Have you felt fortune brush you past? I lost $300.

In Singapore, we have a game known as "4D" that stands for 4 digits. It is a form of lottery where you win a cash prize if the 4 digit number you bet on matches one of the winning ones.
2 nights back, I had a dream. It was the first time I woke up with a number so vividly fresh in my mind. I was practically mouthing it when I woke up though I had no idea how it came about. Usually, the closest I got was a jumble of scenes where a number might be interpreted from each. I would then try to make sense of my dream and come up with a 4 digit number to buy.
The number I dreamed of was "6846". I thought I might get a small windfall for once - for despite my diligent pursuit, I have not won any form of lottery before. And so, I placed a good bet for today's draw. But no, "6846" was not one of the winning numbers. Instead, I saw "9846" starring at me in the consolation prize section. If only that "9" was a "6" instead... since it was only a consolation prize, the amount I might have won was only $300. I concede that it is no big amount - yet I can't help but feel shortchanged/cheated/deprived nevertheless.
Have similar experiences happened to you before? Do you even engage in any form of lottery? If yes, how big is your appetite when placing the bets? Have you won any money before? How do you deal with the impotent frustration if you have not? Any close shaves like mine?
Do share your thoughts.
PS.: I wanted to put a smiley face at the end but I am still trying to get over my disappointment.)

I remember last year when I had bought a six number lottery ticket.
My usual routine was to stop at a coffee shop early in the morning and check my numbers in the paper.
I would play this game. I knew where the numbers were in the paper and I would cover it with a napkin and reveal one number at a time.
I had the first number and missed the second. At that point I was pretty sure I would win nothing, because you need at least 3 right to win anything.
Well I had the next two. So now I knew I was a winner of a small prize with 2 numbers left to uncover.
If I got 4 numbers, I knew I would win several hundred dollars, so things were looking up.
I uncovered number the fifth number and it was mine!
So now I knew that if the last number was mine I would have 5 out of six and win a few thousand dollars.
Well, it was my number.....
I won $4,430 with that ticket. It was a fun way to start my working day. I didn't know until my lunch break exactly how much I had won.
The number that I missed was 6. My number was 8.
6 out of 6 that day paid just over 4 million dollars....
aggggggggghhghhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Wow, very nice! I check my numbers like how you did - I just memorised 4 of the winning numbers and match them with my tickets.. the result of whether I win or not would be quite obvious by then. :P

I live in Brazil and here we have a lottery (among others) called Mega Sena, it paid in Wednesday a prize around (converting from our national currency to USD), 18,000,000.00 (eighteen million dollars).
One single winner, and now a man is claiming that he LOST the ticket in the street. And as far as I know no one claimed the prize yet.
If this story is true, imagine how this guy is feeling.

And the question is becoming funnier (at least for me, I am not involved, not even in the same state).
More people started to make the same claim. That lost the ticket.
The prize was not claimed yet.
And I forgot, there is a 90 day limit, if the prize is not claimed until the 90th day, it is gone.

Oh boy, I wouldn't want to be that lucky/unlucky guy. To hold such a fortune in your hands only to have it slipped through your fingers... I can't even bear to think about it...

I do play the National Lottery here in the United kingdom, but I have never won anything over £30. I never really bother whether the numbers drawn are close to mine or similar in any way, I just accept that the winning numbers are different ones.
Losing is quite easy for me because I have had a great deal of practice.

LOL I love the fact that you stated that you would put a smiley face at the end but your still trying to get over your disappointment. LOL
Look at it this way...you may have been shown the wrong first number because you were not supposed to win that much. Maybe just enough to help you out. Maybe at this time, you have have changed too much if you had won a large sum of money. So, for some reason, you were not meant to win. IF...you are ever shown numbers like that again, I would still play them because you may find that you are being rewarded in the future. :) Timing is everything...and sometimes the universe feels it is not the right time for something.
I do not play the lottery that often. There was sometime ago when I worked at a place that sold lottery tickets and there was a close...ok, right on number.
But the reason I say close is...A person came in and told me the numbers they wanted to purchase. But for some reason, I heard different numbers and made the lottery ticket for what I heard. When I handed the ticket to the person, the person told me that I gave them the wrong numbers. Oops...sorry! So, I took the ticket back and canceled it out and gave the person the correct numbers.
The next day, the person came in and told me that the next time I ever make a mistake, he wants to buy it because the numbers that I heard, were right on! LOL
After that, anyone that I made a mistake with always wanted it.
And often times, they would win a small amount. LOL
So, I guess if I want to win the lottery, I would have to be the person making the lottery ticket instead of another. ha ha

Reminds me of a story: A man dreams of the number seven continuously. When he goes to the horse races he finds that Horse number 7 has a jockey with number seven born on 7th July and a trainer who is 70. The horse is also assigned the 7th track. So the man runs to the bank withdraws $7000 and bets on this horse. Of course his dream was right. The horse came 7th.

