Okay I did a little research and this is what I came up.
1. they like the texture of the plastic on their tongue
or, and I think this is the best
2. they like the taste. Many plastic bags are made with fish byproducts (fish oil is used to control the consistency of the plastic and allows it to be blown thinner) Some bags are made with corn starch and some cats like the taste of that as well.
maybe it is a combination of both.

The idea that plastic tastes like fish to my cat made me chuckle quite a lot! I never knew that!
Thanks for all your information. I'm going to have to be a lot more guarded in future to keep Voodoo away from the stuff.

We've had one cat for a few years now that will lick them as well. He doesn't eat them or anything like that but he will sit there and lick them. We have 10 cats and he's the only one that does this. I'd never seen it before either so I have no clue why. I guess something in it he likes the taste of. Maybe someone here will know the answer as to why and we can find out :)

My cat licks plastic bags, the side of the bath tub, the shower curtain, and the window blinds. I know that when she licks the tub she just wants water (although she has perfectly good water in her bowl) but I'm not sure why she
licks the bags or the blinds.

My cats do this too. I am not sure why but it is important to try to make sure they don't. Eventually they will go from licking to eating it and that can cause serious health issues.
My old cat got really sick once and I took her to the vet and they did some X-rays and said that it looked like she had cancer, boy was I sad. They said they needed to do surgery to really see what was going on, so I said okay. They did the surgery and found out that she had eaten part of a plastic bag and it got stuck in her intestines. She ended up losing one kidney, part of the other and part of her liver because of the blockage. She had to go on prescription food and they said she would maybe live for another 6 months.
I was so sad because she was my baby. In the end she showed them and lived for another 5 years, but I had to get the prescirption food for all of those years. So watch those cats and try to keep the plastic away from them.

My cat licks plastic bags, too. I don't know why, but I try to keep the plastic bags away from him. He could accidently swallow a piece of plastic and choke or something.

Nice to know my cat is not the only one with this bizare behavior. I agree with a previous comment about the "coating" of plastic bags and I do know that to be true. However, I would like to add another reasoning to the theory as to why our beloved cats lick plastic. I think it is also the sound the plastic makes that attracts them to lick it. My cat loves to bat at it before she licks it. I've even found her sleeping on plastic bags - apparently she wore herself out from all the licking. :)

I wish I knew the answer to this as my Voodoo won't stop gnawing on them herself. If you find out, please let me know! *lol*

Yes, my cat Mouse I had in college did that all the time. I was told that this means the cat was taken away from its mother too soon, and is trying to lick smooth things that remind it of its mother's teats. My cat definitely was taken away from her mother too soon so maybe that's it. I never did get her to stop, I just had to hide all the plastic bags so she couldn't get near them.
