Your kitchen walls

kitchen gadgets - I like to decorate my kitchen with all sorts of antique gadgets. My favorite is an old soap saver I got at a garage sale for 25cents.

What do you decorate your kitchen walls with? Myself, I display antique kitchen tools/gadgets on that small area of board above the cupboards, my favorite of these gadgets is an old soap saver, a metal basket with slits and holes in it with a long metal handle, you put your soap scraps into the basket and swirl it in your sink or laundry. I bought this from a couple of very elderly sisters 15 years ago at a garage sale for 25cents, they said they used it when they were children, in other homes where that area was a shelf above the cabinets I would display woven baskets and my butter churns, butter bowls and butter molds. I liked having the shelf up there better than the narrow piece of wall.

My daughter did her kitchen with a watermelon theme and when I moved in with her three years ago, I just added to it. I did red valances with a white ruffle at the bottom over the two windows with the skirt part of a crib skirt that I found at a thrift store. It turned out really pretty and very cheerful. Then the wooden and ceramic watermelon decorations placed all over the kitchen. It's a very cheerful theme and since we rent the house, we can't really paint the walls so the bright red and green watermelons really stand out against the white walls. It helps to personalize the kitchen and makes it feel more homey. I love a cheerful kitchen. I like the sound of your kitchen gadgets. I've seen something similar to what it sounds like you have at the local pioneer village museum. I love those old bits of history.

I really like red in the kitchen, it is such a warm and crisp color, I like it paired with white or black. Anyhow I was in the process of switching over the color scheme to red - buying things like dish drainer, towels, potholders, aprons new gadgets etc in red - was planning on doing the curtains and throw rugs. Then my friend tells me that red makes you hungrier, it stimulates the appetite. Oh Great! your daughter's kitchen sounds lovely! watermelons are always fun.

Do you ever use your antique cookware? A lot of the stuff we use in our kitchen is really old, some of our pots and pans are Victorian and I regularly use butter pats that are second world war in date. We have enamel colanders, jugs and bowls that are over 70 years old, and they all get regular use. Saves them gathering dust and they were made to be used. We do have newer things too, but not all that many.

out of the oldies that I hang up, I am known from time to time to take down and use a few of them. A yellow with green stripe wooden handled strainer (like the one in the picture) a red wooden handled apple corer (or at least I think that is what it is and what I have used it for) The soap saver, I like to use this. A few of the potato mashers. I have a taco shell gadget up there which I plan to use tomorrow, but I am not sure that it is especially old. The hand mixers I have not used in a long time. I have used my butter pats, bowls, and churns. I like the dazey churns much better than the crock one, but that could be because the wood on the crocks plunger splinters off :/ . I have sold the dazey churns though before our big move 7 years ago, now I can not find them in a price we can afford in this new state. I do miss them for their functionality.

You have some good ideas. I suggest no tiles at least for the walls. I do not understand why some folks want to tile the walls of their kitchen. It looks more like a bathroom rather than a kitchen to me.

I don't know why people want to tile the whole wall, it would seem a bit clinical! Of course you have to have some of the wall tiled above the work surface as a splash back, otherwise your walls would get ruinded there (plus believe me the kithcen looks odd if you dont' - we're still waiting to put our tiles up!), but not the whole wall!

Your kitchen sounds very nice. I'm afraid I have a very very small kitchen and no walls or space to put "extras". There's barely room for the necessities. My dinning room serves as both dinning and office but is seldom used for dinning and is decorated more as "office" with family pictures on the walls and a few flower arrangements to "pretty it up". My old kitchen was larger and I decorated with ivy and wicker baskets = I loved it.

I also like the combination/effect of ivy amidst wicker baskets.. it lends a country cottage atmosphere and is pleasantly quaint.

I don't have much on my walls, but I do have 3 French posters and a vintage French calendar....I have a tiny theme going on, but it's not overly done.

My kitchen has more of a modern flair. What little bit of wall space there is (without a cabinet) has a print. The print is a close up of the spout of a cappuccino machine with a mug sitting underneath. Up the side of the print in large lettering is the word 'cappuccino.'

Unfortunately I live in a rented apartment and can't do much with the walls. I would love to paint it to add some colour to the place. All i see is cream, cream and more cream on all the walls.

I currently have no kitchen walls, just pillars holding up the roof, so my decorations are nil. However, when I actually get my kitchen built, I plan to make my own clay tiles to hang, as well as put up some paintings.

We don't have much on our walls at all, we live in a town in a terrace house so the country style look would be totally out of place, so ours is more modern and minimal. We mainly just have cabinets on our walls! I'd like a big cork/notice board though on one wall. We do have a callender up but that's all.

unfortunately, I live in an apartment and can't do much of my own. I do have an antique German plate over the stove, I am not sure what it's worth or if anything. My husband got it before we were married and I have always loved it. My sister wanted to take it, her husband #2 is German descent, but I wouldn't let it go. For some strange reason it pulls me in. I usually give anyone anything they want of mine, but that plate and a painting my husband brought home of the Moulin Rouge and surroundings, (my sister also wanted) I won't budge !! Your kitchen sounds very unique and wonderful. I can't wait until I can have a kitchen of my own someday !!

When I first got married we has wallpaper that looked like newspaper. It kinda looked like the old Subway restaurant wallpaper. Anyways, we decorated the walls with paper hats from restaurants. Being in a new home and collecting frogs now, My kitchen walls have pictures of frogs cooking and baking.
