night it wasn't even funny. I couldn't believe that Sundance and Sabrina got voted off. It was just wrong. I think the judges should be the ones to pick the ones that should decide who goes home during the 24. Heidi and Sonjayia would have definitaly went. I don't understand people who vote. Sure they may have lots of friends and family but get real people. It's a singing competition. After this I may never watch the show again. It's just wrong. They should make it the top 14 if it keeps going this way. People need to open up their ears or turn up their hearing aids. It's making the show look bad when bad singers get to go on.

I too was annoyed with what happened last night and feel that the fans are just voting for the persons look or they are from their area. There is no way that Sundance and Sabrina should have been voted off. They are better than Sanjaya and Brandon and Haley and a couple others for sure.

I agree totally with you, beautyoperator. I also was so mad it was just so dissapointing! It does almost make you not want to watch the show anymore. Really, what is wrong with people?!

I think that there should only be ONE vote per phone, or ONE vote per cell #. That will stop a lot of the people who have the automatic dialer and let it just keep running and running for two hours straight. I still cannot get over the fact that Sundance left and Sanjaya stayed.

That is exactly what I was going to say leedug. There should be only allowed one call from each phone. The same person can sit there for 2 hours and vote for the same person. It isn't a very accurate way to find out who is more popular.

That would be a good idea to limit the number of calls and text messages from phones and cell numbers. That way there would not be such a difference in votes that the contestants receive. I was disappointed too that Sundance was eliminated as I thought for sure again that Sanjaya was leaving. I was disappointed too that Sabrina got kicked off.

Yes, I had thought of this idea too...this would definitely solve a lot of problems and they really should consider it.

I do think that not only should people with cells phones be allowed to vote but people with a computer should be able to vote also. It still would not be everyone but it would be a closer vote than just those who have the option to use a cell phone.

That is an option that I would like to see available as well and would make things easier. Phones voting has proven to not always be reliable.

I agree that the judges should have some sort of "power" - since they currently do not have this power - why are they called judges??? They give advice - but cannot make any decisions once they get to the top 24. Over the years of the show - there have been too many great singers get voted off.

I think the judges should make the final decision. The fans can have some say but the judges should determine who stays and goes from this contest. The judges do this in the show "So you think you can dance". I think they should have the decision in this as well.

I think that they should do like the show So you think you can dance. The fans vote and after that the judges choose who should be eliminate in the bottom 3. But I don't think that they would change it.

i agree completely as the judges get the final say in that show and that is how they should do it here too. The judges are more realistic to who the better singers are and do not go by popularity. I think they may change it though, especially after this past week.

After last nights show I really feel that changes should be made. I have no idea of my own but I like your idea. And I agree, Sundance and Sabrina should still be in the contest. Sanjaya and Haley are not as talented as they are. I was so upset last night. I swore I wouldn't watch the show again but I will.

This season has been quite disappointing compared to previous seasons and I think some of the better ones have been eliminated already, though there are still some good ones left. I thought Sanjaya should have left and possibly Brandon, instead of Sundance. I think they may consider making changes after this season.

Sundance leaving was a BIG shock. I thought for sure that he would be atleast top 3 of the guys. I am sad to see him go, coz he had a great Voice! I do not know how they could change the voting though - but something needs to be done!

Sometimes other contestants asks their relatives and friends to vote for them and they get lots of votes..I guess the judges should have a say on this as well.So the decision works fairly.

As I have thought from the beginning, you should vote for who you want kicked off, not who you want to stay, I think results would ring more true then. That's definitely the way to go. I liked Haley and I'm kind of glad she got to stay, but Sabrina did NOT deserve to go.

