most people understood the temperament of chow chows. But they are loyal and sweet. as for my chow, I find her a bit weird because she usually just "bark" at no-so-good-looking-people.
I think dogs can sense that, if a person likes them (FOR REAL and not just because the owner is around) they showed that they like the person too. and if a person doenst like them for real, dogs tend to bark a lot at them :P hehe

well.... i've got 7 dogs and 5 of them are pretty ok with strangers. One of them infact loves people and will always trouble them to pet him whenever he gets the chance. However one is too scared and runs away whenever people come near him and another is very aggressive. She keeps barking and people and till date just 7 people can touch her. She has even nipped people's ankles on occasions.

My dog is very friendly, I like it but sometimes it worries me too. He is fond of going outside our gate and he likes it when other people pick him up and cuddle him. My worry is they might take him away. He barks too, not for anything but to catch attention. He loves it when he gets attention from people around him.

My dogs will bark at people when they come in the house and even our neighbor when she comes out to give them biscuits. We got them when we lived in apartments, and they would bark at other dogs/people, so we would go over and let them introduce themselves. So the dogs ended up learning that if you bark, you get to go meet them. Ugh. Now they go crazy and we can't break them of it.

Hello
Sound like your dog need some training.There are usually dog obedience classes
in most towns.A trained dog makes the owner and the dog much happier.
We have 3 large dogs,2 goldens and 1 black labs.
The 2 golden girls are sweet natured ,will bark to alarm us when we have
company but would never hurt anyone.
Now the black lab male has an agressive tendences so we had him neutered
and if he was not well trained I would be afraid he would bite.We had to
work hard on his training and he behaves nicely but I wouldn't trust him if we
aren't here and someone came in.
Hope that helps

Well, we are trying to calm her down in situations like that, but there is nothing we can do when she starts to plea for attention, for which she is quite eager.
Tnx for advice anyway ;}
Concerning your male lab, I think that it is actually good that he is so protective; no one should be entering your house without your permittion anyway.