It's true! If you look at my recent discussions, you would notice one similarity - I like to end off with a smiley face when I ask people to share their thoughts. It's always good to be polite (I think) because no one is obliged to be nice to me and to respond to my discussions. I get very encouraged when I get a good number of responses and I don't believe in taking things for granted. :P
And I still feel cheated. *sulk*

Oh I have never heard of this game but it sounds very good but oh the number 6 is unlucky and maybe this was the reason that it changed into a 9 as number 6 is in the Devils number and number 9 is representing God, so probably this is what happened but good luck for next time around. Yes actually in Australia we have a big horse race called the Melbourne Cup and I dreamt the numbers when I woke up I could still remember these numbers but I did not have any money at all to put a bet on that day, I could of asked one of my friends as I only needed $1.00 and I would of won as those numbers came in exactly as I had dreamt what a silly girl I was for not asking my friends for $1.00.

w(^o^)w ...Look, baby...just try to read those numbers properly in your dreams next time. You're losing your power. I'll bake you some carrots for good luck.

I have never dreamed of numbers in my dreams, but I do have a friend that does, and he has won 200,000 15 years ago because of those numbers. I don't get too upset about money that I did not have in the first place, but I do wish I could win big though.

Oops, very narrow miss huh?! Poor you, maybe you did dream 9846 but in your hurry chose 6846. Fate my friend, you weren't destined to win so you didn't. Cheer up, more chances will come your way. I personally don't believe in lotteries, my Dad does and he used to always buy a ticket in my name. We haven't won a pie yet, just maybe someday. I consider myself lucky because money comes my way in the most unexpected ways. Well I'll save those experiences for another day, I don't want to aggravate your disappointment. Once again, cheer up and put those smileys back! :)

Someone mentioned something about 9 being the god number, the 6 being the devil. I suggest that devil gave me the number but god took it away. But as I was brushing my teeth last night, I was thinking that perhaps it makes even more sense that god gave me the number 9 (which was what came out in the end) but devil entered my dream and spoiled it all!

Aww, I'm sorry lordwarwizard, I imagine you are bitterly disappointed. Believe it or not, in my entire 50 years I have never bought a lottery ticket or participated in any other 'chance' type game where one pays to enter a chance. I know myself well enough to know that I'd be so upset for not winning and then wish I had my money back! (yeah, I cry over spilled milk too!Ha!) Our state had a lottery slogan a while back..."Somebody's got to win, might as well be you." But I still couldn't bring myself to try! I wish you luck in future attempts!

I am honestly very surprised to come across so many comments like yours. Here in Singapore, I still get to read about people winning some 300 mil loto jackpot in other countries.. yet many on this discussion are saying that they don't even "gamble" in this small way?
I must say "incredulous" is what I am feeling right now! :P

Sorry to hear about what happened.
I rarely buy 4D. If I do, it'll just be a small sum. This usually happens during Chinese New Year when almost everyone else is buying so I just tag along. Did you read in the local papers about the biggest 4D payout of $15m? Some guy said that his father appeared in his dream and gave him a number. He pumped down $5,000 and hit the big jackpot. How lucky.
So never mind about this small prize, maybe the big prize will come your way soon! Think positive! :)

something similar happened to me a few years ago, in australia we have a lotto, it's played on tuesday, weds and sat night, you get 45 numbers and you have to get 6 for the top prize, some times it can be worth over 20,000,000 bucks, anyway i was playing with my tarrot cards and came up with 6 numbers, so i put them on for sat night, they didn't come up, so i got more numbers, put them on again, they didn't come up again, so i didn't bother, but i had a look at the results for the past 2 weeks, and my numbers had come up, but on the wed night not sat, i think they got just over the million those 2 weeks, i was so pissed off, but what can you do, i still play, but only get small prizes now and then, you can win with 4, 5 or 6 numbers, plus there are 2 supplimentary numbers you can use to substitute with

It's not that you lost $300 lah. Just that you missed getting that $300 pocket money donated by many punters :P
Try 4D Roll, I-bet. The returns may not be high but the probability of a break-even is defintely higher. btw, 6846 is a good number, always come out in different order. I have been observing it - it was the number I play when I feel like giving donations.
