politics in the work place...can we move on without it?

i've worked for over a decade now and even before finishing school. and through the years and number of offices and co-workers i've been with, i've encountered politics in various degrees and different faces. and through it all i've learned that sometimes this "thing" can either pull you up or drag you down from your target of succes or focus of good, effective work. sometimes, it's about who you know and NOT what you know about the business that determines where your career can possibly go. especially when you are new at work. and to my mind this undermines the essence of professionalism for every worker who only wants to be effective and successful at her/his job. sad but true.
