I have a Sons of 5 1/2 years and daughter of 4 years, I havent started yet to send them for swimming lessons. I know it is necessary, but do not know when to give these lessons. Can anyone advice me on when what is the best age. Can I send both my kids to one instructor? Is it a good idea?

The answer really lies with you. Are you comfortable leaving your child with a coach? Do you bring your kids to the pool regularly? Are your children comfortable playing in the water?
I bring my boys swimming when they were about 5 months old. Swimming is so frequent that we are able to teach them water safety. Example, walk at all times, apply suntan regularly, pay attention to the life guards, etc..
My 5 yrs old is now in a swimming class with some of his schoolmates. And enjoying ever lesson while my younger one 3 yrs, swims with me while the bigger boy is having swimming lesson.
You might want to look for a coach that can take both your children. So that your younger child has you with her and does not have separation anxiety and thus refuse to go into the water. *LOL*
Most important of all, let them have fun! Enjoy!!

Here you can start children from birth in certain places - the big ones in the city - out here in the sticks where i live, they can do public swimming lessons but need to be of school age!
You should be able to have your kids in the same class as long as they start their lessins at the same time!
I guess it would be a good idea for security reasons, they might feel safer knowing the other is close by.
Have you thought about maybe teaching them yourself?

Yes your kids can have one instructor at least they have each other as classmates. Go to the nearest swimming pool to inquire about their swim classes. I was a swimming instructor before and had students who are siblings and I find it easier to teach them because they are not shy anymore.

My oldest daughter and my son both started swimming when they each reached the age of 2 months. The YMCA had mother/child classes. Mainly they learned how to flip on to their back and float until help arrives. Survival swimming techniques were taught to the babies to decrease the number of drownings.
My daughter is now 26 years old and my son is 24 years old. They have been swimming all their life and they swim like fish.
My two other daughters were a little bit older when they hit the water. They were about 6 months old and now they are in high school. They can definitely out-swim most of their friends who did not learn until they were older.
Teach your children early for their own survival especially if you live in an area that has a lot of pools, ponds, lakes or other bodies of water around. It is a skill they will always use. (they can even practice floating in the bathtub)

at the local pool here babies start swimming lessons at 6 months with the help of their parents. 4 is the age where they start to learn on their own. i think it's a good age. they understand to take instructions at this age.

I took swimming lessons when I was 5 and did really well. We had our 3 year old practice in a kiddie pool but not acutal lessons. I think 5 or 6 years old is a good age for them to take lessons without a parent. I think younger children should have a parent with them for the lessons.
