I just started up a site at etsy.com, and was wondering who else here on mylot uses etsy? What do you sell there, and how did you get started with that hobby? Right now I am using etsy to sell my jewelry. I only have a few things up in my shop, thanks to my laziness and procrastination with taking pictures of the stuff I have made. Anyway, I started up jewelry making as a hobby to pass time and relax when I was stressed from work and school. I made a lot of stuff for family and friends, but my little addiction has grown and is getting a bit expensive, so I decided to start selling stuff. I would like to make some other crafts eventually, but right now my time, as well as space for supplies, is rather limited. My etsy store: www.britachu.etsy.com Feel free to share your link with me and I will favorite you! Also, if you know of any other sites that are good for selling items I would like to hear about it!

I have a shop on there. I got started the same way you did. I made a lot of jewelry and gave it away to friends and family. It is expensive to do that as much as I did. I was like an addict. I still love doing it. I have sold 1 piece on there. I haven't put the best pieces I have made on there because I end up giving them as gifts. I didn't really think I could sell anything I made because it is too common. I have had more success having it out on a table where people can see it and make a impulse purchase. I don't charge a lot because I have just started this and I haven't mastered the harder techniques. What I make is easy to make, but I get compliments on everything I wear out in public. I do it as a hobby and I love it. If I can sell something and make a few extra dollars, that is great, but I don't do it so I can make money. I only enjoy making a piece for the possibility of wearing it or giving it away. I have never made anything soley to sell it. I am not that good yet. I admire the work of other people and plan on going to the "shows" when they come into town. My husband calls me a bead addict. My family flatters me by asking me to make them more. It is the best hobby I have ever picked up. It definitely is good for relieving stress. I like the stuff you made. I haven't made anything with 2 strings yet. I am listed under jewelrybin. I can't cut and paste here since I don't have 500. i think the link is www.jewelrybin.etsy.com I love looking around on that website. There are some really unique things on there.

Thanks. I added you, too. I haven't added anything in a while. I may do that again soon. I will keep looking in on your shop, too. I have a few family members that surf around on etsy.com. I will tell them about you.

Do you find your work does better on Etsy than on ebay? So far I tend to sell through my own shop but unusual items I put on ebay and I usually have an excellent response, but I do hear people talking about Etsy and I'm curious as to whether you sell more there than through the normal channels

I'm also an etsy seller (http://effulgentcrafts.etsy.com). Like you other posters I started crafting as a hobby...but quickly I began to have way more stuff in my little apartment then I could wear or use myself. Even after I gave stuff away, there was surplus. So I started thinking...How can I finance this hobby? While I have done (and still do) craft fairs, I right that they are pretty seasonal, especially since many of my objects are seasonal too. I wasn't crazy about eBay since I found that people were looking for a deal rather than to pay what I think my time and talent are worth.... So along came Etsy. It was a perfect solution for me as I didn't have the time or motivation to design and manage my own site (it's enough of a battle for me to post items with only have to take pictures!). I had my boyfriend help me with some branding stuff, a logo, avatar and business cards, and I was off to te races! I etsy is also a great community, and I have participated in many promo swaps. So far, etsys been pretty good to me, and I would definately reccomend it (The fees are also soooo much lower than eBay fees). I hope you all enjoy it too :-)

Thanks Mango! I added you too! It's been a while since I have had a sale. I need to hustle with promotingmyslef a bit more. I have a plan to add a new item to my store tonight too. People say updating often helps bring more traffic to your store.

I added you to my favorites :) I feel the same way about ebay... Everyone is just trying to find the cheapest thing they can (and I'm guilty of it too). People don't care as much about buying a nice piece of jewelry and actually paying for the time that went into it, not just the materials.

I'm on Etsy with the same username as I use here (scarywhitegirl.etsy.com). I sell crocheted items, cross-stitched items, sewn items, and paper goods (mostly collaged stuff). I've been cross-stitching and sewing since I was very young, and I learned how to crochet so I would have something to do while I watched TV. I started selling on Etsy so that I would have a place to sell my crafts during the "off season," when there aren't a lot of craft fairs in this area. I think I've probably made more money on crafts this year than I normally would have at this point, so I am pleased!

How do you go about finding and getting involved in craft fairs in your area? I would like to do a craft fair or two, just to see how it works out, but I really have no idea to get started. I'm not sure how well any of my stuff would sell, or how much it would cost or anything, so if you could give me any info that would be great -- thanks!

I tried etsy in 05, but didn't have much success - only sold one item - so my interest waned. I made little bead angels.

Hey Penguin....the thing about Etsy, is there is a lot of competition, so you have to drive your own customers to your shop. I made business cards for myself to hand out (these are especially good at craft fairs), and I try to wear something I made almost everytime I go out. If someone compliments it, I hand them my card :-) I give cards to friends and family to hand out for me too. I haven't had any sales since January, but I'm just figuring people are recovering from the holidays. I'm hoping things will pick up soon. Admittiedly I haven't been promoting myself very well lately either. I need to get back on that wagon.