That is a good idea too to vote the person that you want off the show instead of keeping on the show. That could possibly work and help keep the good singers on the show longer. I was definitely sad to see Sabrina and Sundance go. Hope they can get a record deal with somebody.

kgwat70, I definitely feel that the voting should be changed so that the public does not vote for their favorite, but instead votes for the one that sang the worst. That way, the results would not be skewed towards the popularity of the contestants, but instead would focus on their talents. The way it is now, the focus is on popularity. Here is an example. The way it is now: Let's assume that you have 100 people voting for 12 singers, and one of them has the support of 25 of them by popularity, and nothing to do with singing talent. The remaining 75 voters are then split among the other 11 singers, so the most popular gets to stay, regardless of the performance. How it would be if the public voted off the worst. All 100 voters, would cast their vote for the worst singer. Let's assume that 25% of the people thought that Sunjaya was the worst. He would get 25 votes against him. Then lets assume that the 25 people who voted for him the way it is done now, would vote for other singers to be voted off. They would not all vote to remove the same singer, so we would have to assume that these votes would be allocated equally among the others. So, on average, Sunjaya would get 25 negative votes and the others would average about 7 votes each. Clearly, if you read the other posts on this subject the least popular singers according to talent were Sunjaya and Antonella. I think voting for the worst singer would end in a much fairer result.

I have definitely read the post and I already felt that Antonella and Sunjaya were the worst singers in the groups and they should have left weeks ago but with the voting the way it is it did not happen with Sunjaya. I agree with you and the other member that voting for the person you would like to leave would be a better idea.

I think they need to do something about the voting also. There has been shows before that the wrong person actually won the contest. It was truly seen that there was a better singer than the person who won the contest. I think maybe sundance was a little better than Sanjaya. They all can sing fairly well, but we are looking for the perfect idol. I think they need to come up with something new for the votes because alot of the people are not getting the number of votes they should have got to begin with and the others are getting votes whether they can sing or not even if they are not the best.

They definitely do need to change the voting methods as I hate seeing good singers get voted off and the bad ones keep staying, though at least Antonella was eliminated last time. Some of the suggestions other members have made are good ideas. Maybe we should all write American Idol and tell them what we think. :-)

i definitely think there should be some reform on the methods for American Idol voting. i think you should be able to vote online as well as by telephone. If you could vote online, there is a slight chance i might participate in voting. A it is now, i just watch and criticize everyone.

Yes, AI seems to be a popularity contest. If it were based soley on talent, last night's results would have been different. They should allow Internet voting like on the show Rock Star. Then after that, the judges should decide between the final 2 who stays and who goes.

It definitely seems to be a popularity contest and that is not what this show is all about. Internet voting would be great as I would do it myself but they would have to put limitations on the amount of voting from a location.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes the system DOES work. They did get rid of Antonella, after all, But Sundance definitely should've stayed, and Jarod. I wasn't a huge fan of Sabrina, but I think she had one of the better voices. so yes, I think we should have more ways to vote. Some of us can't run our phone bills and text messages up!

I think even the judges would agree with you after last night! Just the look of suprize on Paula's face said it all. I wonder if the judges should have some veto power throught the entire contest.

Yes I share your feelings and frustrations seeing the better ones leaving at the early stage. The judges or panel of judges must be placed to ensure that there is fairness in the competition and not left to popularity of a individual with the fans.

I think the judges must vote trough the whole compettion ,except in the finals.Only the finals must be decided by the people. This will prevent people to feel dissapointed with resluts

Ahhhmmm if im given a chance to change some stuffs in eliminating the contestants, i would say that.. ahhmmm 50% comes from the votes from the people and 50% comes from the judges... This will apply during the top 24, then top 20, then top 12 till make it to the top 3... EXCEPTS the GRAND FINALS In the Grand Finals, Its more likely if 100% of the winning chance would come from the Votes of the people... Because, the future of the winner would reflect on that idea! I can see that, if the majority of AMerica choose the particular contestant and he/she wins.. Then we have nothing to argue with coz America voted for him/her, not only bcoz people love him bcoz of his/her personality but also he/she is TALENTED.. isn't? And so, we can be sure that America will support him/her all the way after the contest ryt? But if there's a participation of judges in the Grand Finals, whoever wins the American Idol will sooner have a problem by getting the support of the public.. Coz there's a chance that not majority of the people voted for him/her and he/she just won coz the judges think that he/she is a great singer... Unfortunately, there's always an incident like that when it comes to a singing contest has involvement from the judges...

I do feel that there should be changes to the voting of american idol. It is unfortunate that Sundance and Sabrina were voted out when they were much better singers than some of the people still there. The judges should really have the final say. However, the show was designed to have the audience vote.
