Few months back me too was searching for ebook download sites ...very frantically..I got lot of sites and registered in many of them. But you know I forgot all of them, as I do not need them any more. And the reason, why i do not need them is a site "ebooks.org"...this is probably one of the best site for downloading ebooks (so far i have seen). All my requirements are fulfilled by this site now (Its not that I am a very avid reader, but I simply cant stop myself from having all the bests books with me).
One hitch with this site is you got to register (which is absolutely free) to get the download links.
You will find ebooks in all kinda topics/subjects and that too in plenty. There is a very good discussion forum plus a ebook request section. Also lot of good audio file, educational CD-Rom download links are pasted.
I strongly recommend you to have winrar software (downloadable from www.winrar.com or www.download.com)installed in your computer (If you do not have it already), as most of the ebooks are compressed in rar format.
Another good link I came across recently is "www.AvaxHome.Ru"...but select 'english ebook section' in left corner of the home page or else you will get confused...hope you will have good experience with these 2 sites.

Try going to torrent sites, They host many different ebooks as well as other files. mininova.org, demonoid.com, etc... You need to download first the application for this- bittorrent or bittornado, etc..

IF you're interested in a wide variety of books try
www.pgdp.net
It's the Distributed Proofreader's site.
Register as a member (and get to do some pretty cool stuff...well, that is, proofread rare books that are public domain)and get to read all of the ones that have been scanned and proofed already.
I liked it a lot and did some proofreading -- which honed my writing skills tremendously.
