weight loss tips

I just came across these great tips and thought I'd share.
Discovery Health Channel National Body Challenge medical advisor Dr. Pamela Peeke shares her top 10 tips.
1. Get real and be specific. Write down three or four realistic goals that you can stick to. For example, "I will try to lose one pound of body fat every week. I will walk for 30 minutes minimum five days a week." Avoid fantasy-land goals that will only frustrate you.
2. Get prepared. Throw away all the junk, the processed, and the "bingeable" foods now and replace them with fresh, whole foods like lots of water and veggies. Buy a new pair of walking shoes and find some clothes in your closet you feel comfortable to walk in. During a lifestyle change, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail!
3. Get support. Whether it's your best friend, spouse, or pet, it helps to have some nonjudgmental and nurturing support when trying to lose weight, especially during trying times.
4. Make daily notes. Research has shown that keeping track of your daily exercise and food intake in a journal or notebook will increase the likelihood of success. Keep it simple, or if you're inspired, write a novel! The key is to hold yourself accountable.
5. Create a food-free reward system. How about a new workout outfit, pair of jeans, shoes -- or what the heck, even a spa treatment, shopping spree, or weekend getaway? You deserve this kind of treatment when you reach your goals.
6. Buy a pedometer. A pedometer keeps track of how many steps you take daily. Wear it every day, around home, work, and while exercising. Your National Body Challenge goal is to increase your steps by 10,000 or more daily! Remember this: You'll burn roughly 100 to 125 calories by taking 2,500 steps (about one mile). The goal during the challenge is to burn 300 extra calories and to eat roughly 200 calories less in a day. This 500-calorie deficit is equivalent to one pound of body fat per week and a healthy boost to your self-esteem.
7. Don't skip breakfast. Research shows that the most successful "losers" never skip it. Try to keep it balanced with some protein, a healthy carb, and a small amount of fat. Here are some examples: an egg-white omelet with fresh berries and a piece of whole-wheat toast, or a skim milk shake with fruit and yogurt.
8. Nix the late-night eating. If you eat a lot of excess calories after 8 p.m., you wear them the next morning. Put a stop to this by making sure you have a healthy dinner consisting of lean protein, veggies, and fruit.
9. Eliminate processed sugars. Processed sugars are carbs that have been stripped of their valuable nutrients. How can you identify these sugars? They are all white: table sugar, pasta, rice, and bread, and they're nothing but trouble, since they kick up your appetite for more of the same.
10. Have a mid-afternoon snack. This will curb your appetite and provide fuel for your after-work walk or workout at the gym. Some great snack ideas include: reduced-fat peanut butter on a multi-grain cracker, a couple of pieces of low-fat string cheese and an apple, cottage cheese with pineapple, or try a low-fat cheese microwaved in a whole-wheat pita.

Those are some really good ideas. I have done some of them and they do work if you stick to it. I still try to stay away from sugars, and eat a lot of veggies and fruits. Don't eat much pasta or potatoes either lots of salads. I try to eat more often to speed up my matabolism. It is hard to diet and any tips people can give makes it that much easier. Thanks.

Definitely as they are a good source of carbs and in a more natural state as compared to pasta and bread as they are usually made from refined wheat and also white rice as that has had the goodness removed, all the main goodness is in the husk ie brown rice.
I'm a more naturally 7,8, and 9 girl myself!

I use and online food journal and it has helped me tremendously. I have changed a lot of my habits as far as eating, exercising and everything. I am 30lbs down so far and very excited about it! I have used most of these tips which I have learned through the website I am on...AND THEY WORK! Going on a diet is not the way...you have to do a lifestyle change, that is what it takes and that is how you keep the weight off.

30 lbs ia an amazing weight loss, well done, I think you are right that a lifestyle change is the answer. I have been watching a new tv program called fat doctor on discovery life and home and it follows very overweight people who have gastric surgery. One guy was 40 stone and had a walking frame with a special shelf on it so he could put his stomach on it when he walked as it was so big it ws down to his knees. he has now got his life back. Another guy was 26 stone and did not seem to eat a great deal but he was diabetic and the doctor said if you are diabetic and on insulin you only need to eat a very small amount of extra carbs and you pile on the wieght. I think this is behind the atkins diet as they talk about insulin and some people can't deal with carbs at all. Anyway within 5 months he was down to 18 stone and losing, he can only eat very small portions and he can now walk for miles and also swim.
Let me know how you progress. Have fun.

Thanks, sorry I've been a while getting back to you but my poor computer broke a week ago and I only just got it fixed yesterday and I have loads of emails to get through.
The funny thing in my family is my sisters and myself usually want to lose weight and my younger brother needs to gain weight.

My husband does the shopping and he is into those Ramen noodles, I do add peppers and spinach to them, but that might not be good enough. I have a cheap pedometer courtesy of Special K, but it is not that good. Have to get a good one. Now if only I can get my husband to like whole wheat pasta. Then I would not have to use two pots. I find that even though I walk 5 minutes five days a week, the white stuff negates the results.

All my colleagues now are going on a diet because they want ot be ready for summer time...they are always hungry and they eat only vegetables.i think that a diet without doctor controll is damaging for the health

I'm pretty lucky that I have "yo-yo" weight. Gain easily and loose easily. But I don't see any harm to start listening to your weight loss tips to keep balance in me. Thank you for haring weight loss tips !!!

Great tips! I am especially a big fan of the pedometer. I walk everywhere and I find if I am at 8,000 steps, I have a lot more motivation to get it up to 10,000 rather than plunk my butt down, as I would probably be doing if I didn't know what number my counter was at!

Great tips, thanks for putting all of that together for us. I can eat 200 calories less (maybe) but I am not so sure I could swing the extra 300 calories to be burned. Hopefully now that summer is coming, that will change.
