dude windows vista requires very huge requirements to upgrade when compared to windows xp. like it needs about 1gb of ram and a graphic card, p4 processor with 2.4ghz for running the extreme graphics edition. i think there are some basic editions for those who cant efford such huge configureation l. but the graphics effects are lesser in the beginner edition.

Woow WIndows Vista.. what a hot subject i can say. I have talked a lot in my area with many of my friends and all of them had only positive thoughts about it. I can say that i was blow off by this new windows system. Some things certainly lack to it but this new look which Microsoft has incorporated in it certainly do the money you would give for it. I have waited this new system for 2 weeks and here i am using it. It was pretty hard for me to buy it because in my area it can't be found. So i had to ask a friend from another part of my country to order me. I am so happy using it and all i have are only words of gratitdue. I post here a short description about VISTA.
Windows Vista contains hundreds of new features; some of the most significant include an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker, and completely redesigned networking, audio, print, and display sub-systems. Vista also aims to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network using peer-to-peer technology, making it easier to share files and digital media between computers and devices. For developers, Vista includes version 3.0 of the .NET Framework out of the box. The .Net Framework makes it significantly easier for developers to write high-quality applications than with the traditional Windows API.

if you are using a 32-bit machine, it's best to download the Microsoft Vista Upgrade Advisor from MS to be sure which part of your HW uou need to upgrade

As a matter of fact the question is do u want to have vista or do u want to enjoy vista?
For the former u cud get (min requirement):
1.8GHZ Processor
512MB RAM
32-64 MB VGA Card
20-40 GB HDD
and then u cud sit in front of ur comp all day waiting for apps to open!
OR u cud get a (optimum requirement)
Core 2 Duo Processor
2GB RAM
128-256MB VGA memory ( directX 10 compactible )
80-100 GB SATA HDD
and "EXPERIENCE THE WOW"
hope this helps u out!

If you want to use the os as it was meant to be , you need to have a dual core processor and at least 1gb of ram, if you can spend the extra bucks go for 2gb ram and minimum of 128mb Stand alone graphics card not an on board one.

For the "Home Basic" version, you need at least a 1 GHZ processor, 512 megs of RAM, a 20 gig HD, a DirectX 9 compliant video card with 32 megs of graphics memory, a DVD-Rom, and access to the internet.
Any machine made in the last 3 to 5 years should suffice. Obviously, if you have a 3 GHZ machine with 2 gigs of RAM, you'll enjoy the OS more.
